Sony can't sell PSPs in Europe! OMG WTF?! [update 3]
We've been wanting to put this post together for a while but always lacked the image to do it justice, so imagine our glee at spotting the advertisement at right while strolling through London's Soho district.
When the Xbox 360 launched in Japan, certain English-speaking bloggers jumped all over photographs like this one to support their claims that the Xbox 360 had been marked down to about $170 USD because retailers were desparate to rid themselves of inventory. At the time, we refused to blog about this, because we knew that retailers were not, in fact, discounting the Xbox 360 but were bundling it with a cell phone contract. Editorially, we felt that any site that picked up the story was doing its readers a disservice.
One site even used the photograph to support the following dramatic lead sentence, "The train wreck that is the 360 Japan Launch continues."
In fact, the photograph had nothing to do with the volume of Xbox 360 sales.Fast forward to today. By that same (faulty) logic, some Japanese blogger visiting London this month will go back home and breathlessly report that PSPs are in such low demand in the UK that they're being given away totally and completely free of charge. (This is of course patently false, as a cell phone contract is very lucrative. Baiting customers with an attractive consumer electronics device is a tactic used the world over.)
The point is that the advert at right tells us nothing about how the PSP is faring in Europe. This isn't a post about the PSP at all. It's a post about English bloggers in Japan who mislead their readership about the state of affairs in Japan. The mere fact that retailers consider the PSP (or Xbox 360) to be good bait for a lucrative cellular contract is actually a positive indicator that implies that both devices are attractive to consumers.
[Update 1: reworked the post, as I did a horrible job getting my point across the first time.]
[Update 2: even more rewording. Dang.]
[Update 3: It's SoHo in NYC, but Soho in London. Got it!]

Umm....this post is very confusing. I've read it twice and still don't understand???
Conrad Quilty-Harper @ May 18th 2006 10:34AM
These deals have been going round for a while now (I'd say at least 6 months). You've got to sign up for a long phone contract, so I'd say that Sony are earning more money through this deal (by taking a cut of the contract/phone calls) than they're losing.
vc @ May 18th 2006 10:34AM
Jon, you need to click the link in the second paragraph and take a moment to understand the image that's there.
Momus @ May 18th 2006 10:35AM
Beeeeeeyyyyooowwwwwwwwwwww???KPRASH, BOOOMMSKTCH!!!!!!!
Chris @ May 18th 2006 10:36AM
basically when you take out a contract for a mobile phone with T-Mobile they will give you a top of the line phone (that sony one cost about £250) and a FREE PSP (about £170) and you pay £35 a month.
Marc @ May 18th 2006 10:38AM
I'm a little confused as well. Is the PSP selling poorly in Europe or is this just an advert that could confuse a non-english speaking person into thinking that the PSP is selling poorly?
vc @ May 18th 2006 10:39AM
Oh Jesus, I can see that this post didn't make the point I wanted it to make. I'm re-writing it now.
Clint @ May 18th 2006 10:42AM
Since the PSP has been out over a year now, it's surely not selling as well as last year. The thing about the Xbox 1.5 is it had just been released and still wasn't selling. They've already sold millions of PSPs in Japan. What's the Xbox 1.5 number sold in Japan again?
ac @ May 18th 2006 10:44AM
But... aside from the advert for the free psp, how is the psp doing in regards to sales and software attach rate? Shouldn't you have listed some figures to back up this headline? gamegossip.com usually has some sales figures somewhere on their site....
Mupwangle @ May 18th 2006 10:44AM
This has been going on for a while with (mainly 3rd party) phone suppliers in the UK. If you go to onestopphoneshop.com (Carphone warehouse) and various others you can get a PSP (Giga Pack version), a 17" TFT TV or an Xbox360 Core pack.
They've been doing this sort of thing for years. I remember getting a Gameboy color not long after it came out free with a phone.
JodyAnthony @ May 18th 2006 10:45AM
CLINT, YOU CLEVER DOG! CALLING IT XBOX1.5 INSTEAD OF XBOX360! I HAVE NEVER HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE!
dsub @ May 18th 2006 10:46AM
I get it. Not sure if it's been rewritten or not.
