Wii impressions: Excite Truck

Excite Truck was getting a lot of talk as we walked through the Nintendo booth this morning. In the demo you can only select one of two courses. I chose Mexico at the recommendation of the booth attendee. As you may know, the controller is held sideways for this one, vying to mimic a steering wheel style control. The most notable features of the game include a decent sense of speed, massive jumps, and the ability to control a solid landing by either pulling up or pushing down the Wii controller. Though I never got the steering down during the short demo, the game does a nice job at bringing back the traditional fun of Excite Bike in a 3D, motion sensing world.

I think this game would lend to a multiplayer party better... 4 people sitting on a sofa could have a blast with this.
Blake, did you feel like there was lag? Or was it tight, but just different (and could get used to with time)?

Shortest impressions ever.

maybe you were having trouble steering because your "monster mudders" are either packed with mud or are almost bald?

I've only seen the short bits of gameplay from the press conf. yesterday but the game looked crappy and not too much fun either. Does the game look decent? Did you enjoy the little bit of time you got with the demo?

I'll just pick up the original Excite Bike (one of my favorites) on the virtual console ;-)

Hey Brian did you even read the impression:
"the game does a nice job at bringing back the traditional fun of Excite Bike in a 3D, motion sensing world."

Big damn truck.

Yeah I read that, I was hoping for a little more elaboration. Was it actually fun on its own or did it just remind him of the fun he had 22 years ago? It's probably the only Nintendo first-party games announced yesterday that didn't excite me in the least. Pardon the pun.
Avinash_Tyagi @ May 10th 2006 5:32PM
Well IGN and Gamespot both also said the game seemed like a lot of fun and a little faced paced and hectic.

"1. I think this game would lend to a multiplayer party better... 4 people sitting on a sofa could have a blast with this."
Isnt that what the whole console is all about ?
Would you really stand in front of your TV alone waving arms all evening?
Would you play singstar alone in your room?
This isnt a single player console in my opinion. The games probably are fun at a party but just dont fit in a sigle player session.
Avinash_Tyagi @ May 10th 2006 5:39PM
Doubtful as games like Metroid Prime, Zelda, etc. are more single player affairs.
Excite truck, like Mario kart however is the type of game meant for party/online play more than single player
Seems like the first party games are more polished at this point than the third party stuff.
jaemz @ May 10th 2006 6:35PM
Dreizehnernuss, I was mostly comparing it to the tennis game... as it looks like it needs a whole stage for 4 people to play. I think multiplayer over the network could be fun with friends as well.

Ooh, someone mentioned Mario Kart above. This would give a lot of headway as to just how a Mario Kart Wii would play in similar aspects. Powerslides with that controller would probably be a lot of fun.
The face buttons playing the role of accelerator and brake, meanwhile, the trigger button underneat would be optimal for the fire button of your weapons. It would be very interesting to say the least.
I think a lot of Excite Truck's main appeal will be the fact that the game looks crisp and clean, and is EXTREMELY fast while doing so. I think its a one-two punch that garnered the Burnout series a lot of love from its fans, so it should be most welcomed by a lot of the gamers that enjoyed that series.
