Super Smash Bros. Brawl revealed for Wii, featuring Solid Snake! [update]

Speaking at a special Nintendo developer event, Miyamoto has just unveiled Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii. Newcomers include: Pit (Kid Icarus), Zero Suit Samus, Wario, and ... Snake!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be fully compatible with the GameCube controller. Sakurai's reasoning is simple. He doesn't want to alienate gamers that prefer the traditional gamepad.

The game will feature online multiplayer. Single-player mode will see some changes, but Sakurai has declined to elaborate. Miyamoto did say (via translator) that we can expect "a very robust" single-player mode.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl will not be a launch title. Sakurai has confirmed a 2007 release.

Wario will have a special fart attack.

Kojima begged Sakurai to include Snake in the GameCube version of Smash Bros., but it was too late in the development cycle to add the character. When Brawl became a reality, Sakurai contacted Kojima and the decision was made to introduce Snake into the series. Solid Snake will use explosives ... and a cardboard box.
Snake is the only third party character confirmed for Brawl. Sakurai has confirmed that other third party characters are a definite possiblility. There was talk of Sonic...

OMFG PIT!!!!!!!! AND MET KNIGHT!!!!!
Fun...
Remember though to stay 8-bit
McGee @ May 10th 2006 10:20PM
Blonde in the blue suit is more than likely Samus without her suit. And holy shit....Pit? I hope to god they make a Kid Icarus Wii.
Nobody @ May 10th 2006 10:20PM
That's not a Virtua Fighter character, that's Samus without her suit on. In Metroid: Zero Mission, you get to play as Samus after she loses her powersuit near the end of the game, and she just has that blue jumpsuit on.
Spacedout @ May 10th 2006 10:21PM
I finally get to lay the smack down on puppies!!!!!
It's about freaking time they let us do that!
Solid Snake in Smash Brothers has to be the absolute most suprising thing to come out of E3, talk about left field. Completely awesome :D
rainking187 @ May 10th 2006 10:21PM
joey, did you even bother to look at the above screens? Snake is clearly in the game.
Ken Seang @ May 10th 2006 10:22PM
WTF, is that a Nintendog I see, lol and that girl in blue looks a lot like samus. Man, cant wait to play that game!!!
kyou @ May 10th 2006 10:24PM
Maybe it's because Sony and Microsoft have... crap to show? Uhm... still waiting patiently for Guitar Hero 2 though...

It's not that I don't give a shit about the Wii coverage. It seems like every Engadget/Joystiq blogger is at the Nintendo area. Assign some bloggers to go cover other areas. Go to Kentia Hall or something! Hey genius, if the area at Nintendo is a 190 min. waittime, why don't they go somewhere else and cover something else. All of them don't need to be there together playing with the phallic remote.
Niel @ May 10th 2006 10:26PM
Snake? you've gotta be kidding me throwing in random characters that don't belong to nintendo is going to ruin the atmosphere of the game.
obinna @ May 10th 2006 10:26PM
Oh my god this excites the shit out me even if the are not using the wiimote ( in my opinion is a good idea because it might fuck it up ).
P.S. SNAAAAAAAKE SNAKE SNAKE
WOOOOOOW TO I DIDN'T KNOW THE COULD EXCITE MORE THAN I WAS BEFORE
Duckmurderer @ May 10th 2006 10:27PM
Blah blah XBox 360 blah blah blah PS3. Nintendo kicks their asses in quality games. PC is good though. But PS3 and Xbox are just revamped versions of their predecessors.
Project Revolution (the name "Wii" sucks) actually tries to bring something new to this world, and not just the bland games that we've been playing anyway (Halo 3? Ick!)
Joey @ May 10th 2006 10:27PM
rainking187, thnks for the heads up!...my bad, the stupid dial up of mine just gos too slow....well, now that i see those pics, forget wtf i just mentioned before except for the sonic thing maybe, well now that my F*IN dial up got the pics finnaly finished....il say this will be really kool game. my bad for da mistake ppl! srry

Pince @ May 10th 2006 10:30PM
If you are going to bitch about an overabundance of Wii coverage, doing it on a Smash Brothers post is actually kind of silly. Smash Brothers is universally loved, not just by "Nintendo fanboys".
There are plenty of people who have never played another Nintendo game apart from SSB but they play smash brothers nearly every day. Of all Nintendo franchises, Smash Brothers likely gets some of the most fans outside of the usual Nintendo crowd. For most people I know, Smahs Brothers was the reason they bought a GC and, despite how excited I am about other Wii titles, 1) I'm buying a 360 first and 2)I will likely end up buying a Wii the day SSBB comes out.
I'm not a Nintendo fanboy, but I am sure as hell a Smash Brothers fanboy. So let me and my brethren have our moment in the sun for this year's E3, and spare the complaining.

DUDE. This can only mean one thing:
KIRBY WITH A MULLET.
Scottus0 @ May 10th 2006 10:30PM
well, no Wii controller support is dissapointing, but this looks like it'll be really great (as usual). But the pics look really nice, especially the last one (though I'm not sure if it's FMV or not). Also dissapointing is that its not gonna be at launch... so pretty dissapointing but that doesn't mean it's not gonna be a great game.
smarterray @ May 10th 2006 10:30PM
also capt. olimar and a bunch of pikmin!
Ruemonde @ May 10th 2006 10:32PM
Hell, I don't doubt snake is in it one bit. He first starred in Metal Gear for NES and a few crappy sequels on it too. Not to mention the gameboy Metal Gear... AND the Remake for the Game Cube. Snake has probably been in MORE nintendo systems than PS/PS2.
But really, are we going to have to control it with the remote+nunchuck thing? I'm sure I could get used to it, but i'd rather get some new regular controller with it too... Or even use the old ones.
kyou @ May 10th 2006 10:33PM
I wonder if rats, crocodiles and snakes will be health items now...
Joey @ May 10th 2006 10:34PM
Yea, and maybe starwolf, (from Starfox). forget Slippy, but of course, some of us will need him, if we want a character that we would just love to beat the crap out of! ;) lol oh, the nintendog thing must be some kind of...thing lol thats similar to using a pokeball and out comes Lugia or sumthin
Kirby @ May 10th 2006 10:34PM
This is the greatest news so far. I am glad that they aren't using the Wii-mote for this game though. It's true that it would screw up a lot of people, including me. METAKNIGHT! WOO! :D