I definately agree though vc, all to often things like this seem to get blown out of proportion by people. Just because someone is giving PSP's away doesn't mean they aren't selling well, if anything it means they are selling good, otherwise it wouldn't really be an incentive to a consumer as it is here. Another good example would have been "Mountain Dew is giving away a 360 every 10 seconds they must be selling horrible in America".
Sean @ May 18th 2006 10:47AM
Made sense to me. The point is, us english speaking folk completely misinterpreted that photo of the prices in Japan. Who knows why it was cut in half? So he's speculating that when Japanese go to visit Europe, and they see this ad, they might think that the PSP is selling so poorly over there that they're now giving it away for free. That probably wouldn't happen but he's just making a point.
Reddrive @ May 18th 2006 10:47AM
MARC:
The point is by just looking at the pic one could be led to believe "Man they are having so much trouble selling them, now they are giving them away"
When in reality it's when it first came out it was the fast selling handheld in the UK. Chart-track.com can get the weekly sales figures if you subscibe.
ChrisR @ May 18th 2006 10:48AM
Actually it's more a case of being the other way round. T-mobile are stupidly expensive compared to other networks here like O2 and orange so they have to gimmick to get people to join.
Actually, saying that, I just realised orange are giving away xboxes with the k750i
Gonzo @ May 18th 2006 10:50AM
My wife & I wouldn't have ever gotten PSPs if you couldn't get them for free. You can get a free one in the states too, just be carefull of the scams and try to join a "conga" or something like that.
About the European freebies? I think they would've sold allot more if they tightened the launch dates. By the time it was selling in Europe:
a. impatient gamers already had one from someplace like liksang.com or
b. already read through all the complaints about dead pixels and fragile craftsmanship and decided to wait for the second version.
My friend Ian (you know he's from the UK with a name like that) had the latter excuse: he was already into the DS's games and the only psp titles I could really recommend were Burnout and Luminies.
Birki69 @ May 18th 2006 10:51AM
its nothing that special, at least not in germany. you dont get this kind of offerings with every phone, especially not with the big carriers, but though 3rd party distributers.
here is a site that has similar offerings, even if the phones are not as new as the ones above, i hope the link is persistant, i figured it is better to translate it:
http://www.babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=de_en&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.teleska.de%2Fhandy_bundle_angebote.php
Atrix @ May 18th 2006 10:52AM
I wish they did more of this here in the States. I have been looking for a way to get a second PSP, so I can play with the new firmwares without dropping another $200.
SkinLab @ May 18th 2006 10:53AM
The fact that T-mobile is giving away an expensive device like a PSP is more indicative that T-mobile is the one struggling for sales (which may or may not be true). The idea is to give away an expensive gift to lure consumers in to buy their products.
Darrel @ May 18th 2006 10:56AM
All I can say is that their english-fu is weak.
fivehorizons @ May 18th 2006 10:59AM
Very good post overall especially listing the fact you didnt want to do a diservice to the readers. You sometimes take it for granted the blog you read is up for hits and not the reader but today Joystiq proves to me they care about the reader.
clicky @ May 18th 2006 10:59AM
But they must be selling poorly! They are giving them away all over the internets. All you have to do is punch a monkey on a banner ad!!!!!!!!!!
burn23 @ May 18th 2006 11:02AM
I wish tMobile gave me a free PSP when I renewed my 2 year contract..
bastards
Ad @ May 18th 2006 11:08AM
I've seen actual sales figures for Japan where the PSP is getting spanked all over the place by the DS Lite, anyone have figures for Europe and US?
Mupwangle @ May 18th 2006 11:13AM
>> I wish tMobile gave me a free PSP when I renewed my 2 year contract..
Unless its changed in the last couple of days, T-mobile have nothing to do with these deals. They were all 3rd party. I bought a phone from them direct and got a discount line rental instead.
bapenguin @ May 18th 2006 11:16AM
HAHA. I love the backhand attack at that "other" blog. That site is such a joke I set up this: http://blowtaku.blogspot.com/
Did that a few months back. It's just ridiculous that site is even taken seriously.
