SFII on Xbox Live: what's taking so long?
While attention has largely been drawn to the barrage of new titles announced for Xbox Live during E3, those gamers who prefer flaming punches to plummeting blocks are likely to have wondered as to the whereabouts of one of Capcom's most revered franchises. Way back in January, Microsoft revealed that Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting was destined to hit Xbox Live Arcade in March. An accompanying Capcom press release was more vague and instead claimed that the title was due for release in "early 2006." It seems neither one was correct.A June 10th release was most recently rumored, but that has since been crushed by the Capcom PR machine and replaced with a friendly notice that reads: We'll tell you about it "sometime in the near future." It's hard not to be amused by this situation, especially given the deadly efficiency at which Capcom has released Street Fighter II games in the past few years. You'd think it would be second nature to append Hyper Fighting, a game that's already been made, to a list that includes Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition, Street Fighter II The World Warrior, Street Fighter II The New Challengers, Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition and Street Fighter II Ultra Supreme College 2K6 For The Win Alpha Championship: Fourth Beating.
This isn't the first time the series has gone online either, so the explanation that poor net code is holding them back doesn't seem entirely effective. Perhaps the thing that's more frustrating than waiting so long for a classic game to be emulated on a $400 console (dubious d-pad and all) is the lack of information regarding a release date. Or worse yet, what about the price?

Yea, yea, yea, but where's that free Texas Hold'em game????
Dan Choi @ May 23rd 2006 6:13PM
Well, I'm hoping the tease from Capcom's PR machine just means they can't officially announce the June 10th date just yet. At least, I hope that's what it means... (Oh, please let that be the case! =)

Conspiracy Theory # 38
Maybe Sony intervened with the release...
Nate @ May 23rd 2006 6:19PM
I was looking forward to this....
I got a feeling it's not gonna live up to the hype anyway....I mean, how much depth and value could this title offer all these years later? I'm thinking everyone will be playing it the first couple weeks and it will slowly fade out once everyone realizes that it's just Street Fighter II on an updated console.
I'm looking forward to Hoopworld more.
Don Jose @ May 23rd 2006 6:24PM
I was just thinking about this one. I remember some podcast saying that it would be out by the end of April, so you can chalk that one up on your list of missed dates, too.
As for the D-pad, meh. It is the worst D-pad among MS, Nintendo, and Sony, but I'd rather play the game with the anlog stick anyway. It's more arcadey, IMO.
soco @ May 23rd 2006 6:24PM
i'm willing to bed the problem is with the network support. emulated games and rarely work so well, and the timing is much more critical in SFII than in say gauntlet. the smallest hint of lag can totally throw off your game and make internet play worthless. i imagine they're still trying to iron out this problem, and until it's as-good-as-it-gets, it's going to keep getting delayed and just shown at various events.
soco @ May 23rd 2006 6:29PM
grrr. sorry long hours every day for the last few weeks are keeping me from writing sentences that make sense.

You play fighting games with the analog nubbin? Maybe if you lay the controller flat on a table and stab at the button with your fingers, but you know they do sell special arcade like boards for that sort of stuff.
Tim @ May 23rd 2006 6:34PM
I just decided instead of waiting, I'd just buy the arcade game for real, $150 at a garage sale: http://streetfighterarcade.blogspot.com/
Branewalker @ May 23rd 2006 6:42PM
Ah, so cool! I can mention the fact that I made such an arcade stick myself a couple years ago, because the controller was absolutely worthless. The controller in question is GameCube (totally not fot fighting games) and the game that promted it was Soul Calibur II. Incidentally, in searching for information on building Arcade Joysticks, I came across this blog. It's been bookmarked ever since.
So, grab a cheap Xbox 360 controller (off-brand works fine) gut it, and head over to http://www.happcontrols.com/ to get the parts. A little woodworking, a little solder, and about $20 worth of buttons and you should have an appropriately arcadey experience. Much nicer than most special-made "arcade" sticks.
Oh, and the nifty part of my Gamecube stick? I can use it with the Wii when it comes out, and play virtual console games!

Tim-
You are the luckiest man alive finding it for so cheap.
The netcode in Anniversary wasn't bad, and Kaillera's been doing it fine for a good while. It's not much of an excuse. :~
bv @ May 23rd 2006 6:50PM
I can't imagine the net code is difficult at all. In fact, http://www.streetfighteronline.com/ has managed to create an online street fighter game all on their lonesome. I think there's something beyond just code or gameplay that is holding this back, possibly Capcom is not getting the amount of royalties they want? Who knows.

Now gamers in India will be able to enjoy Xbox. Microsoft is launching Xbox 360 in the Indian market this October (http://www.southasiabiz.com/2006/05/microsoft_launching_xbox_360_i.html). A very good news for more than 1 million dedicated gamers in India and hopefully from October you will see more gamers from India visiting this blog.

Am I the only person who'd rather play STA3 over this? I dunno. I had fun on Street Fighter 2 way back when. I had it on my Amiga and everything. But with STA3 on GBA, PSP and Dreamcast, why is everyone so excited about this much more dated version with less characters, arenas and more importantly- those ism's!
Capcom must be making a non-Xbox Live Arcade version of STA3 or something.
Dan Choi @ May 23rd 2006 7:16PM
"Am I the only person who'd rather play STA3 over this?"
I'm sure you've got a lot of company there, Jay -- what with large fanbases for SFA3, SFIII, and MvC2 (without a current Marvel license which EA's got for fighting games, though, porting this over could be tricky) -- but you gotta start somewhere, right? =) Hopefully Capcom will nail the network fundamentals with this release and *progressively* iterate from there (as Capcom has been known to do).

