University of Washington plays the most WoW?
According to MapWow, a Google Map API that tracks visitors (not players) to World of Warcraft online, the University of Washington tops the list of "players." We're not sure if that's because all the rain in Seattle or due to the city's proximity to Microsoft and Nintendo headquarters. From the article: "Forget academic or pre-season football rankings, here are the Top 25 Schools ranked according to number of visitors to MapWoW..."

Go UDUB! My alma mater. I think we would have alos topped the Unreal Tournament list back in the day, if there was such a list.
Tykin @ May 26th 2006 3:33PM
Ouch, my school is up there at number 10 (UIUC). Luckily, I haven't played that game in ages.
Brandon Gribin @ May 26th 2006 3:39PM
UW Represent! I've played WoW here, no question, although I'm graduating in a week!
David Chandler @ May 26th 2006 3:39PM
hey hey! My alma mater RIT made number 3... and probably has the highest CONCENTRATION of WOW players given our enrollment of 15,000 students total (less than half of Michigan's 39k and even smaller than UW's 42k.
At least now somebody has heard of us!

Makes sense. I live in the Univeristy District of Seattle and always hear them crazy college kids discussing WoW.
Fat Sony Fanboy @ May 26th 2006 3:47PM
There are more PS2 players than WoW players. Just another victory for Sony.

to the editors: you need to actually 'read' the stories you are linking to. That chart they are showing lists the % of visitors from schools to www.mapwow.com, NOT world of warcraft online.

I think people in Seattle are more tech-savvy in general. Everyone I know out here has a high-speed internet connection, most have wireless routers, and my gaming friends purchase all three consoles.
I don't know what it is...but it's definitely evident.
*Side Note: In the last Presidential Election, the City of Seattle had an over 80% voter turnout and Kerry received over 90% of the vote. We're just smarter. :P
(Don't hate on me, I'm speaking tongue-in-cheek)

Is this US only?
Because I know for a fact that University of Waterloo (in Waterloo, Ontario) is completely overrun with WoW players.
Oh... I see why. It's only counting ".edu" domains. Canadian universities just use ".ca"
Gamer Jay @ May 26th 2006 4:19PM
Ok...that's why the UW football team has been struggling for the past couple of years!
el nico @ May 26th 2006 4:21PM

Champe H @ May 26th 2006 4:31PM
Go BIG TEN!! I'm a UIUC grad...there seems to be a correlation between strong engineering programs and WoW rankings...Go ECE majors!

GTgamer @ May 26th 2006 4:46PM

PatG @ May 26th 2006 5:28PM
As a current RIT student, I can definitely vouch for this. People out here play /way/ too much WoW.
Rooster @ May 26th 2006 5:30PM
Go Blue!
I doubt our football team will do as good this year, but what do I care, I'm an art student.

Go GT! The sad things is I know half of those people are probably going to fail out because of WoW. I saw it happen several times over the years with other games.
SID SPACE @ May 27th 2006 12:34PM
I am at Purdue (#6), but I've never played WoW. I guess I didn't realize how big it was here.
