Despite having "Fanboy" displayed prominently all over the site, we generally try to avoid any of the negative connotations that usually go with the label. We're anxiously counting down the days minutes until Metal Gear Solid 4 is released, but we're also counting the money in our wallets. It doesn't add up to $600. This hilarious video, assembled from bits and pieces of Sony's E3 press conference, really illustrates how hyperbolic marketing and endless spin can quickly turn against you and reinforce your competitors. Had Sony just showed off a fine array of launch titles instead of trumpeting the arrival of their Blu-Ray trojan horse, they'd be in a much better position now.
Wow, PS3 is really gonna lose the console war to xbox360 and the Wii. you could by both a wii and a 360 and pay the price for a PS3. that video was really gay!!!
I agree that the video is horrible. Don't waste your time on it.
I also agree that Sony has set themselves up for a slow start with the price point and the focus on tech specs rather than the games, but it's a point that has been beat to death. Let's just see how this generation pans out, shall we?
I didn't realize how unelegant the PS3's motion scheme will be. That guy flying the ship thing looked like a total idiot. But I do thank Sony for inventing this new "realtime weapon switching" with which I am not familliar. I mean, if some company came out with a game where you could switch weapons using, say, your mouse's scroll wheel; I'd be all over it. Alas, no one has... until the PS3, with its Teraflops of data-processing ability, finally managed to accomplish this stellar feat!
Nice sarcasm about the real time weapon switching John.
I think other games at least have you disappear the weapon into your backpack instead of the PS3 use of magic sparkles then your new weapon magically apears in these sparkles instead of you know being pulled from your backpack. Let see I think Nintendo did this on the console back in the N64 days with Link.
You can also thank Sony for rightfully correcting the mistakes of history books not mentioning the giant crabs that have been in numerous battles in Japan's feudal period.
Rear view window please other games have had that and they didn't require you to hold something taking one hand away from your controller or two in the case of the psp oh wait that means no hands to use to control the game.
I don't mean to be negative about Sony here, I used to own a PS2 my self, but their consoles have never been that good looking, and the PS3 seems to have made the XBOX mistake, in that it resembles a black construction brick.
Ok, I'm a fan of nintendo more than anything, but why Ludwig, why does Wii fanboy have to come to the level of... Xbox360fanboy? I thought console bashing posts were done only over there. *sigh*
I've really wanted these three videos to get posted though:
Or are most Wii fans rooting for Xbox360? I'm rooting for PiiS3, not Wii60. Well, I'll get all three eventually, but if I had to choose just two, I'd get PiiS3. If it was just one, it'd be Wii of course.
Boots, this isn't a console bashing post. As I said, it makes fun of Sony's ludicrous marketing tactics and the system's high price tag. There's a difference between baselessly attacking a system and criticizing some of its aspects from a consumer standpoint. I can't wait to play MGS4, but I'm not happy about the $600 investment required (especially considering I don't WANT a Blu-Ray player). It doesn't mean I have a fanboy's irrational hate towards the system or the company that makes it.
I'm also not very pleased by the Wii's refusal to support HD and the Xbox 360's teeny tiny hard drive. Complaints, sure, but not hatred. We play games, not platforms. :)
#5 I agree. That DOES sum up how most people viewed it. It made me cringe just watching that video.
#2 Sony may have a slow start? They will get killed in the US at that price point. Sure they will sell out on launch and xmas time, but not Q2, Q3, Q4 of 07 when the people on the fence can go into a store and choose any of the 3. They will be 3rd in the US behind 360 and Wii.
Of course they will most likely still take #1 in Japan, if the Wii does not jump up and bitch slap them into second, which i think they just might.
Sony will not "lose" this round if you count "winning" as being the most consoles sold. They will most likely still have the most world wide when it is said and done. But is it still winning when you enjoy a %60+ market share now and say a %40 - %45 later? I know there share holders will not see that as a win.
Funny boots. I like the first and third videos, but I have to protest the second one.
Oblivion lacks effects that were on MGS on PS2 because Bethesda's programmers didn't take the time to put them in. The game on the whole is very shiny and huge. If you compare Oblivion and Fable, I think oblivion wins hands down just for scale and the world's flexibility.
