While Joystiq does not support using "gay" in a derogatory sense, we wanted to post this cuz it's funny.

actions speak louder than words, bitches.

good job.

What speaks louder than words is the fact that people are printing up shirts because they despise the name so much.

I'd be curious what sort of reaction this dude got from the crowd.

As soon as the doors opened at E3 on Wednesday I headed straight to the Nintendo booth. In front of me in line were five guys wearing this same shirt in a variety of colors, including pink! They were getting alot of attention from the public and and were really enjoying it . I got the joke, but what I didn't get is why these guys would wear such a shirt degrading Nintendo when this is the first place they ran to when the convention opened? These guys just wanted attention, and they got it!

Erm.. #4 - I believe they're most likely posting it, as its a new items? It's something thats happened at the E3 event, and shows someones reaction.

I completely disagree with the guys view, and hate when "gay" is used a derogatory term, but dont have a go because its reported. I disagree with murder, but thats still shown in the news.

It's telling that more people are annoyed about Nintendo being maligned than the negative usage of the word "gay."
Call me gay but don't you EVER make fun of my Wii.

It's just a name, not a good one in my opinion, but they could call it blap or fenk for all I care.
This Wii, us, we or whatever symbolism and accompanying explanation is just marketing babble, ignore it if you don't like the sound of Wii, embrace it if you do.

"Want to come over and play with my Xbox360?"=OK
"Want to come over and play with my Wii?"=NOT OK

It's as simple as that; they made a bad cultural decision. Yet again, they dropped the ball, because a name like that simply WILL NOT WORK in this hemisphere.

I'm going to own a Revolution regardless of what it ends up being called. However, I will always refer to it as the revolution and maybe that will influence others to call it by its rightful name also. If everyone referred to it as the revolution then it simply would be the revolution. A rose by any other name...

If consumers can help bring back cancelled tv shows, why not cancelled names?

How long will it be before some company sells a "skin" that will cover up the new logo with the proper Revolution logo?

Fight the power! Huzzah!

You people basing your console decision on a name are hilarious. If you are so much lacking in the "self-esteem" department that saying a silly name lowers your masculinity, then you have bigger issues than just being upset with the name of a video game console. Grow up, shut up, have fun.

Wait until itīs launched so you donīt have to swallow your own words when you buy one, or prove that you were right if nobody buy it.

good or bad, the name is not going to be the main point to buy the system.

I will buy it but I hate the name so instead of calling it Wii I will call with the name of my favorite movie, Shrek 2.

"Hey you wanna go play with my Shrek 2?"
"???"
"The one I bought last week..."
"Ohhh, you mean the Wii?"
"NO, I bought and renamed it to Shrek 2"
"suits me just fine, letīs go play Mario in your Shrek 2..."

Accept the name and stop crying kids (or call it Titanic or Scarface ).

Is that Tom Cruise in the top left? lmao

Nintendo is doomed now, it is compared to him. ;)

Sure wii is just a name (a very bad name that surely came from the Asian boardroom and didn't have any American common sense for input), sure it is funny and the jokes are everywhere. Maybe people will forget about it, but maybe not.

One fact stands, there seems to be an unprecidented amount of backlash.

I have a great sense of humor, and no, it's not funny. Substtitute "gay" for "is for n-word." Still funny? No? So why is it funny the first time around?

I support this guy's right to freedom of speech. He can say whatever he wants and offend whoever he wants. But he's still an unfunny dick.

gg Samuel. You are a beacon of tolerance and I'm sure the Klan appreciates your efforts. It's not moral superiority, it's called acceptance of a person. Using gay as a derogatory term is no more acceptable than using racial slurs, though you probably don't have a problem with that either.

Why am I not surprised that someone with the name "p-diddy" would go and turn this into a racial issue? Grow up, or go form a march with the other idiots in this world that can turn "Good morning" into "You said the n-word..I'm suing!"

"I support this guy's freedom of speech."
Your words would certainly say otherwise. You can't say you support something and then condemn it in the very next sentences. Well, unless of course, you're a hypocrite....

For the record, I found the shirt to be pretty darn funny. And you're the perfect example of how people take things too seriously these days. Jeez, it's a shirt..laugh or stfu but don't stand there griping and screaming racist like a total idiot.

hes using pics of gay people, and saying the console is gay. whats wrong with that? hes saying the console is camp/bent/a man lover/homosexual. thats what gay means doesnt it? so what hes personified the console

unless your interpriting the consoles name being gay, which it does not say "the name wii is gay"

and the guy that brought racism into it, why? no one else cared about race but you brought race in. so that means that you sir, are racist? right? why else would you mention it?

