Wii impressions: Super Mario Galaxy

Though players have long become accustomed to controlling Nintendo's iconic and portly plumber, Super Mario Galaxy marks somewhat of a departure from that tradition. You still control Mario's movements with the analogue stick on the left nunchuck, but the wiimote in your right hand actually allows you to exert an influence on the world itself. A little on-screen star indicates where the wiimote is pointing and by holding down the B-button, you can grab onto various items and structures. For instance, if you run the cursor through a patch of flowers, it willl gently rustle in reaction to the presence of your invisible hand. While you have Mario running and jumping about and doing his usual platforming, you can manipulate objects in the environment in order to help him out.
The game world seems to be comprised of a bunch of little planets floating in space, with Mario seeking out different ways to travel between them. One method of transportation is what appears to be a giant elastic plant. Mario climbs to the top and, using your wiimote, you grab onto the plant, stretch it into one direction and then release the button to have Mario slingshot to a different panet. It's an extremely intuitive experience and really creates the impression that you are reaching into Mario's little universe and making things a little easier for him. You can also stun and tip over the meandering Goombas by running your cursor across them, allowing Mario to finish them off with a good 'ole butt-stomp.
Mario's usual repertoire of moves remains intact, with a vigorous shake of the wiimote activating a furious spinning attack. It's effective for clobbering enemies and activating the various star lifts scattered across the levels. The levels themselves look excellent from a graphical standpoint, boasting some stylish lighting effects and crisp and colorful textures. As far as depictions of plumbers in outer space go, I'd say this is probably the best one I've seen. Super Mario Galaxy really does make up for a lot of the graphical shortcomings of other Wii games. In fact, its unusual and engaging control system provides one of the best glimpses of the system's potential we've seen so far.

A true sequel at last. Sounds extremely promising.
Avinash_Tyagi @ May 10th 2006 6:06PM
Sweet Mario delivers, the first party games rock.
Marc @ May 10th 2006 6:07PM
Whoa, those graphics are better than what i thought they would be. And that new control scheme for Mario sounds interesting.
Get@Me @ May 10th 2006 6:10PM
That Last statement is very reassuring. I was very underwhelmed by their press conference.
RageOverdose @ May 10th 2006 6:13PM
I knew Nintendo was going to show off some nice graphics.:)
Still, I was more interested in the gameplay aspect, and worried too, but now, its basically desire to test it.
The planets though, they seem rather small. Are levels broken into systems of these planets, or is it something else? Are we still collecting stars/shines/random-shiny-things-with-eyes?
Must...play...

Graphics Schmaphics, as long as the gameplay rocks thats all I need to hear, now all I want is for it to be a launch title (Mario Link and Samus at launch FTW).
Spike @ May 10th 2006 6:18PM
The video i saw was stunning to say the least.
200$ +Mario Galaxy +Zelda at launch = Wii will own!!!
saviorofhyrule @ May 10th 2006 6:29PM
Different "PLANET" not Panet.
Princess Zelda @ May 10th 2006 6:33PM
Wow that footage of Mario is stunning. The gameplay reminds me of playing Mario 64 for the first time and learning how to use the controller.
Amos @ May 10th 2006 6:35PM
Sounds good, other than the fact that, you know, Mario 3d platformers have yet to impress me. At least, in the long run...they get so damn boring.
daver @ May 10th 2006 7:01PM
The french movie does alot more justice to the game than nintendo's own 'snippets'. This game is truly stunning and looks like it has that old simple magic thats been missing since sm64. This is a system seller as they well know so it wont launch alongside Zelda. Maybe Dec 1st ? This above all else has got me really excited. And also Pilotwings, which so far has not again been shown properly.
The machine should be out September - Oct because Nintendo does NOT have the balls to compete directly with Sony. And it will sell for 249USD.

Funny how just a month ago I was a PS3 fanboy.
I'm lovin Wii by the second. Sure, SMG isn't top-notch graphics, but it's definitely up there and kills all competition with what seems like incredibly fun gameplay.
If this thing is $200 at launch, I'm definitely going for this. Hell, I'd still get it if it was $400 (though I highly doubt this would be the case).

That youtube video makes the mario control scheme look like a gimmick, having to shake the controller just to get him to spin is gonna get really tedious and achieves nothing that a controller button couldnt do already.
Dont get me wrong I like the idea of the new controller for sports games and a few other genres where it improves on a controller, but surely if was any good for mario they would have actually allowed you to move him with the sensors- not just some stupid black & white esque hand that they seem to have invented to give the controller some justification to exist.
Zell @ May 10th 2006 7:39PM
Indeed, it looks like a lot of fun. I'm definitely excited about the Wii's release.
Spoon @ May 10th 2006 7:41PM
Were the "leaked" Mario pics that came out a while back any close to this? I don't really remember them besides the weird glow Mario had, but I guess the glow was right?
Does anyone have the pics?
Jacob @ May 10th 2006 7:51PM
The problem I see with SMG is that the cutesyness is approaching "Care Bears" levels...
Magenta steam @ May 10th 2006 8:36PM
I have them Pics and they are fake fors sure (I know I use Photoshop).
This game looks really good even the graphics are better than I expected. Anyone who wants to know more about this game like I did after first seeng it, here is a link to IGN's page (yes I know IGN are totally biased and like every other form of media just want to earn moneys).
off topic I hope red steel has better grahics than shown earlier, cause from what I've seen they are only a bit better than Xbox.
zenprism @ May 10th 2006 10:50PM
I'm more than looking forward to another Mario game, but the space theme disturbs me. I want my Mushroom Kingdom back (or did I just miss images of anything outside of the space area?)
Sienster @ May 12th 2006 2:35PM
Seeing the video makes me second guess my decision to buy Xbox 360. I have a wife these days, and she's not going to go along with having another system. Damnit, I should have waited til all the dust settled.
SMG looks like it will be lots of fun to play. I remember when SMW came out for the 64, it was a little akward to learn the controller at first. Now look - that type of controller is commonplace.
fennmeister @ May 13th 2006 12:22PM
Ninted has some pretty freakin' smart people. That's what they do, sit back, and observe the competition, while the brains in the back, think of some new $#!+. These guys(or girls) are smart. Gamecube and N64 were just experiments to set up this revolutionary system. Ready or Not, Here WII come :-).

@ #9,
I feel the urge to correct peoples' spelling just like you, saviorofhyrule, but on forums no one like a grammar nazi, just resist.
But getting back on topic, the game looks fun. I personally loved Sunshine, and thought FLUDD was actually a nice addition (although I never played Mario 64, so I can't make that comparison), but I can see why some people would like Galaxy more. It adds new content but stays closer to the simple mario style. I'm still most excited about Zelda and Red Steel, though. Wii will definitely own with those at launch. Can't wait till quarter 4!
V @ May 14th 2006 1:42AM
@ #20, you're right about the controller being commonplace, but a 3-handled controller for 2-handed humans was still an absolutely TERRIBLE decision. But still, every other company has done something similar, with the old Xbox controller for octopuses and giants, the PS3 Bananna-Batarang, and the rehashed PS3 controller.
