Behind-the-scenes with Ctrl+Alt+Del's Tim Buckley [update 1]

While we're on the subject, is it just us or does Tim Buckley bear kind of a resemblance to Elliott Smith?
Also be sure to check out Scott Johnson's Diary of a Cartoonist, who has been showing off behind-the-scenes work since early March.

[update 1: Not a tablet PC, got it. Added a link to Scott's behind-the-scenes, and played down the whole Elliott Smith thing ... since that's more or less just me ... I'll get through this, with some help from Johnny Walker Red.]

That's no tablet PC, that's a Wacom Cintiq 21UX Interactive Pen Display!
hokku @ Jun 2nd 2006 8:37PM
Maybe, maaaaaybe, I can see it in the hair.
But seriously, how in the world can you get Elliott Smith from Tim Buckley?
I mean, they're both pretty cool guys and all, but yeah, they definitely weren't seperated at birth.
elvisizer @ Jun 2nd 2006 8:40PM
What Sean D said. Didn't you guys read the penny arcades where gabe talked about tim using a cintiq? or watch any of the youtube videos tim posted about using his cintiq?
Hewie @ Jun 2nd 2006 8:57PM
Are you mad? Elliott Smith? Put that bottle down.
The3rdNuisance @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:13PM
Tim has mentioned the Cyntiq on his blog a few times, but Cyntiq, Tablet PC, close enough, but its freaking huge. It would be a very interesting way to play video games though, it would make a killer aiming system for a side scroller, or a good setup for an RTS.
AwesomeGuy! @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:22PM
Tim has basically compleatly ripped this off from ExtraLifes Scott Johnson's Diary of a Cartoonist.
Ctrl+Alt+Del is a good comic, but Tim Buckley just gives off a big headed vibe from his news posts etc.
Amos @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:30PM
Actually, elvisizer, that was Hawk from Apple Geeks Gabe talked about/linked videos to. I've never seen them mention Tim/CAD before (or vice versa)...
Exo @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:37PM
cyntiq is a bit much for what they draw, and it barely looks like they know how to use PS, look how many damn layers that guy has and he isnt even doen with inking, or drawing the image for that matter.
jakie_chon @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:38PM
scott from myextralife.com is complaining that he did it first and now tim (and kurtz from PvP) has copied him: http://www.myextralife.com/?p=1881
he wants credit for the inspiration. :
tachikoma @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:41PM
jeez, that wacom cintiq that he's using is $3000!!! That's just nuts
Kellan @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:47PM
I'm not seeing the resemblance either, but I'm extremely satisfied that you at Joystiq know of the god that is Elliott Smith. Seriously, I loved you guys before, but you just gained 100000000 cool points.
apoc @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:51PM
yeah, too big for a tablet pc.
He could use the space key to pan in photoshop instead of using the navigator, it's more precise and you don't have to zoom in/out, he's also using the standart view mode wich doesn't allow him to pan the image freely.
Amos @ Jun 2nd 2006 9:53PM
"scott from myextralife.com is complaining that he did it first and now tim (and kurtz from PvP) has copied him: http://www.myextralife.com/?p=1881"
Is that guy serious?! I've never even *heard* of his lame-ass comic. And it's not like it's anything new...the whole watch me draw in super speed with music behind the scenes thing is a pretty old trick.
Nick @ Jun 2nd 2006 11:00PM
I don't know about you guys, but didn't Activision get into nine kinds of garbage for false advertising? If you compare the first trailer unveiled for the CAD animation to what he has on the site right now, you might want to get your money back or ask that he change that trailer. Seriously, that trailer is pretty much up to par with Homestar and a good portion of the stuff available on newgrounds. I didn't mind that people were paying cash for his stuff until now, just for the fact that that trailer up and running is nothing like the first one. It's a sad day when a web comic artist won't be honest to his fans.
Ashe @ Jun 2nd 2006 11:13PM
What the hell are you talking about? You see two clips and suddenly decide that the webcomic author isn't being honest? False advertising?
Please, be MORE overdramatic =P
Zero_ @ Jun 2nd 2006 11:14PM
Holy cow!? A WACOM Cintiq!? That stuff is like $3000 and I think it may be a bit overboard for a webcomic, but as long as it delivers results, that's okay.
"cyntiq is a bit much for what they draw, and it barely looks like they know how to use PS, look how many damn layers that guy has and he isnt even doen with inking, or drawing the image for that matter."