The E @ May 10th 2006 10:38PM
Awesome man!
I'm a bit dodgey about Snake, but I don't want to see any Sonic characters in this game. Sonic sucks balls, and I hate him.
LITTLE MAC, WHERE ART THOU!
Of the Eric @ May 10th 2006 10:38PM
Okay, this might just be me, but I see a picture of a nintendog in one of the screens up there hitting the screen in the SSB KO fashion. I sure as HELL hope that that means that a nintendog isn't a playable character! Actually. That would be neat... and who took a pic of samus' ass xD
Freezair @ May 10th 2006 10:38PM
1up_Clock, you made me laugh SO RIDICULOUSLY HARD I almost choked on a piece of pizza.
I'd be willing to fork over 60 bucks JUST to see that.

DCSimian @ May 10th 2006 10:39PM
Don't forget about secret characters! Last game had quite a few. Who's to say we won't see additions this time around?
Oh, since there is scarce Virtual Console coverage, the lads over at 4 Color Rebellion checked it out...I must say it looks rather cool!

nny` @ May 10th 2006 10:39PM
Seeing Solid Snake on the list is a huge dissapointment for me. Super Smash Brothers and SSBM have always been nintendo only characters. Now people will be screaming for sonic, tails, and other characters that arent nintendo onlys.
But so far that is my only thing i find wrong so far with SSBB. It looks to be an amazing game. :)
Sonyhax @ May 10th 2006 10:40PM
Haha, someone is complaining about Microsoft and Sony not getting any attention. That's a laugh. It's about time. Perhaps when they come to the table with something intresting someone will take notice.
...and who was bashing SSMB because it was a RE-MAKE?
Ha! Sony walks on the stage and says Gran Turismo FIVE. Count them, FIVE.
Microsoft comes to the stage and says Halo THREE.
That was basically the end of E3 for them. Now people are getting mad because they aren't getting any coverage. Guess what? THERE'S NOTHING to cover! You want to talk about PSP shipping numbers or something?
They spent so much time in hardware R&D they forgot they were supposed to have games too...not to mention the fact that one of them spent most of their profits just so they could have the best hardware. Better hope someone buys it...I said buys it, it doesn't matter how many they can ship.
kk, SSMB pwnz joo
...shoulda stuck with Walk-Man guys...

chris @ May 10th 2006 10:43PM
Ruemonde: IGN are saying you choose either to play with the remote OR a GameCube controller. The choice is totally up to the player, they aren't forcing either control set-up.
Shigg @ May 10th 2006 10:45PM
HOLY SHIZZNIT! My brother is a huge SSBM fan, as are alot of his friends. They're gonna be mad happy to learn of this.
striderhayasa @ May 10th 2006 10:47PM
How the hell did Nintendo pull of a stunt like this? Solid Snake in SSB?! Wow that's awesome. Good to see snake return to his roots on a Nintendo console even if it is as a guest appearence.
Ty M. @ May 10th 2006 10:48PM
Everyone should remember that the first major console Solid Snake was on was the NES way back in the day. I am proud of Kojima for pushing the idea so hard. Another reason why the Metal Gear franchise might be my favorite.
shiftup72 @ May 10th 2006 10:48PM
ssb is sooo awesome. its the only nintendo game xbox and playstation fanboys cant scoff at! =)
buuuut I would like for miyamoto to keep his hands offa this one. ya know, I like miyamotos work but he will keep the title from getting the really edgey look.
Pince @ May 10th 2006 10:48PM
I'm kind of hoping that isnt the full list of new characters. Lets see...in Melee they added... Zelda/Sheik (which you could really count as two), Ice Climbers, Mewtwo, Game and Watch, Bowser, Peach, Marth/Roy, and then the copies (Ganondorf, Young Link, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Falco - who though very different and very useful, don't really count as completely new characters).
Anyways, that is 7 new characters if you are stingy about it. Right now, Brawl has 5 announced. I am assuming/hoping that there are still some secret characters that they havent announced that can only be unlocked(that would make sense). I mean, we wouldnt want the roster to be too big, but they could cut some of the copies.
Also, as people have shown in their speculations for a long while, there are a TON of characters that people really badly want to see in a Smash Bros. game.
Only 5 new characters would be a little disappointing in that regard. Also, they should keep Ganondorf and maybe a couple other copies but give them new moves lists.

Pince @ May 10th 2006 10:58PM
Oh, and as long as Nintendo is hooking up with Konami on this deal...I mean snake is OK. But there are other Konami characters which are far more reminiscent of Nintendo systems. For example, why not a Belmont? A member of the Belmont clan (anyone from the early games really) would also fit in pretty well with the Nintendo cast.
Doesn't Konami do the Ninja Turtles games? It would be sweet to see a turtle amongst the cast, and they would also fit in well.
I dunno, Snake, as the only one to appear in a game based on humans in mildly realistic military-drama style settings, seems very out of place here.
I mutant turtle or a fantasy vampire-slayer hero would fit in better with the cast...and would do cool sh*t...not that cardboard boxes arent cool.
