Heck, why not add the PS1 chipset in there, too! The only way Sony is going to improve their position at the moment is to include the Wii chipset in there, knock $200 off the price and split the controller in two!

I'm sure there are people will queue up to buy the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player but how many games will they buy? Maybe they'll just go to blockbuster and buy some old PS2 games.

I'm NOT a Mickeysoft fan but I think their method of re-compiling the main game component works better - coz you use the power of the new machine on the older game (better frame rates and anti-aliasing etc).

wouldnt it be cheaper to just package it WITH a ps2 rather than trying to cram it all in one box?

Unless my memory is overtly clouded, wasn't the method Sony used to guarantee backwards compatability between PS2 and PS1 was to include the PS1 main processor in the PS2 as the I/O processor. Perhaps it was a rumour. I forget.
I don't see why Emultion "isn't an option". I thought given that Cell was an OS-neutral processor, it would have made things ok?

Because many developers did not follow the standard TRC (Technical Requirement Checklist) many games cannot be emulated correctly. Not Sony's fault, but the developers who cut corners.

Anyway I would love a 2-in-1 system, I think it would be awesome...just as long as the price doesn't go up any further.

As for emulation making games better...yeah by like 5%, barely noticable...

I believe this is the same strategy Nintendo has always used with their handelds. The GBA had a GBC inside it, the DS has a GBA inside it. The Micro doesn't have a GBC inside it. Chalk up another Sony ripoff.

@ TheGuyNextDoor
No your memory isn't clouded at all. The I/O chip inside a PlayStation 2 is indeed the good old MIPS R3000A PlayStation CPU.

@ Nik
Why invent the wheel all over again? Or break it, like Microsoft did with the backwards compatible on the Xbox360?

yes, i will enjoy being able to play 99.9% of my ps2 games on my ps3 without having to worry about compatability or wasting HD space for patches that may or may not exist. hey, maybe they'll find a good sub use for the emotion chip to do (maybe monitor and manage my stocks for high gains or feed my cat. $600 is chump change bad for a console that can replace a stock broker and keep fluffy alive while i power level weapons in the next ratchet and clank.)

for me it's a matter of conveince and space. i only have so many slots for input behind my tv (only one hdmi and two componet and one standard/svideo) and i don't need to have the redundancy in consoles. i need one componet to go to my digital cable, the hdmi to go to my ps3 and the other componet to go to my second console (i'm thinking wii) while i keep my camcorder line always pluged in to the s-vid because climbing behind a 36" crt hdtv to shift cables around is not fun. i like playing my older games and lookforward to playing my ps2 and ps1 games on ps3. when i played FF9 i did so on my ps2 in 2003, from time to time i still throw in wipeout XL.(best game soundtrack ever!) i recently purchased GT4 and if i were to buy a ps3 today it's reassuring to know i can replace the old box on my entertainment center without making my tried and true last gen software obsolete or inconvient to use.
i can put the old ps2 in the bedroom so the wify can play katamari and everybodys happy. i realise i'm just one person that may feel this way but it's important to me. it sends the message that the ps2 is still relevent. unlike the 360 where MS seems to have taken steps to push people away from the original xbox and taken a "under promised" and "over achieved" update patch approch.

sorry? but did you say Sony ripped of Nintendo (for this)?!?

you say it was the GBA that "inlcuded" the GBC... and so, WHEN did the GBA came out? 2001.

the PS2 included the PS main proc as an I/O proc... and when did the PS2 come out? hum? 2000. omg, one year earlier... sony must have a "future-predicting machine" to steal from Nintendo... since the PS2 pretty much announced the inclusion of the PS from the early pre-launch white papers.

so if they decide to put the PS2 "in" the PS3... you can't say they "STOLE" this one.

so please... STFU already. this crap has to stop.

What has to stop is people getting so damn upset about everything said. Goobers, you are right, sony had the idea first, but who really cares if he was wrong? Does the fact that he said that really effect your life? Come on everyone and bring it down a notch. It is really annoying for those of us that want to have an intelligent discussion (and even debate with other fanboys).

I am sorry if it seems like I am picking on you but this is the straw that broke this camels back.

If this is happening because they will achieve BC through software later on, then I would expect a very small PS3 in the future (but a future that is not as distant as the end of its lifespan). Small because they would take off the PS2 chipset, and because they would shrink everything related to PS3. I'd like to think it will be as small as the original PS2 in the future.

" It is really annoying for those of us that want to have an intelligent discussion (and even debate with other fanboys)."

i'm sorry... but how is that possible?

time and time again, "fanboys" (on BOTH sides) have gone on to topic after topic... treating their opinions as FACT... rumors (even DEBUNKED rumors) as fact... and as for the actual facts? they are either conviently forgotten, or actually don't exist (as in performance comparision of consoles that aren't even available!).

when you "correct" them, they ignore you... and granted, that "STFU" part was over the top... but then I get responses such as yours aimed at me. you've got to be kidding!

"straw that broke the camel's back"

uh huh... that back broke LONG AGO.

and yes, it DOES matter if it is "right"... because there will be people coming here, LOOKING for information, reading whatever maybe posted... and taking mis-information as fact...

i would've applauded you if you had "aimed" this at the fanboys in other posts where they were all over the place... but since you decided to "target" me (for lack of a better word)... blah.