He has 5 layers, 1 one of them is the white background. 1 of them is the black outline. 1 of them is the structure of the body. 1 of them is the basic sketch. 1 of them is the cleaner outlining. I see nothing wrong with that.
Dallas @ Jun 2nd 2006 11:25PM
Meh. I've never really liked Tim Buckley, and that clip didn't help at all. In fact, it made me kind of depressed because people actually pay to watch it.
Mark 2000 @ Jun 2nd 2006 11:35PM
In the immortal words of Dave Attell: "Look at how much effort it takes to bore me!" Good Job Ctrl-Alt-Del. BTW, I animate for a living folks and as cool as a cintiq looks, animators waited a long time to not have to bend over a table till we're in traction. We shouldn't want to go back. Keep your cintiq, I'll stick with my 21" LCD, 6x9 Intous, and good posture.
obo @ Jun 2nd 2006 11:51PM
"While we're on the subject, is it just us or does Tim Buckley bear kind of a resemblance to Elliott Smith?"
Did Buckley stab himself in the heart? Did he?!
No?
Damn it!
frodo @ Jun 3rd 2006 1:36AM
that comic is awful, and he uses a cintiq???? jeebus. what have i been doing with my life...
Ashe @ Jun 3rd 2006 2:40AM
Awfully negative, but I guess nothing more can be expected from a bunch of people who sit around tearing other people's work down, and never accomplish anything of their own.
Wulf @ Jun 3rd 2006 3:03AM
Dont forget that Hawk from applegeeks did two vids similer to this one last month.
The first one is drawing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5yNZ58Z388
And the second is colouring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58_GruOfYo4
enjoy
Nick @ Jun 3rd 2006 3:14AM
@Ashe
Being overamatic? I think not. The guy takes a very well animated trailer and convinces people to spend money on it and then gives them something with quality of that generally found on newgrounds for free. I don't say spend ten cents on a glass of lemonade and then pee in a cup and pretend it never happened. Same concept.
Nick @ Jun 3rd 2006 3:19AM
And considering the whole "False Advertising?" crap is regarding Activision advertising the Call of Duty franchise with full CG replacing in game graphics to entice people into buying a game that looks like that, only to be oh so dissapointed. Tim Buckley is pulling the same thing.
Mitch @ Jun 3rd 2006 3:40AM
Hm, that trailer at the start was actually quite funny, which is odd considering I find the CAD webcomic extremely dry, repetitive and unoriginal. The voice fits Ethan well. I'm still not paying for it, though.
neshill @ Jun 3rd 2006 6:59AM
I should note that, while CAD has some rare jokes which made me laugh, the drawing style is horrible, and has not evolved much from the start. The fact that Tim uses a Cintiq to do that stuff is...sad. When I see a Hawk drawing with one, I respect that. That guy knows his stuff. Tim, on the other hand, draws stuff which is a little more advanced than Megatokyo's Dom comics. He should have saved himself 3K$, used Illustrator to do vector based copy-paste comics, and used those 3K to buy himself shaving foam and a Gilette, and eventually take a girl out to dinner to get to know how it is to actually have a gamer girlfriend. Not some parallel version of him with boobs. If God exists, he would let Scott from VGcats get that Cintiq. That would make a difference.
hjungle @ Jun 3rd 2006 7:16AM
Seems a bit masturbatory and kind of obnoxious with the whole “watch me draw using a really expensive piece of equipment” bit. Perhaps he was parodying how overly serious some web comic artists take themselves. I don’t think so, either, but I could just be bitter over that nice hardware ;)
dkh @ Jun 3rd 2006 10:09AM
Does the video also include a tutorial on how to insult your fanbase, rip them off, or destroy guilds in a fit of immature rage?
Stoli @ Jun 3rd 2006 11:19AM
The guy's not a bad artist, but I loathe his personality. Seems to have a bit of a high and mighty attitude, if you ask me (I'm with you on that last point, dkh).
retromancer @ Jun 3rd 2006 12:44PM
I hate CAD. it's a lame ripoff of PA in theory, but he stopped doing real videogame jokes a while ago. It's become an ongoing saga of his lame characters with video games in the periferary a la Megatokyo, which I also can't stand.
It's still better than PVP though.
kelly @ Jun 3rd 2006 12:54PM
that anyone would pay for "premium" content for any webcomic is quite frankly astonishing. as a whole, they're horrible, Ctrl+Alt+Del included. must be the same people that think Big Momma's House 2 is entertainment.
