It's funny how Microsoft and Nintendo fanboys (or just fans) have joined in some kind of unholy alliance to defeat the Sony juggernaut. I think it is refreshing for people to actually admit that they can whole-heartedly enjoy two (or even three... maybe) consoles! I'm still a little weirded out by hearing Zelda and Halo promoted in the same breath, but that's fine with me.

I wonder if, after seeing at E3 that Wii's graphics weren't going to steal away any of their consumers, Microsoft decided that it was a good idea to use some of the raging zealotry of Nintendo fanboys to spread a little 360 love.

I think it is great. The less mud being slung at any given time the better. It looks to me, though, like Nintendo is sipping lemonade while Sony and Microsoft get awfully dirty.

I'd always planned to get an 360 and a PS3 because since the Sega days I always get the the main two consoles. SNES and Genesis, N64 and PS1, PS2 and Xbox. After the N64, I never even consider Nintendo systems anymore, they just seem too "kiddie" for me and I fell old enough. I got a PSP and never considered the DS.

Now with the price point and the likelihood that the PS3 will be equal to but not really better than the 360, the only thing left is the games. I personally hate RPGs and nenver gave a damn about Metal Gear. No one really knows what the exclusives situation will be. Japan aint the whole world and companies may start to take the same approach as Rockstar this gen.

So that means I'm paying $600 just to play Tekken and God of War. Maybe this time I'll just have the one system and play DOA and Too human instead.

I mean seriously $600? "But what about all you get for it blah blah blah" Even if Blu-Ray was gauranteed to win the format war doesn't mean I'd get one this year or next. When I got my DVD player it was year late but it was just the right time because the movies I wanted were out. I'm still high up on a pre-order list and I'll stay there, I'll decide what to get or not get at launch.

@Eric:
I can't say for sure, though my understanding of Render to Texture would be somewhat nullified with the size BluRay presents. You wouldn't have to render your textures on the fly like the 360 does to save disk space. As far as animated/video based textures, the RSX should be able to load these from the main memory. I don't have a kit either so I can't speculate much more than that. And without generated textures, I'm having a hard time trying to place a use for this technology (though I see how it could help a system like the 360 with shared memory.) It's just a difference in architecture really. If the developers maintain their current trend, they will most likely not even use it if it can't easily be ported (given that they are making a multi-platform game.) From what I read about the design though, the RSX is passed textures in a more direct manner freeing up the processor to handle other things.

Another thing about Sony's PS3: if games are going to be released on Blu-Ray discs, be prepared for horrible load times. The 1x BluRay drives read at 36 Mbit/s, the 2x read at 108 Mbit/s. Compare this to the 12x DVD in the XBOX 360, which reads at 126.8Mbit/s.

I voted Wii60. I'm sure Sony will see sales, but no where near the numbers they want and expect. Consumers aren't sheep, and without a compeling reason to spend $600 on the PS3, it's launch is almost guaranteed to fail. When game developers see that gamers don't want the PS3, they'll jump ship and start developing for the 360 and Wii. Anyway you slice it, Sony stands to lose lots of market share to Nintendo and Microsoft - good thing Sony doesn't care about market share!

The only games I'm looking forward to from Sony's camp are MGS4 and Final Fantasy, and those franchises have already appeared on the competitors' consoles. I expect MGS4 and FFXIII to be available on the 360 shortly after their releases on the PS3.

I'm most interested in the Wii, and based on the launch lineup, I expect it to have the best sales at launch this generation. I mean - LoZ and Metroid Prime at launch! With Mario Galaxy and SSBB soon to follow? Fantastic! The 360 needed a better game lineup and units on the shelves, and the PS3 launch is going to be weakened by the price.

As for the poll, the numbers may be off but the overall result is dead on. Just look at other websites' polls: almost all have Nintendo winning by a landslide. So much for Nintendo being the second console of choice; that spot is more reserved for the PS3/360 battle, as nearly 85% of gamers will own the Wii.

