Yesterday, we asked a few people on the show to give their reaction to the following question: "which of the big 3 press conferences (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) impressed you the most?" Here are some reactions we got:Ben Sawyer: Digital Mill / Games for Health
"Sounds like Nintendo won. Microsoft shows incremental improvements and Sony had ... a messy conference"
Libe Goad: AOLMicrosoft won. They were actually showing some games. And games that i want to play! I'm really fascinated by Live Everywhere ... They're really leveraging the Microsoft monolith to put games everywhere.
Brandee: PMS Clan
"Well I didn't see any of the press conferences, so I'll be more general. When you let someone else go last you give them the edge. Nintendo was last to unveil the really big details. Microsoft and Sony have announced their prices, and now they've left it open for Nintendo to price their console at a really reasonable price."
Carinda: Gameinatrix.com
"Just on reputation alone, Nintendo. I haven't paid too much attention to the conferences but everyone's talking Nintendo."
Ryan (college student)
"Initially Sony, but i think the balance has shifted to Microsoft. They're doing some cool stuff."

Libe Goad is stupid. I mean "Microsoft actually showed games", right so I suppose that lengthy 5-10 minute trailer from Nintendo showing Wii games was all an illusion. And the Red Steel and Zelda bits? Course they didn't exist. damn hypnotism.

It was all very predictable.
I think we will have to wait until E3 07 to know which system has the upper hand.
I also think Sony and Nintendo are going to have a field day at TGS 06.
I was somewhat surprised at the number of playable games they both had available. I don't think Microsoft had that many playable 360 games at E3 05.
While Sony is getting ripped for various (valid) reasons, their playable games were quite impressive and some of the most polished games I have ever seen. 6 months before their launch date, this bodes great things for their launch window.

I hope no one ever forgets Sony's massive lack of any suave or graceful business techniques. Instead of planning and coming to E3 with something original and exciting to present to the consumers, they deliberately added motion sensors to their controller as a cheap "we have it too!" gimmick.
Nintendo showed in-game stuff, no (or very little) CG. That atleast allows me to respect Nintendo as a company. They have the balls to show their product to the masses.
Microsoft had a lot of CG, but the Halo 3 trailer was in-game, and the God of War demo rocked. Microsoft is doing better than expected, especially since their console, the 360, isn't an upcoming one. They managed to keep things exciting, up until Bill Gates rambled on forever about the concept (or whatever it was, I got bored of it).
So I'd say Nintendo > Microsoft > > > > > Sony.

The best point taken from this post is this: We are all so busy examening every fact, detail, tidbit, grain or even hint that you can easily forget what is happening out there. You know. The real world. Where millions upon millions will know the new Nintendo as Wii and will have never heard of a revolution. Whole countries will buy into the Dual Shake/Tilt story of Sony simply because they never heard of what Nintendo has to offer. And don't forget the people who will hail HALO 3 as the most original mind blowing game ever conceived simply because they have a 360 already and the rest doesn't matter to them. We are all a small albeit very noisy group who like to know stuff when it happens. And the 4 ppl chosen above aren't in that group. Because so is the rest of the world.

I really look forward to TGS 2006 this year. We will see more polish from Sony and Nintendo, showing systems that I have no doubt will have evolved from this years E3. And Microsoft in Japan, well??.

Nintendo - hands down

If the 3 companies were high school kids it would play out like this:
Nintendo: Cool party kid that will do anything for fun
Microsoft: Crazy Jock that feels more violence + guns = more fun.
Sony: Big Poser who's always saying "Me too".
You can flame me till I die, but I am just expressing how I feel.

talked about in non-gaming circles? right. Which is why even my non-gaming parents have told friends and the rest of the family about the Wii. Those mini sports games got them. I suspect they got a huge number more too.
Nintendo were right. They have the none gamers interested. The press were told to go to Nintendo, at least MEN, Guardian and BBC reporters.
Looking outside the internet though, I was reading bits about the Nintendo Wii in Computer Active! The Guardian and Live. It's ridiculous how much attention it's getting in the media. Sony seems to be getting nothing, all you hear in publications is blu-ray.
I feel like buying a 360 now. Microsoft delievered. oh and whats with the wanker "it's cool to hate Sony". seriously mate, grow up. Sony had 2 runs at good systems, then the PS3 just became lackluster. It's not cool to hate Sony, it's not anything to hate Sony. Sony just lost something with the PSP. They forgot what their goal is, seemingly.

