Czechs win 2006 World Cup! (sort of)
Great news, everyone! There's no need to play out any of the World Cup matches, so tell all 32 countries to go home. Electronic Arts has declared the Czech Republic victorious in their 2006 FIFA World Cup simulation. Led by Golden Ball winner Pavel Nedved (also predicted by EA), the defense-oriented Czechs edged out Brazil 2-1 in a hard-fought battle. If you want to see your country's fate, TeamXbox has all of the [unofficial] results. We still have a few days to contact our bookies before the NBA Finals begin. Maybe NBA Live 06 can give us some tips, just like last year.

Congratulations to the Virtual Czech players. And thank you, EA, for letting me know which team to be in the game.
Naveed @ Jun 5th 2006 2:50PM
Damn it, I wanted Iran to win.
Ko?n Untouchables @ Jun 5th 2006 2:55PM
Soccer is the most popular worldwide sport out there, and not basketball, or football can't beat that.
Wolfrain @ Jun 5th 2006 3:04PM
Don't you mean Association Football is the most popular sports in the world nor basketball or American Football can beat that?
By the way just wondering how excited is the ol' US of A over World Cup in Germany?
Kris @ Jun 5th 2006 3:39PM

My 360 is getting a much needed break starting Friday, as I'll be watching every game of the World Cup that I possibly can. I wish that here in the USA we could shut down during the Cup, but alas. So every Monday through Friday I'm dvr-ing the games to come home and watch at night, and then Saturdays and Sundays will be spent at the Pub! Three Lions!!!

What? England losing to Germany? something wrong there.
The New Revelation @ Jun 5th 2006 4:33PM
I think this is just further evidence of how far inferior FIFA is to Winning Eleven. :)
Go England!
sonofnone @ Jun 5th 2006 5:19PM
Hey, if EA is as good at predicting the outcomes of soccer matches as they are at predicting who'll bomb in football each year then I may just have to call my bookie afterall!
J @ Jun 5th 2006 5:22PM
Three lions?
W/O Rooney, impossible.
I hope my Dutch team can finally bring trophy home.
NEway, someone please beat those Brazilians!

I agree with the strength of the Czech Republic team. From their group I expect them to advance along with USA, who due to the fixtures/schedule should be able to make it (Czechs and Italians battling it out in the last match).
I expect one thing for sure: Brazil won't win. I think that Brazil hasn't played against a Top Ten team other than Argentina (in qualifiers) and that defensively they will suffer.
I think that England's gambling an awful lot by waiting for Rooney to recover that I think they might end up making it as runners up in their group, then having to face Germany, who will undoubtedly finish first in their group.
I think England needs to avoid Germany at all costs in the last 16, because Rooney will probably be fit by the 2ndor third match, and he'll need time to be loose enough.
My prediction in Group C is that Serbia will take the group ahead of Argentina, and a younger than usual Holland. Serbia and Montenegro will then go on to eliminate Mexico, who will end up as runners up in their group and face Germany in the quarter finals.
I would really like to see Brazil tested and knocked out early on in the quarter finals, and what better team than the Czechs. The Czechs have the tallest, most technically gifted European side, that unlike Italy, has a very offensive game.
If England make it as first place they'll eventually run in to Argentina, or the much-favored Czechs, who'll have to beat Spain.
All I can say is that the Czechs are going to go far in this WC...

idude,
Brazil will win this world cup! Argentina was no match against Brazil no one is.
jakie_chon @ Jun 5th 2006 11:22PM
where are the full results?
The article talks about a few teams only
idude135: no way S&M (lol) will beat mexico, Mex will probably end up as leaders of the group and then eliminate argentina only to lose to someone else in the next game
jakie_chon @ Jun 5th 2006 11:37PM
oh, and brazil will win the world cup
Alex @ Jun 6th 2006 6:47AM

For those that doubt Rooney, take a look at the frontpage of British "newspaper" The Sun:

Untouchables, as big a Brazil fan as I am, I have to disagree with you.
Argentina are formidable foes for anyone in the world cup. Everyone knows Brazil has sieve-like defence, but offensively they must be feared.
With the likes of Adriano & Ronaldinho up front, play-makers like Kaka in the middle, and R. Carlos in the back (not to mention his unstoppable free kicks) I really do think we (he thinks of himself as Brazilian born & bred every 4 years) can bring it home again this year.
If not then I would like to see Argentina, Japan or Mexico win (Basically any non-european country)
idude135 @ Jun 6th 2006 12:57PM
Jakie_Chon,
If Mexico can beat Iran in the first game, draw Portugal, and have a better goal difference, then they can have first place.
Serbia and Montenegro is the same team that forced Spain into a playoff after finishing first in their group. They are a physical team that has clinical finishing. I doubt that with Mexico's 5'7" average height, they can even score on Serbia. Mexico seldom wins against a European "A" side. No way will Mexico defeat Argentina, not this Argentina with Riquelme and Messi. Mexico crashes out on penalties yet again this summer.