I think the reason Sony did so well this gen was because they were universally appealing to both the hardcore AND casual gamer. But it looks like sony could really lose out this gen to both demographics: it seems all but "the hardest of the hardcore" hardcore gamers have shied away from the ps3 already in favor of the Wii60 combo, and which casual gamer do you really think is gonna go out and pay $500 for the CHEAPER version of the PS3, brandname or no? Actually, I can just see the noticeability of sony's brandname being a PLUS for the other systems. A parent goes into wally world come Christmastime and sees the ps3 and wants to buy it for his kid. "Wait, that thing's 600 dollars! Well, what about the xbox thing or that, that white nintendo?" I can see this happening a LOT not only at Christmastime, but also when any casual gamer moseys on to a store to buy a console. If sony had just copied the 360 (as in price and LIVE), then it probably would have proved true that sony's brandname alone would have been almost certain to sell their console. If they had done these things it'd be a whole new ballgame.

"...but they do represent an accurate depiction of what Joystiq readers think"

Um, no, it doesn't... Accurate!? Bwhahahaha! It depicts the opinion of one or two idiot IT workers with whole blocks of IP addresses under their control. It's easy to hack your polls, pollhost is a joke. None of the results can be trusted one little bit. Personally, I have over 5,000 IP addresses at my disposal... I haven't frauded your poll results (yet), but I could - very, very easily with a small shell script.

Duh, anyone can change there IP or shield it with a Proxy, with there been about 1 million proxys open, anyone can do it. I know this poll is messed up too, I saw the PS3 votes go up every 20 seconds.
But it is kind of accurate. Everyone IS talking about the 360+Wii combo on almost every forum i've visited.

"Well done, darryl, you're a mad haxor."

I haven't done anything. I'm not mad, nor am I a hacker. Congratulations, you're smart.

"But it is kind of accurate. Everyone IS talking about the 360+Wii combo on almost every forum i've visited."

I guess you visit different forums, I do not see that trend at all. Wait and see the sales figures... then make educated statements.

You can change your IP quite easily if you have a router, or you can use a Proxy and shield your IP, yes, I do know what I am talking about, you, clearly,
do not.

''I guess you visit different forums''
So you don't visit somethingawful, hardforum, Planet forums, gamespot or IGN? All these forums favor in the Xbox 360 and Wii Combo.

"After the N64, I never even consider Nintendo systems anymore, they just seem too "kiddie" for me and I fell old enough. I got a PSP and never considered the DS."

Not considered the DS because you think Nintendo is kiddie? That's silly. My PSP offers me so little and I especially don't feel non-kiddie for using it. For portable gaming, the DS is really the best option. The PSP finally has a few decent titles, but the DS has a load of good titles. I'm regretting my PSP purchase even though it was half price. I'm hoping I won't get the same lackluster results with the PS3.

"You can change your IP quite easily if you have a router, or you can use a Proxy and shield your IP"

Um, your IP is provided by your ISP. It's true that not all ISP's provide static addresses, but for the most part it's not going to change, especially via your router. Narrowband is different, but I'd hope a router wouldn't be necessary in that case.

To what address? Just changing your IP to something you pull out of your ass will not be routed upstream. Unless you have multiple IPs assigned to your account. Disconnecting and reconnecting to obtain another address is not what I was referring to.

"or you can use a Proxy and shield your IP"

No duh... ya think?

"I do know what I am talking about"

Pfft... Please.

Interesting results from this poll. Somewhat inaccurate in my opinion and a lot of my friends. I have to say we all(my friends and i) agree anyone who purchases a PS3 is a tool but the pre-orders for PS3 are identical to Wii in my friends shop(indie) so lets see the %'s in Oct 2007 to see whats really gonna happen.

What terrible English lol.

Heheheehehheeheheheeh!! GOOD ONE!! *slaps knee*
SO ORIGINAL, TOO! Really.

I'm getting a Wii at launch (Come on Nintendo, bring on the "Variety of Colors"!! I can't wait for a red Wii!), then a 360: when Halo 3 comes out, or when there's a price drop, or when Oblivion goes Players choice. Haven't decided which yet.

People shouldn't be judging Sony's online-thingy before it launches, just because they don't have the experience.
Remember Nintendo didn't either and the Nintendo WiFi is (was? I don't know, the information on that is scarce nowadays) overtaking the Xbox live.

This, by the way is coming from a Nintendo fanboy, but with a clear head.

Steve Randall, I thank you for a good solution, enjoy games on Wii and wait till the winner of the 'powerhouses' has been decided.