That's just another problem with Sony in this industry. The higher-ups on the front line treat gaming as a business venture, not an entertainment venture. They care nothing about gaming, but rather just waving their proprietary Sony pom-poms in your face.

Remember how Nintendo got hell of a smacking from everyone for lacking info on next gen console? Everyone had bashed Nintendo saying, Nintendo has no future. Nintendo is going bankrupt. Nintendo is seeing its last few moments. Nintendo this and that.
Miyamoto was hard pushed about how Nintendo was falling behind, and how Sony was amazing with all the graphics. Miyamoto then insisted Sony was putting on a show for attention seeking.
Do you remember all that?
Fast foward to this E3. I think everything is breaking even. It's not that Sony/MS/Nintendo are better than the others, but to be fair Nintendo has been the only honest player all along. They have been vindicated in this year's E3.
It's tragic for Sony/MS when you think about E3 2005 and E3 2006.
No doubt 360 and PS3 have their goodies. Absolutely no doubt about that. But they did a lot of bluffing which left Nintendo the only good guy in E3 2005. We are beginning to realize that in this E3.

I wonder what made him like sony the best: The Wii-volutionary controller, the Live like online scheme, or their entirely new PS3 controller design?
(good thing you didn't dirty a college by attaching their name)

But, 'winning' the E3 press conference doesn't ensure a win in the real console wars, neither does 'losing'. Sony will still be strong despite it's price, Microsoft has a LOT to do to even attempt to match that, and Nintendo is off blazing it's own new trail. This fall will be so exciting! There is literally something for everyone on all three consoles! Thank God for competition!

The press conference might have shown a lot of things that may not have been a surprise like the "Wii-remote" functionality but it solidified Microsoft's position in challenging the big name Japanese video game console manufacturers. If anything Microsoft summed up it's honest commitment to the betterment of games, constant evolution, connectivity, and the HD experience.
Nintendo also had a good showing with the Wii and the DS. But I don't think it had the impact on me like the Microsoft Press Conference.
The Sony Press Conference was horrible. Watching them throw together the conference with CG clip after CG clip just annoyed the hell out of me. But I watched it til the end. And when they announced the price I just shook my head in pity and called my friends only to hear,"I'm not paying half a grand just to play a game". Oh the "surprise" unveiling of the Dual Shake controller just left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. What happened to the Sony innovation of old. I mean for god sakes we've seen that controller for nearly the past 10 years.

