John Woo's Stranglehold hands-on

Take the gun out of your mouth folks. John Woo's Stranglehold looks like more than just a shot-to-sh-t cash-in on the Hong Kong action auteur's single-syllable last name. Senior Game Designer Patrick Curry (a loyal Joystiq reader) pulled me out of the crowd for a little quality time with Midway's homage to Woo's bullet ballets and I came away impressed. This 360 game is from the same team that did Psi-Ops: Mindgate Conspiracy, an awesome Xbox title that was on everybody's "best game that no one played" list. After commiserating with the staff over the inexplicable disappointing sales of that game, I picked up the controller to try out its "spiritual" next-gen sequel. Stranglehold plays like Max Payne with, better graphics, more style and more ridiculously cool slow-mo moves. Midway's pitch focused on the destructable environment, which allowed me to blow up everything from wall tiles to frozen pigs. Combined with an array of Woo-ish bullet-time maneuvers, the level I saw did a good job of recreating the vibe from the tea house shoot-out scene in Hard-boiled. I asked executive producer Brian Eddy for the honest truth about Woo's involvement and was told he really did write the script. He also personally nixed blown off limbs, which sadly aren't his stylistic bag. Fortunately, he does prefer that perforated enemies stack up a la The Killer rather than disappear, so the team is working on that feature. They're also adding melee moves beyond the standard pistol whip present in the current build. Employing a common E3 tactic, Midway is keeping multiplayer details close to the shoulder holster, but I was assured that bullet-time will be implemented in an innovative way. Oh, and no warehouse levels.

As the first relevant post on hand, I find the news about John Woo actually writing the script awesome +1 :D

What the -hell- does that have to do with Stranglehold?! Idiot. In other news, I probably wouldn't have even given this game a second glance if it weren't for this quick write-up. Now I'm inerested...

But, will we see Woo on Wii?
blindrocket @ May 14th 2006 11:04AM
This is also a PS3 title, looking forward to it!

not really related but when are they going to do a psi-ops sequel? that game was very good despite the kinda cheesy characters and it would be a perfect title for wii, IMO. midway or whom ever, if you're listening,
Do It!

Michael, Brian Eddy, the exec producer of Stranglehold, was also the lead on Psi-Ops. I spent a while talking to him about my love for that game. Unfortunately there are no plans for a next-gen sequel--unless you count Stranglehold, which was developed by the same team. Neither of us had an idea as to why Psi-Ops wasn't a huge hit. Notice that it's gameplay is completely ripped off by Silver the Hedgehog in the next-gen Sonic.

From what I've seen, it seems that the game is going to be coming out on PC as well as the next gen consoles. I'm going to wait for it then. If it plays like Max Payne, it'll be worth the wait since I don't like the controls of Max Payne-style games on consoles.
Thanks for the write-up. I've been looking forward to this game since I first heard about it. I'm also happy that Chow Yung Fat will be doing the voice acting for Inspector Tequila. ^_^

I have no doubt that this game will be extremely popular but I wonder if anything original can still come out of it given that Woo's style has been cloned in games for years and years. His stuff has been hijacked so often it's almost cliche now.
To say he's late into the game (Hi mom, I made a pun) is an understatement. In my opinion, we should give him a lifetime achievement award in the game industry and leave it at that. My gut feeling is that making a John Woo game now, no matter how good it may be, would fall flat... What an unfortunate entry for him into the industry.

This is basically a remake of John Woo's film 'Hard Boiled', very similar to bits ive seen in the trailer. But i'm happy with that, gameplay looks incredible.
whinger @ May 15th 2006 10:16AM
epobirs: If he gets to try the system out, I'm sure Wii will wow Woo.
Nathan @ May 15th 2006 1:34PM
@12 Not a remake... a sequel to Hard Boiled.
John Woo's movie artistry has been borrowed in games so many times it's about time Woo gets his own game. And with a top-shelf team behind the wheel this game is gonna be awesome, no doubt.
Sabre @ May 15th 2006 1:49PM
The game (if I remember correctly) takes place 10 years after the events in Hard Boiled.
I was hanging out with a couple of their level/game designers and artists all weekend since my buddy is working on the game. Some of the levels they already have done are pretty awesome...but I ain't saying anything :-P

"This is also a PS3 title, looking forward to it!"
What I would like to know, is what will be different between the 360 and the PS3 versions. This and the several other titles for both consoles.
Will the differences between console versions justify the cost difference for the majority who will just play games?
Anyway, it's good to hear that this game is a "gooder". I was concerned it would be another lame one.
