OK, lets pretend for a second that there were actually 3 girls for every 20 (which is a number I don't believe for a second). That's 15%. That's nothing to a publisher. And actually getting almost the entire other 85% of attendees to at least stop for 5 seconds longer than they would otherwise probably makes well up for having a few girls turn their head in disgust at such advertising techniques.


Also, lets say you were a publisher for a minute and lets switch the cards. Would you really go out and try to advertise to the 15% of guys which might result in you loosing a grip of the other 85%? I doubt it.


Com'on, this is so dead. Guys play games in bigger numbers and until that changes, advertising will reflect that.

Com'on, this is so dead. Your hardcore market is losing relevance. You won't recognize E3 five years from now; you may not recognize it two years from now. The gaming landscape is changing, if it hasn't already - only the marketing laggards, who make the publicity decisions and drive the direction of advertising, are still trailing. If the Wii proves to be half as successful in drawing women gamers as a DS/Nintendogs bundle, the hardcore market is going to be an even smaller niche than it already is.

PS: E3 is a trade show. The fact that 15% of the people who work at the level of the industry that E3 is geared to are women is significant itself; it also happens to not be representative of the percentage of women gamers. How many 13-year-olds were at E3? How many are gamers? I'll bet it's even more disparate.

Wasn't that entire Paris Hilton thing geared towards girls. . . and what about all of those Olsen Twin and Disney games they were pumping out for so long? Feh to all of this. No one forces those girls to squeeze into tight little hotpants and shake their collectively well-tanned fannies...

15% of a several billion dollar industry is nothing to ignore. Although I can't help but find it ironic that the only reason I clicked on the article is for the hope that there would be some nice icandy. And that there was some.

You could argue the opposite and say that until game advertising appeals to women, then women won't start playing games.

I don't think 15% is a high enough statistic though. It's been estimated that around 45% of people playing games are women. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/sci_nat/05/state_of_play/html/1.stm

While this survey only covers the UK I've seen similar statistics for the US.

Good post Elle. I always wonder what's going to happen to the guys that want women to "shut up and get with the program" once game companies realize there's more money to be made elsewhere.

As more companies realize there is lots of money to be made in the casual gaming market, I wonder how many businesses will still be interested in investing millions of dollars in a big budget hit-or-miss game. I wonder what these guys will say when the local video store is full of puzzle games and no games with "hot chicks" on the box. Think they'll be happy with a "that's just the way the market is" response?

I think I'll just throw in here....

I'm a red blooded, male gamer. Got me a Y chromasome and everything. That said, I, personally, am not impressed by 'booth babes', nor the culture that surrounds it. And I don't think I'm alone on this.

Frankly, I feel like booth babes insult MY intelligence. As if, I, as a 18-15 year old male, am not capable of determining what is or is not a quality product based on it's merits, and must be seduced by busty women, who know little to nothing about the product they are advertising.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I am in the minority on this one, and the rest of the male gaming population is screaming "WOOOOT! BOOTH BAB3Z R TEH ROXOR!". But I don't think so. If, as Ms. Lees implied, more attendees were swayed by swag then booth babes, perhaps their era is coming to an end.

And then, maybe, just maybe, the whole marketing industry can grow the hell up, and gamers can graduate from the public perception of horny, violent, sociopathic teenagers, to merely violent, sociopathic ADULTS.

Oh, and on the subject of who plays games more? Women. At the moment, though, it's mostly solitare and minesweeper, or something on Yahoo! games or on a cell phone.

Seriously. My fiance, mother, and all my female friends play this stuff so much it weirds ME out. And I own a Powerglove.

Woah, woah, WOAH. Hold on a second here. Why is it every time women make a comment about something software/hardware/game related it 99% of the time is a comment regarding little short of a hostile takeover of the industry as a whole? I think that's a bit overdramatic and overstated as well.

As a 25 year old guy, I'll be the first to tell you: I don't care about booth babes, shiny cars, etc. at E3. I want games. I'm not going to love some crap game just because a woman who is considered "hot" is standing next to the booth as eyecandy. It matters not to me, as I know the only reason they are there is to try and change my mind on the game itself, thus making me less receptive to it in the process and actually reaffirming my fears in my mind that the game will be sub-par. If you feel that females at E3, or cars, or big green flashing arrows that say "BUY THIS" are going to change the mind of a true gamer about something, you are mistaken.