Injulen @ Jun 4th 2006 5:43PM
I signed up for the CAD Premium the week it was announced. All you who say that the trailer is better animated than the episodes... have you watched all the episodes??? Its all the same animation! And the animation isn't done by Tim, its by Red Ferret. So if you don't like the animation blame them. The jokes are funny, even if you don't think so. Tim is a good artist, and if he wants to spend 3K on a expensive toy to make his work a little easier, thats totally up to him and no one should criticize him for it. Also, I happen to find Tim's personality refreshing. Compared to all the other people on the internet, its good to have someone like Tim to rely on to give me a decent view of what is going on. I'm not saying I agree %100 with everything he says, thats just not right, but most everything he says is at least intelligent and has reason behind it unlike "Tim Buckley Sucks". If he was saying that, he would say "Tim Buckley sucks because ..." et cetera. You people all need to stop thrashing Tim and just go enjoy reading other webcomics if you dislike his so much.

Nick @ Jun 4th 2006 11:45PM
I never had anything against Tim and his now catigorized scam, until I found out he was using false advertising. Yes, his animated series is witty to say the least, yes I have no right to say don't spend money on premium content, and I haven't. The only thing I have said is he has taken full advantage of his fanbase, lied to them and conned them out of money with false advertising. I don't care if you like furries, that's your own business. But when someone lies and steals fomr the people who made it all possible, that is where I draw the line. I hope you enjoy your cartoons, even though he lied to you in the process.
Evil Closet Monkey @ Jun 5th 2006 10:28AM
> While the introductory cartoon is a bit too reminiscent
> of Clerks
It shouldn't be surprising that Tim Buckley takes content and story flow from a motion picture for his animated comic, when he has to take it from other web comics to make his regular comic.
Maybe he'll start exposing himself to under aged girls again to mix things up.
Injulen @ Jun 5th 2006 11:21AM
When did he lie? I've payed for Premium and I would like to know when I was lied to.
Oh, and if your going to say that the animation for the trailer was better than the episodes.. Have any of you watched the episodes other than this little clip?? The animation is the SAME. The trailer is actually the intro to all the episodes. If it WAS false advertising, don't you think he would try to not remind us all of the "better" animation by not using that on EVERY episode? There was no false advertising, all the animation is the same, and any bad animation is the fault of Blind Ferret Entertainment, not Tim Buckley.
Nick @ Jun 6th 2006 12:09AM
Oh, I get it, you are one of the fans of Mr. Timothy who wouldn't know lies if they came up and bit you on the leg. Tim Buckly paid Blind Ferret for that high quality intro. Tim Buckley is responsible for giving Blind Ferret feedback and telling them who to make his cartoons. Tim Tim Buckly is reponsible for all things CAD. If one of his cartoonss doesn't make a deadline, it's his fault for not making it happen. That is how business works. EVERYTHING, good or bad is your fault. And a LOT of people shelled out money based on the quality of teaser he unveiled last year. He never said how crappy in comparison it was to the trailer, and he lied when episode first came out, when the actual comparison between the two was available. Afterthat, he just assumed his fans like being abused and wouldn't mind being cheated. He is pulling the same thing that Activision pulled with the Cally of Duty series. If you want to live in your dream world fantasy that Tim Buckley never lied to you, then fine, I don't care. That doensn't change the fact that he did. And don't bother trying to get another response from me on this article, it has become quite obvious that you won't listen to reason, and I am wasting my time placing the truth before you, only to have it ignored. Good riddance.
Mr. Pickles @ Jul 2nd 2006 5:01AM
I wouldn't pay for CAD premium just to watch the animated series. If it offered other stuff, maybe I'd pay. And he never needed to say how crappy in comparison it was, because the people who payed did so on their own accord. Nobody told them they had to. It might have been worse, whether they knew it or not. And if I paid for premium to watch the animated series, I don't care how horrible the animation is, I watch it for what it delivers in comedy, not how well it's animated. I find the strip funny, even though some of it is repetetive, and Tim sometimes resorts to random crap [arrows coming out of nowhere]. Can you think of something funny, make a strip to tell it, do a rough sketch, finalize that sketch, and put it on your site 4 times a week? If so, good for you, you're a gifted person. But if you can't, shut your mouth and if you don't like it, don't read, watch, or listen. Nobody's forcing you to like it. And Tim does the comic for free, and he still has to work a job. Nobody's forcing you to like it.
