OH MY GOD! You got me on the misspelling of grammar (a common mistake on my part), but I don't feel that I need a comma after "so." I think the sentence flows just fine without the pause, and I believe it can be written either way.

The point I was trying to make is that I can't understand some of elle's argument because of bad grammar. The paragraph I posted before is a prime example: "Either way, as a FPS fan, I'm not going to get Gears of War. Red Steel will also probably be more of the same after seeing the E3 coverage of it, as will Metroid Prime 3. Halo 3 will be the ultimate more-of-the-same game ? which means it'll be fun as hell until I'm done with it."

I'm inclined to side with elle on this one. Before I'm shouted down, let me say that I think CliffyB's probably a pretty terrific guy in person. Brandon Reinhart's (Greenmarine for those with old school knowledge) an acquaintance of mine, and he's had uniformly positive things to say about him.

The original Unreal still stands out in my mind as being years ahead of its time. I've waited for years for the promise that game showed to be lived up to and exceeded again. Unreal Tournament was a fun, well-built game clearly designed to head off Quake III Arena; it's a shitty business tactic, but it resulted in market competition that I think was ultimately good for the FPS market back in 1999. UT2003 was the first really visible misstep on Epic's part: a high-profile game clearly shoved out the door before it was finished due to publisher demand. It was possible to salvage the situation by continuing to release add-on packs that would have brought it up to snuff, and for a while that was done.

Then UT2004 was released, and despite the inclusion of a great deal of identical content the games would not be mutually compatible. The fact that those who had purchased what was effectively a work in progress could buy UT2004 and get a whopping $10 back for re-purchasing a large quantity of the same content didn't sit well with many people, who understandably felt duped.

Lest we forget, Cliff was executive producer for Unreal II. Remember now? That's a non-trivial position to hold, and that game was widely regarded as a formulaic disappointment. Furthermore, the multiplayer component was removed - apparently not terribly long before the game's release, as the installer features shots from the multiplayer mode and the tutorial has a brief deathmatch segment - "because it might conflict with demand for UT2003." I don't proclaim it's All His Fault(tm), but it's kind of remarkable that he's gotten a free pass after that debacle.

There's a time and a place for add-ons; some of my favorite video game experiences have been with mission packs, user-made total conversions, and Epic's very own map packs. But if a world of episodic, ADD-catering content and MMORPG payment models reminiscent of classic Pacman (i.e. an eternal succession of your financial pellets being eaten, with the odd power pill representing an add-on pack) is the brave new world of video gaming, then count me the hell out.

Finally, Mister Panic's saying elle belongs in the kitchen isn't a shining example of lowbrow comedy. It's a stupid, childish joke that dismisses her perspective in the most hatefully sexist way possible while contributing nothing to the discussion. If anything it's a calculated way of saying, "I can't (or don't feel like) articulating an argument against your opinion, so I'm going to engage in an irrelevant ad hominem attack that will get the support of people who disagree with you."

I have to agree with Elle. If you are not going to put the game on the show floor at E3, why go. E3 is what E3 is for. Nintendo successfully demoed some games for the Wii and had a 4 hr wait each day but it did not stop them. They set a time limit and had attendants to enforce it. I'm starting to think that maybe you guys wanted Cliffy to take you on a prom date. Especially the guy that called him a hottie. That is sick.
Futhermore, when he stated that the Wii must have a compelling fps underneath. I hope he was not talking about the "no plot", "run and gun" unrealtournament games. Those games are not compelling at all.

Other than demoing at E3, I agree 100% with Elle. Fanboys sure do love being sucked dry :)

People are so quick to criticise Elle; it seems so gendered here! If someone criticises Microsoft or Sony there are no issues, but yeah, this page reads like an anthropology excursion into a Counter-Strike LAN cafe.

Elle's main point seemed to be not that FPS games suck, but their culture sucks. A monotony of design and gameplay has completely drained any sense of fun from the genre. At least we used to have a Redneck Rampage.

Cliffy B also comes off like an arrogant marketing jerk in this interview? You want to make "exciting IP"? Go directly to hell. You want to make advertisments, go make them. There needs to be some accountability on the part of programmers to discuss games as at the very least "games", IP sounds like we're discussing engines.

Oh wait, its Epic. We are. Doy.

Wow, so many people attacking Elle here. I actually agree with most of Elle's comments. If someone else has already stated their point, there's no need for everyone to dogpile on.

Gears of War will be good. Great if you're an FPS fan, decent if not. I don't own a 360, but if I did, it would fall on the side of 'meh' with me. I'm much busier playing all the RPGs I haven't finished...

And episodic content sucks. I remember too much of that back in the days of shareware. Unless it's really cheap, and even then, it has to be rather substantial, not a stupid horse or something.

Now go play New Super Mario Bros. It's better than 90% of the regurgitated crap these days, despite the fact that it was regurgitated from the heyday of 2-D Mario games.

Sarge out.