This E3 for me was a total letdown for one reason: I got sick and tired of dealing with the "women are taking over" attitude that was rampant throughout. If you're a REAL girl gamer, your interest should be on the games themselves at E3 and not whining about props that litter the showroom floor. We all know why they are there. You're not a genious for pointing out the obvious. No props to you. I'm all about women and gaming. Heck, what could be a better combination? But come on, this take-over crap is ridiculous. The "PMS" clan was my second biggest annoyance this year, right behind Paris Hilton. I downloaded the press briefings from Xbox Live and after only ten seconds of them talking, I was done. They are so full of themselves, which is funny because they've probably been pwn3d at Halo more times than my nine year old niece. You can just look at them and tell they're only there for the attention, yet legions of "girl gamers" (they would be much more appropriately labeled as "extreme feminists") jumped for joy. And now you're saying that hardcore gamers are "losing relevance"? Let's take a look at that, shall we?

For one, yes, women outnumber men when it comes to players of casual games ACCORDING TO SURVEYS. Let me ask you something: Do a survey of people who buy gaming PCs. Come back and tell me what percentage of those people are women. My point? Women will be more likely to play minesweeper or solitaire. However, they are playing those games on a PC purchased most likely by their husbands (there are exceptions to every rule. Save your "You're generalizing..you're a hypocrite" crap for someone who cares...I don't) and guess what? If it's a gaming machine, and it costs thousands, I'd be willing to bet that he's a pretty hardcore gamer. So you see, there's a relevance tie right there. And you can also carry that fact over into the console market as well. For example, who do you know is going to buy an X360 to play nothing but Live Arcade? Nobody...unless you're a fool. Most of those old games you can find for a few dollars on ebay if you have the original system to play them on. The fact is, hardcore gamers make up a large percentage of the early adopter crowd. And guess what? No manufacturer is going to want a weak launch. So who do you think they target? When Xbox 360 came out, did Peter Moore go on about how you can play Pac-Man and how cool it is...how the 360 is totally based around Xbox Live arcade? No. He, and the rest of the Microsoft marketing team, talked about triple-core processors, RAM memory, and branch prediction. Why? Because hardcore gamers, yes, that group that you say are losing relevance in the gaming market, is the TARGET AUDIENCE for a successful launch. The hardcore sector is the very reason that "tech specs" were leaked on PS3, as well as other consoles. To build hype in the HARDCORE MARKET. Ms. Smith doesn't care about technical numbers. And she wasn't targeted. And she won't be. Not initially. Not until she gets a bigger share of the gaming market. It's just like anything else. Home design shows, cooking shows..we see these targeted towards women all the time. And I expect that. I don't go ranting and raving about how there's a ton of guys that cook better than women...because nobody gives a crap. Me least of all. What is the deal with the persistent inferiority complex female gamers feel the need to go on and on about? Just play the games like everyone else, or don't. Vote with your dollar, not with your b.s. Seriously.

In closing, I'll just say this: If you're a woman and you see a booth babe standing next to a game that you've been waiting to play, and that causes you NOT to play that game and totally go against it, you are NOT a gamer. To say that E3 will change so much in two years that it will be beyond recognition as it is now is total speculation, and far-fetched speculation at that based on current market share and past E3's. Right now, while women do no doubt play more casual games than men, men are STILL the target audience because they are STILL where the money is at. That's a simple fact, not a machismo statement. No, I'm not posting a link to some stupid survey that proves it. It's simply common sense. And if you need hard evidence, it's not hard to find. My prediction: the next E3 will not feature pink-painted walls, purple floors, and a 65 foot HDTV playing tech demos for some daytime soap video game. If you want respect in a new area that you are venturing into, you treat the people who have been doing it for years with respect. In turn, your opinion becomes respected more and you are more likely to see changes in your favor. Becoming a female gamer and then instantly shooting off at the mouth about how hardcore gaming is dead and the female sector is taking over does nothing for earning you respect. You can site surveys all day. It won't change the fact that publishers and developers will keep delivering to their bottom-line increasing audience. And hardcore gamers, like myself, will just sit back and laugh at your ridiculous antics.

Make more games in the same vein as Chris Crawford's *Trust and Betrayal* or the indie experimental game *Facade* and I'll bet you'd get girl gamers engaged on a much greater level. Social situations and intrigue. You just need to give girls their own form of bloodletting. They may not be into physical violence, but I'll bet they'd get into social violence - like gossip. Get a game where you can kill people with gossip, and they'll be all over it. By all means, let's continue to encourage gamers to indulge the most base elements of their humanity!

Positive stars for Ethan Thomas. I'm happy that my wife, my daugther, and my mom are playing Brain Age with me, but they were not the ones that never had to think twice when I dropped $190 on the DS. (got an imported gray, hence the markup).

$10,000,000,000 X 15% = $1,500,000,000
OR ONE POINT FIVE BILLION DOLLARS per year.
