E3: Gears of War mural, completed

Apologies for the delay in updating you on the status of Kurt Wenner's giant chalk Gears of War painting adorning the floor of the Los Angeles Convention Center. Our photograph didn't turn out so well but -- lucky for us -- we managed to find one on Flickr, courtesy of user da.budhha.
We'll let you know when Microsoft releases the time-lapse video of the process.

You know, he did an amazing job, but I honestly think that's a fugly design.

Wow. That's cool. It looks like doom3.
Reeve @ May 14th 2006 11:06PM
Wow. Thanks for posting the finished work-- as well as the various stages in progress this past week-- it's been a long time since I've seen such excellent "trompe de l'oeil" work (and displayed on a floor, no less!).
Looking forward to the time-lapse video!

"Wow. That's cool. It looks like doom3."
Except Doom 3 is crap and Gears of War is actually a good game.

"Except Doom 3 is crap and Gears of War is actually a good game."
What a rather blunt statement
Doom 3 may have not fulfilled its promises but comparing it with a game that's not even out yet is just stupid.

The frame-rate seems low. I thought they were working on that.
Sabre @ May 14th 2006 11:28PM
It's still a WIP and based on the demo I watched at E3, it was easily better then anything that Doom was showing when it was still a WIP.
Mark D. @ May 14th 2006 11:35PM
I think the source material they gave him must have been old, because it doesn't look like the Locust in Gears atm.
That's not taking anything away from his art. I went to his site and he's clearly a world class artist.

"based on the demo I watched at E3"
while i'm looking forward to the game as well, i believe that this quote may evidence the problem with your points.
Trixie @ May 14th 2006 11:56PM
So, what's going to happen with that mural? Sell/keep?
Pikachelsea @ May 15th 2006 12:01AM
Wow, it's... hideous!
KevinM @ May 15th 2006 12:13AM
Doom 3 is 2 years old, this game better look better.
Sabre @ May 15th 2006 12:26AM
Sorry but there was nothing "original" or "mind blowing" in Doom 3...it was just another mindless ID Software game.
boots (former bd (former b)) @ May 15th 2006 12:51AM
And this could end up just being "another mindless Epic game".
MegaMatt @ May 15th 2006 12:58AM
very very nice
oz @ May 15th 2006 1:22AM
It's beautiful! It's too bad, after all the excitement is over, that it'll be left behind for the mallrats and winos to wipe their feet on and gob tobacco juice all over it! o-o-o gross! lol!
burninhell @ May 15th 2006 2:05AM
I'm sure that the artist(s) don't need me to mention the influence of Tibetan sand mandalas on this awesome real-time work but...anyway, this was a very cool and welcome idea and I think we should encourage this sort of creativity...good work!

Just a quick comment on the Doom3/Gears of War comparison:
Doom3, while not being an outstanding game in terms of concept or gameplay, holds the credit of being the first game with true global dynamic lighting. Prior to Doom3, game engines had to use a series of "Lighting maps" in order to trick your eyes into viewing a believable 3D space - Lighting on the character, the level, the monsters, and even the weapons were all handled through different procedures but synchronised to give the feel of a cohesively lit scene. Carmack's Doom3 engine was the first to change that and allow real time lighting, shadows, and reflective surfaces. Say what you will about how its just a rehash of previous Doom games (well, it is) but you can't deny its impact on gaming from a purely technical standpoint. Gears of War, I am willing to bet, is either built on the Doom3 engine or borrows heavy amounts of inspiration from it. I have no doubt that Gears of War will be a better gaming experience, but slandering an older game just because its older? That seems silly to me. Enjoy the games you have, and in a few years, something will come out to put Gears of War to shame, and the cycle will continue.

That looks like WH40k stuff, Genestealers and Tyrnids and such. The character in the game already have chainswords on their guns and look like Space Marines quite a bit.
Any idea if Games Workshop is going to sue the pants off these guys?
Staticneuron @ May 15th 2006 9:28AM
I really admire this guy's patience and creativity. This mural is an awesome piece of artwork.

You're welcome for the photo!! :D

Ah... that reminds me, did you see the "bum" walking around it during the day, too?? Was part of the whole Gears of War thing: http://www.flickr.com/photos/da_buddha/146037031/in/photostream/
Daniel M. @ May 15th 2006 10:54AM
ahhh the irony of hiring an actor to play a bum...
mocax @ May 15th 2006 11:12AM
I like these illusiony arty thingies
It'll be nice if he does one with Nintendo characters jumping out of a pipe or something
greenfly @ May 15th 2006 12:42PM
how do they put a hole in the floor?
Joking it looks great
hotboyz @ May 16th 2006 10:54PM
like nothing else in the convention center!
good job.