Ian Abbott @ May 18th 2006 11:18AM
Just to let you know in London it's not 'SoHo' with a big H, it's 'Soho'. London's Soho was named after a 17th century hunting call when the area was a royal hunting park. New York's "SoHo" (South of Houston) was named as a play on London's Soho...
Remember - NYC big H, London little h. It's important. :P
Night Elve @ May 18th 2006 11:24AM
And yet another Sony related post on Joystiq. :P
martin @ May 18th 2006 11:24AM
Interesting. My Cell Phone contract is up around the same time the Wii and the PS3 come out. Might be a good 2 years for me this time!!!
Swegamer @ May 18th 2006 11:25AM
I am not sure of your understanding of the european phone market. But things are tough around here. At least in Sweden. There are tons of opportunities to get stuff for "free" when you sign up.
In fact folks have been given a free PSP since basically the first day the console was released.
And nowadays you see chains giving away a "free" 360 if you buy your lcd-tv from them.
It is all about marketing basically.
riffgod @ May 18th 2006 11:29AM
I wish my mobile phone company wanted to keep me badly enough to give away a free psp.
I guess us citizens of the United States are too eager to sign a contract on our mobile phones. We should hold out for more. Screw the crappy free latest crappy phone model with a 2 year contract.
I may hop across the pond just to take advantage of this deal. I hope it's not a 10 year contract.
WizarDru @ May 18th 2006 11:35AM
Sony's PSP had the biggest launch of a handheld in the UK back in September, easily selling more units than the DS in March 05. Things cooled after that. As of February, more DSes had sold than PSPs, with 2.4 Million PSPs to 3.7 Million DSes. Source: http://palgn.com.au/article.php?id=3897
Neither one is doing poorly; however, the DS is generally selling better, a trend that will probably continue with the release of the DS-lite.
In the US, the PSP and DS are roughly holding even in hardware sales (at least in April), but so is the GBA, amazingly. In software sales, however, the NDS is a clear leader with titles like Metroid Prime Hunters and Animal Crossing pushing up into the range of the consoles software sales. With the release of the new Mario game, I'd expect that this trend will continue.
The best game of April for the DS, Brain Age, just about doubled the PSP's best game, MLB 06 The Show, with roughly 90,000 to 46,000, respectively.
http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=19055
Some of this certainly could be attributed to the fact that many PSP owners use the device more for multimedia than for games.
Lenbot @ May 18th 2006 11:35AM
Amen
It must be costing the company some kind of money to support that perhaps not though. The point is they could be bundling a number of handheld systems or even the ps2 for that matter but there not because obviously this to most people is a good deal. I would be happyier if they had a DS-Lite packaged with it but it really is a tempting offer. I think if they had that deal in Canada and for the same price I might be so inclined to get one and then sony only has to wait untill all my friends get one. I am sure that those count as sales towards Sony's total sales for psp, I doubt they would just give them to nokia though they might. It's amazing how some people want to comment on how a system is selling, I buy if according to what has good games not that it isn't selling well. Why I wouldn't have a dreamcast if that were the case.

But the 360 was selling horribly in Japan and continues to do so...
Here is one of 40 million articles showing the failed Japan launch of the 360 (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=17068)
The point is convuluted b/c your example of this being similar to the 360 launch proves the exact opposite point that you are attempting to make. The 360 launch really did that poorly.

"This isn't a post about the PSP at all. It's a post about English bloggers in Japan who mislead their readership about the state of affairs in Japan. "
Weren't you the guy that posted the article about the "NES classic" Paperboy going to XBOX live? This from a Midway press release that trumpeted the release of the more popular UMK3 to XBOX live and from Paperboy being released for just about every home system that existed at that time.
greg @ May 18th 2006 11:41AM
this has been going on for ages. 2 months ago my mate got a white one with an 18 month t-mobile contract, and they only came out here on monday.
he plans to sell it and get a DSlite and starfox DS, along with some spare cash. now isnt that some shit? surprise surprise... people have realised that the PSP is junk now, especially with the DS's hot games
Brad @ May 18th 2006 11:52AM
This is just like that time when Best Buy couldn't sell all of those $400 gift cards so they had to give them away with MSN.