P-fizzle, if I swapped the "n-word" in for gay it wouldn't make grammatical sense. Don't spit that crooked ass jive in my face brudda, I'm surious. Air buddy in the club gettin tipsy.

Get the fuck over yourself man. There wasn't a picture of Mathew Shephard on the shirt(unless its the guy in the middle), it was a collection of hilarious pop-culture references. You do have a point though. The fact that guy put gay on his shirt is really gonna effect the level of tolerance in the world. It was REALLY REALLY REALLY important, I'm super duper serial. You suck. And no, I'm not immature, I'm a fully grown douche bag, there's a big difference.

"While Joystiq does not support using 'gay' in a derogatory sense"

Well you guys are gay then for taking yourselves so seriously. Everyone uses derogatory terms, even people that claim not to. Liberals for example shun people that use the word gay but have no problem throwing around "fundy," "fat-cat," "red-stater" or "hick" when describing groups of people that they enjoy degrading and stereotyping.

First re: grammatically correct: His shirt says "wii think the wii is gay." I said subsitute "gay" for "is for n-word," thereby making the shirt "wii think wii is for n-word." That makes grammatical sense (though I didn't pluralize n-word. my bad *rolling eyes*).

Now, everyone is complaining that I brought race into it. I didn't, but you are all proving my point. Making derogatory comments about someone's race is verbotten to everyone here apparently, but using the word gay in a derogatory sense is ok and I shouldn't take things so seriously. And I'm the hypocrite? riiiiiiight.

As for freedom of speech, I said I support it and I do. He can put whatever he wants on the shirt. And I'll continue to say he's an unfunny dick. It's both our right. If you want to use gay as a derogatory term, be my guest. But I'll still say you're an uneducated dick for doing it. Welcome to America.

And I saw anchorman. Worst Will Ferrell movie to-date. And I guess since all the gay people that Brian knows do it, it's ok. I should take my cues for the n-word from Dre and Kayne, right?

And for the record, I'm "white" and don't like hip-hop.

The shirt doesn't say "Wii think Wii is for gays" but says that Wii "is gay". As in silly, dumb, etc. Derogatory, uh yea but its still amusing.

You try to make your point by suggesting "Wii think Wii is for kneegroes" and saying its the same thing. Uh no. Contextually it isn't.

It doesn't matter that many people use that word and it is quasi-acceptable as opposed to the n-word....nor does it matter that even gay people use the word "gay" themselves. What matters is that you are humorless and too easily offended by people who clearly are not doing you any harm.

Everyone please learn to pick your battles.....What kind of crap life would you lead if you let every goober out there irritate you?

Don't let me irritate you p-diddy who doesn't like hip-hop, I'm not attacking you....don't even read this post p-diddy. But if you don't, ur gay.

"Joystiq does not support using "gay" in a derogatory sense."

I'm kind of puzzled by this. The use of the word "gay" in a derogatory sense is merely a linguistic mutation (as, I should note, is the use of the word "gay" to connote homosexuality-the word originally meant happy or carefree-yet no one seems to be offended by its use as such). This is how language evolves.
We should treat language more like a modern fighting game: One word/punch? Not impressive; nothing to give attention or merit to. A verbose insult or poem/14-hit combo? THERE is the real challenge. That requires thought and skill. One-word slurs and the so-called "dirty words" are powerful only to those mentally feeble enough to be offended by them.

This thread is gay.

Don Jose hit it on the head. The word gay has evolved into a generic term meaning something's lame. The fact that the guy tied two uses of the word together (via pictures of publically gay celebrities) is actually funny.

what i havent seen anyone remark about yet, is that this is a brilliant strategy on nintendo's behalf. keep making these jokes all you like, and keep fueling the fire by talking about it to other people - what most people don't realize though is that adage that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

this name, and nintendo's product, is getting ingrained in our minds, one joke at a time. this has been the best marketing strategy i've seen by a gaming company in a LONG time.

HAHAHAHA, OMG this is one of the funniest thing i have seen all day, people needs to be more open minded and have a sense of humor. I mean, really black people use the n word and it's okay, but when a white man comes in and use it, the world is at an end. As far as i know, gays don't mind being called gay and they proudly admit it too, scary but people need to keep an open mind. Have a sense of humor, it helps.

Well... Nintendo's aiming for fun for everyone... but I was under the impression that "fun" means saying "whee~~~~" and not "wii~~~~". Meh, whatever works. I'm just disappointed that those people wore those shirts to E3. It sets a bad precedent as to why E3 is limited to the press only and to the lucky few people who can get their hands on an E3 pass.