My point of view is this:
Sony wants to use PS3 as a Trojan horse to win the HD-DVD/Blue-Ray war. M$ on the other hand supports HD-DVD but is not betting on either. Why buy a PS3 to find out (2 years later) that Blue-Ray is not going to be the default format? I bought an xbox360 and won't buy a HD-DVD until the war is clear. Then M$ might release an additional Blue-Ray drive, if Sony wins, which I may or may not buy.
When I own a HDTV and know which format will dominate I will consider to buy an xbox 360 add-on or a stand alone player.
But XBOX360 and PS3 are all about games and Sony seems to forget it now-days...

@Dominic: It doesn't matter. When the Sony Online service does come out, if it borrows the idea of one of the other services the metephorical will hit the fan again just like the motion controller. Everyone will claim Sony stole it.

@St0nE: I don't know about you, but I never watched a DVD in my PS2 and I don't plan on watching movies in my PS3. So for me, the format war means squat. I think however that a large format drive is required for the upcoming titles. This has been highly debated all over the internet, but it's a simple conflict of ideas on how textures should be compressed, how big the games will be and how much you want to restrict the developer. Most companies will not want to press dual layer DVDs to get above the 4G mark for the price mark alone. Whereas, by that time the sinlge layer Blu-Ray will hold 6 times the data without added cost to produce. If MS held out for the HD-DVD they would argue the same thing. Seeing how the XBox failed horribly, they wanted to get the advantage to market date. Love them or hate them for it, they made a business decision that may (or may not) comeback to hurt them.

@Andir: You correctly state that their is a big debate about compressed or not textures and how big will they be. I think that both graphics cards of PS3 and XBOX 360 support compression of textures. I do believe loading compressed textures and uncompressing them will be much faster than loading a huge uncompressed textures. I have to say here that most of games in XBOX360 and PS3 will be released in multiple formats (PS3/XBOX360/PC). It doesn't make sense to use different techniques in the game to handle resources.
I would really like to hear about a game that will use more than 9GB of data (compressed or not!).

When M$ released their specs (2 years ago), many ppl argued that the size of DVDs was not enough. Bioshock, Gears of War, Halo 3, Oblivion, Forza Motorsport 2 are all games that were not available at lunch time and use more XBOX360 features than games already here. I don't hear the developers complain, as they did 2 years ago! Yesterday I was playing the demo of Lost Planet and My God the detail in textures is awesome!

I give all thumbs up for Microsoft, cause they delivered what gamers want, a PLAYXBOX360 with media features! not a MEDIAPS3 with game features! :)

And whats that about the 1Gbit/sec Ethernet?? :) Most of the world does even have more than 2Mbit/sec internet... and 100/10Mbit/sec Ethernet can handle HD video streams pretty easily! But that's an other topic LOL. :)

@St0nE: "I would really like to hear about a game that will use more than 9GB of data (compressed or not!)."

I really wish I could divulge the name of the game on my hard drive right now...but I'm still bound by the NDA and even releasing it's size may be too much. Here is the raw folder size: 19,600,681,110 bytes (18.2G) It's not a small name game, and details will soon be released. It's a huge game, that's for sure, but the developer had free reign on size and they used it. The textures and landscape are absolutley beautiful and diverse.

Concerning your 1 Gbps network connection here is an article written last year. A quick google on Japanese internet speed pulled it up:
--Today, nearly all Japanese have access to "high-speed" broadband, with an average connection speed 16 times faster than in the United States -- for only about $22 a month. Even faster "ultra-high-speed" broadband, which runs through fiber-optic cable, is scheduled to be available throughout the country for $30 to $40 a month by the end of 2005.--
http://www.foreignaffairs.org/20050501faessay84311/thomas-bleha/down-to-the-wire.html

It's not just about the US. This is where MS failed. I can understand you want to back the XBox as much as you can because you already bought it and don't want to see it fail, so I can see why your fighting so hard for it. The numbers are coming in and the Japanese are still excited about the PS3 even though the price is high for them. All the polls still place it in a good spot. Sony could survive on Japan alone if they had to and plenty of games would come out for it, just as MS could survive on America alone. I think Sony might actually have something though. The PS3 (if it turns out to be what is promised today) will give Microsoft a run for their money and give a step in the door for those that want to develop for Linux as well. This scares MS simply because they have a stranglehold on gaming because of patents on DirectX and it keeps many people from trying other operating systems. Microsoft will pull through all the "hardship" that is coming (Vista's delays, the unsuccess of their predicted takeover of Japan) so don't worry about your purchase. Their is no need to constantly bash the PS3 for whatever reason your trying to achieve. Just don't buy it if you don't want to. Nobody is forcing it on you.