That Lumines Live link in the story doesn't work.
Dan Choi @ May 23rd 2006 7:20PM
The link's pretty close; it's just got the e3-2006 prefix in there. Here's a corrected URL, GunForHire:

I've checked Xbox Live pretty much every day since March and I'm getting a little sick of waiting, too. Either they're adding something to the game (a la Alpha 2 Gold added Cammy), the netcode needs to be tweaked, or they're having issues with something related to the port.
There's no reason they shouldn't be able to add some functional netcode to the game (a la the PC emulators have) and tweak the resolution a little.
I have a feeling that something is either broken in the netcode or they've added some kind of new functionality.
I'm a bit afraid of the d-pad on the 360...but I have high hopes for a 3rd party controller. I've gotten REALLY good at pulling off Zangief's SPD on a PS pad and I fear that the d-pad's placement on the 360 isn't going to let me even come close to replicating it. It's so far from the left of the pad that I end up jumping up/back every time I want to block. It's nearly as bad as an arcade machine with slanted sticks. Using the analog for SF2 = barely possible. With the quick twitch moves needed at times, I question if some of it's even possible with an analog. Going from a block to executing a dragon punch or SPD before the opponent lands would take some thumb speed I've never seen!
RazorElite @ May 23rd 2006 7:34PM
Man I've been waiting for this for awhile now. I've also been waiting for UMK3 and some other cool shooting game. XBL Arcade is full with a bunch of damn puzzle games. Not that anything's wrong with that, but I like to shoot damn it!
ziper @ May 23rd 2006 7:55PM
I'm pretty sure they are converting it from 4:3 to 16:9 like the PSP version uses but not the XBLA version.
Robotic House Plant @ May 23rd 2006 8:40PM
Is there a release schedule of Live games anywhere? I know there have been a bunch announced, but none of them are online yet. Where's Galaga? Texas Hold Em? Hoopworld?
UkuleleSHIMA @ May 23rd 2006 8:48PM
I'm definitely that LIVE never seems to have a release date schedule at all. The games seem to just suddenly appear on Marketplace whenever. You'd think the companies would like to promote a game's release date like they do with the regular releases. Is MS trying to stagger the releases with a certain time frame so each Arcade release gets adequate time to sell without competition?
Tony @ May 23rd 2006 9:19PM
Honestly, I'd rather use that d-pad than the horribly segmented one on PS2/PS3/PS1. Blech.
Imadogg99 @ May 23rd 2006 10:05PM
Hopefully Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 comes out sooner than this, and for 400 M$ points, so I would definitely get it.
ry @ May 23rd 2006 11:05PM
if DOA4 can go online, i can't see the trouble for a game that's HOW many years old?
Seriously, I've played more advanced games like MvC and Vampire Savior on an emulator over the internet with fantastic speed, I agree with someone above who brought up something completely separate from the game itself to something like the contract clauses...
mietha @ May 23rd 2006 11:27PM
I'm guessing the price IS the reason for the delay. If microsoft has it set where publishers can not change their prices after release, which is almost certainly the case, they simple may not be able to decide on a price point and are waiting to see how various things do on live first. It SHOULD be $5, but they're already shot that down. $10 is reasonable if they add something to it, which is likely not the case, other than online play. $15 is just absurd. I will most likely buy it if it is $10. I most certainly will not if it's $15. If they will notice, the two most popular XBLA games are $5 each (Geo Wars and UNO). They will make a lot more money off of it, in the long run, the cheaper it is. However, say they sell though 100k downloads, which is very likely, a $5 difference equals half a million dollars. That's a lot of potential money to turn down. Hopefully they will go with the lower price and put the damn thing out soon. This is just a guess, but there really is no other known reason for it to not be out yet.
Sean @ May 24th 2006 3:35AM
RAMONE!!!!! Tell Capcom to port ALPHA3 instead.
Proteus Zero @ May 24th 2006 7:18AM
I'm done waiting.
The hype has peaked and died already for me. I'm moving on to Street Fighter Alpha Anthology. Sure, Capcom still gets my money but at least I'll be getting a little more bang for my buck and it'll probably be released on time.
boots @ May 24th 2006 9:08AM
Somebody made a point above... why SF2 and not SF3 or SFA? Or all of them? It seems that Capcom and Microsoft want to milk us. Anyway... does anyone know if this will be exclusive, or will it also be offered on PS3 and/or Wii?
Mintz @ May 24th 2006 11:12AM
So I'm not the only who has a problem with the D-pad not responding when I hit a certain direction? That's a relief... Actually, it's not. I want it fixed!
jron @ May 24th 2006 1:56PM
Imadogg99, I've also been waiting for UMK3. Although umk3 is not my favorite MK, it'll still be a lot of fun on live.
jron @ May 24th 2006 2:00PM
Now that you mention it, I've had trouble with my D pad. It gets frustrating selecting the wrong spell on oblivion.... the diagonals seam to be the biggest problem.
Mike @ May 24th 2006 4:39PM
I'm hoping that they're waiting to release a SFII controller around the same time that the XBLA game is released. Playing on the stock controller would not be good.
tbarker @ May 24th 2006 8:57PM
I say who gives a flaming fistf*ck at this point about SFII online!
LongshotX @ May 25th 2006 2:17PM
Maybe their updating the sprite models. The ones from SF2 don't look too good now a days.
Nex @ May 25th 2006 9:12PM
My only question in regards to this game is, "Why Street Fighter 2 Turbo?" Would it have been that much more of a stretch to do Alpha 3 or a downsized port of one of the SF Collections that they released on the Playstation?
Then again, I want you all to go out and buy it so that Capcom might decide to release the Darkstalkers games on XBLA.
Noah @ May 31st 2006 10:29PM
Hey, just played with you and someone else on DOA4 (Chronoah). Add me, thanks!