The third video does a much better job demonstrating a lack up upgrade in art assets. Maybe it's because the graphics are getting good enough, and what they really need is some sort of gameplay or interface innovation. Hmmm, how could they do that... :)
Anyway, this article seemed really out of place on wiifanboy. I guess if had just been posted on joystiq however, the only conversation would have been "Joystiq is obviously biased against micros.. err, Sony! I'm never reading this site again!"
Someone needs to create a Japanese version of Wii60.com, so they can have just as much fun! I will never look at a PS3 without thinking "Giant Crab!" Or Paper Shredder 3 or the like...
One Wiing to rule them all...
Wasn't there a game called Crash and Burn on the 3DO? Maybe they should make the prophetic sequel on Sony...
Konami states they believe the Wii vs PS3 battle will be like the DS vs PSP battle in Japan... Currently the DS is outselling the PSP by 7 to 1! (That number will probably settle to 4 to 1 in a few months. That is where it has been most of the last year.)
Their reasoning: the philosophies behind DS and Wii are similar, as are the PSP PS3 connections. They didn't mention it, but the pricing strategies are even more pronounced.
I do agree that it will take some time to get the "cool" word out to the parents who probably haven't been watching this spectacle. Hopefully Nintendo will have an easy and eye catching way to demo the Wii/Revolution in stores. The difference will quickly become apparent, but you don't know if you don't play... Sony's $600 price tag will provide a shocking incentive for customers to do some research, however. My bet is most PS2 owners walk away with a Wii.
The thing is, most people are in the market for either a Blu-Ray player (about 1%) or a video game console. Those that want one in most cases don't care about the other, and would rather not pay for the other. Convergence is being replaced by hyperdifferentiation as the corporate strategy of choice, and it will show its power in Wii vs. PS3... Maybe we should call this The Last Battle, for Sony! They will be laughed out of the marketplace!
I dunno... Assassin's Creed and MGS 4 make me eerily attracted to the PS3. And this is from someone who's never owned a Playstation console, and very few Sony items in general.
In sidenote, I really wish they had "redesigned" the controller instead of simply "undesigning" it after the boomerang, however. Oh well. I guess familiarity does provide some advantages.
I must say it was a little disappointing that the impressive (though awful) Tiger Woods clip didn't make it in there somewhere.
During the conference it seemed as though six minutes sluggishly passed as they showed how watching the Tiger looking sullen for a three second animation would, "as you can see...(quoted from the presenter)...change the way we experience gaming!" - Yeah, I paraphrased a little, but it's one thing to try to tell people why this is a revolution and another thing to show it.
Nintendo deserves all of the buzz they've generated as their slogan is backed by substance: PLAYING = BELIEVING!
I don't think this post is biased at all. But, the video is, so if anyone has a completely objective clip of the conference that would be sublime.
Still, you don't have to be a fanboy to ridicule Sony for their arrogance. Honestly, the only thing I'm looking forward to now is Fumito Ueda's next masterpiece, which I hope gets released way late in the console's life so I can actually afford it.
I did watch the event (on line, mind you) that Monday and was surprised at how poorly it seemed to flow. I should probably stop describing it so that you can watch it with fresh eyes, but if the crowd's reaction (or lack thereof) is any indication, I was probably right.
u know, i used to like sony, and as far as current gen consoles go, if i'd ever taken the time and money to buy a second console after my GC, it probably would've been a PS2, cuz i really hate X-Box. but sony in this generation has just been showing waaay too much animosity towards nintendo, and always seeming like their entire purpose was, not to sell their console, but to destroy nintendo. and i just can't let that slide. so for that reason and that reason only, i like this video. beyond that, it was kinda funny, and they could've found some funnier footage, although the giant crab thing was hilarious...
I wouldn't really consider myself a fanboy (though I do love Nintendo's consoles). I have a PSone and a PS2, but that conference was so damn funny, in the original and edited form. I fell off my chair when Kaz dropped the control and went "whoops!"