anonymous @ May 18th 2006 11:56AM
you get advertisments like this forfree ipod nano's, i think they sell pretty fine in europe.
draco @ May 18th 2006 12:14PM
bah! I get a (arguably) better plan, for only about 10 pounds (I dont know its 15 canadian) which has 200 7am-6pm minutes and unlimited 6pm-7am, all the bells and whistles (all id, call waiting, forward ect..)(and the free phone)
for the extra 25 pounds or about 40$ canadian a month I can buy my own PSP in a half year or so (if I chose to)
This is how they make their money, making you think your getting something for nothing when in reality they are really just giving you a loan. wonder what the disconnection charge is to leave them, maybe get the free phone and PSP then pay the 200$ (what it costs CDN to leave a network) and sell off the phone on ebay and PSP make some money
Andy @ May 18th 2006 12:19PM
Is this Joystiq openly bashing Kotaku for poor journalistic integrity? That's kind of funny - the pot is calling the kettle black.

Thanks, Ian Abbott. I learned something new today. It's been corrected.
Frexy @ May 18th 2006 12:31PM
Well I don't know...
I know one thing for sure, the DS is indeed selling better atm in Europe, and it's still gaining popularity (well, that is, if I can use the example of me getting out my DS and seeing all the peoples reaction (including girls - CHICKMAGNET =p) and what games I have).
Nontheless, there's been a promo over here (Belgium) during the winter which stated that if you came to the store with your skiing/boarding outfit, or you could prove you broke an arm/leg during winter holidays, you'd get a PSP for less money, plus a game for free...
And just today, I saw a billing board where the PSP has been priced ?200 (!) That's a ?50 cut! (I can take a pic if you want proof) I was quite amazed... It even got me thinking; 'does this thing sell that bad?'
But that's just the fanboy speaking =) SIT BOY! *hit*

its cuz psp suck and nintendo ds lite rules better games better system nintendi is so smart know that they did so good with ds lite in japan think of how ell the Wii will do way better than ps3 from i saw how long the lines were for the the ds. Wii and ds lite will dominate japan(important to do good mostly in japan) not so sure about europe and north america but i see nintendo doing really good in japan and so doing good in the console war. ds lite and Wii rule
idioteraser @ May 18th 2006 12:46PM
A look at the Japanese game sales show the psp is at the bottom of the barrel. The DS games dominate the charts. Imports of DS games are all the rage too. Cooking Mama is coming to the US due to all the imports of it. I mean the DS any sort of concept can be made into a fun game. I mean a game where you are a lawyer, or a cook peeling vegetables, cracking eggs wouldn't be fun on the psp but on the DS with a touch screen watch out.
clark @ May 18th 2006 1:06PM
they give a free psp and a game from the preowned section for free when you buy a DS and 2 games...some of the PSPs are even the rare 1.0 and 1.5 :O
its shocking...
James Sorensen @ May 18th 2006 1:13PM
the fact someone is using psp for their contracts doesn't mean the psp can't sell... just more sony bashing i guess... the cell provider still pays for the psp's
Aux @ May 18th 2006 1:28PM
I'm all about journalistic integrity, but why can't any of the writers on this page figure out how to make a link open up another browser window? I mean seriously, do you enjoy taking your users to another site when they want to read the linked page?
Michael Price @ May 18th 2006 1:54PM
It's not just PSPs being given away with T-Mobile phones, check this link out:
http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/gift/xbox/
Free Xbox 360 with a few contracts there.
Frexy @ May 18th 2006 1:56PM
actually, I think T-mobile want to target the 'cool' audience with their cellphones.
And leave it or take it, the PSP is still considered to be a cool device. Just check it's looks.
And, leave it or take this too; looks still sell...
So, methinks it's just a little stunt. Trying to sell their cellphones, and you get a real cool thing with it too!
Not exactly meaning the PSP is selling poor...
Dork @ May 18th 2006 2:03PM
If you look at its sales compared to the DS, yeah, it's not selling well. Which is also why this is being offered for free. Sony has to dump them somehow. I'm surprised we haven't seen any signs for free Gamecubes yet.