Hardware:
Good/bad
+no more boomerang!
+gyroscopic motion is a neat idea?
-?too bad M$ had it 7 years ago and Nintendo has since advanced the tech for the Wii?ouch!
-pricepoint not only goes against everything sony execs have preached was wrong with 360?s sku concept, but they up the ante with SEVERE downgrades in the ?tard pack??read below?
-no hdmi on $500 ps3=no BR movie playback in HD on $500 ps3?consumers, however, STILL are paying to have the useless drive in their console. Eek!
-$500-$600 is TOO DAMN MUCH for most gamers and when you take into account the Wii will be cheap and how M$ are planning on dropping prices quite a bit before long?sony is in a heap of trouble convincing gamers, especially casuals, to pick a ps3 up.
-controller=no rumble features of any kind at all?BOOO!!!!!
-still skeptical of the system not having heating or other issues due to its rather constrained shell, but we?ll see.
Online:
More talk, no walk?go figure?
Software:
+FF13 looks GREAT!
+as does MGS4?but we NEED to see gameplay since sony claimed it?d be at the show?
+heavenly sword looks pretty neat
-warhawk has lost all its hype and coolness
-ZERO games look anywhere near KZ?s target vid from last year
-ZERO surprise game announcements?they even left out gta4 just so M$ could talk about it at their conference!
-nothing unexpected in general at all
Other:
-sony?s continuing arrogant attitude at trade shows is getting on EVERYONE?s nerves. The only game looking remotely close to KZ?s grfx form last year?s cgi fest is ironically?gears of war!
-if yer gonna blab about how great you are, then you better prove it with gameplay footage?there are no ps3 games showing any gameplay visuals that surpass 360?and that?s not mentioning how gears looks noticeably better than any game on ps3 in-game so far.
-no enthusiasm at all at the conference fomr the presenters or the crowd?begging for applause doesn?t count!
M$:
Hardware:
+hd-dvd add on is neat
+camera and other peripherals are pretty cool too
+wireless racing wheel!
+more REALLY neat sounding features to XBL and the XBLM
+the sales update is EXTREMELY impressive and it now looks as if sony will have a LOT of catching up to do!
-no price for hd-dvd drive yet
-no bigger hdd announcement or any price drop info
-wanted a hint about BC update
Online:
+live anywhere will own as will the new types of content coming to the XBLM
+demos online from e3=SWEETNESS
+same with HD trailers!
+xbl is free this week?WOOT!
-had hoped it?d be free all year around tho to combat sony?s free network
Software:
+++one word?DAAAAMMMMMNNNNN!!!!!! (?in a good way tho)
+ok, gta4 was a shocker with tis exclusive dlc, as was halo 3 teaser trailer being so epic, so kudos for surprises?and forza and fable were semi surprises too!
+they showed a few new titles that looked neat (shadowrun)
+They showed 7 mins of pure gameplay of GOW and it owned everything and seems to be extremely fun to boot according to the hands on reports thus far
They showed many games we knew about already and they continue to impress (mass effect, too human, GOW, SC:DA)
+halo 3 teaser was just epic and amazingly well scripted?also nice to know tis all using purely in-game assets in real time with some game engines running behind it even if not in use
+looking like splinter cell:da wont be on ps3 after all
+official confirmation finally of UT2K7 on 360
+A few notable games like FEAR coming to 360 is never a bad thing
-had hoped for a few rumored announcements to come true?a la shenmue 3, kotor 3, jade empire 2, and FF13/DQ to 360?but of these that didn?t happen, a few are likely for x06 and there is still slight chance M$ can convince SE to give us FF/DQ by the tiem TGS rolls around?crosses fingers!
-not many Japanese style games that could pull their weight shown?waits for lost odyssey to be shown someday?
-cant blame them for using cg for forza and fable after last year?but I still wanted to see real-time stuff for fable REALLY bad.
Other:
+well, they showed cool new hardware, some cool new games, had a couple of big game announcements, and showed games we knew about already that look AMAZING (cough*GOW*cough)?plus a few surprises like gta4/halo 3, xbl arcade goodness.
+putting everything on XBLM is GENIUS by definition and totally gets the gamers to feel like we are interacting with the show, especially with a few show floor demos being released like test drive and lost planet. BRILLIANT!
+very well conducted conference with lots of energy
-no j allard ?
As for Wii?
Well, they had the gift of secrecy for the event?we already knew the grfx would suck pretty badly?and they do. Their base concept for gaming is kinda gimmicky, but at the same time it opens up a lot more room for plain fun gaming. The system wont appeal to the masses, but I can see a LOT of ppl who want to experience both hardcore gaming via 360 and light-hearted gaming via Wii to pass over ps3 and get this combo instead?for the same price at that!
For their conference, they showed fugly games that looked really fun despite this. SUPER props to having 27 games on the show floor for playing tho! The only thing ppl need to remember is that the VAST amount of nintendo?s e3 buzz so far is completely attributed to it being new unlike the 360/ps3. the question isnt if it looks neat now, but rather if that interest will hold out after it launches.

Of course, saying something like this is bound to open up charges of being a fanboy, which is probably inescapable in this context I were to couch my claim in weasel words. At the moment though, I think the only thing worse than the fanboys around here are the people who think naming fanboys gives them creditability points. Everyone is a fanboy. No one is a fanboy.
