Until Microsoft unveils
its (rumored) contribution to mobile gaming, we'll have to settle for its (much bigger) daddy.
Dave over at portablesystems.net has posted a bunch of photos from his portable Xbox hack which features a decent sized LCD, battery power and a surprisingly authentic green paint job. You've got to marvel at the effort that must have gone into this project, although you'll excuse us for being equally excited at the prospect of seeing the Xman's offspring.

How are you suppose to hold that thing and play?
Sabre @ Jun 6th 2006 8:11PM
Holy christ! lol
Yea how do you hold that thing? It looks massive!
Jouten Za @ Jun 6th 2006 8:26PM
"Yea how do you hold that thing? It looks massive!"
Sabre
I would guess you hold it like a laptop, or maybe like you were reading a big book on your lap, leaning over it to play?

Hahahahaha lmfao. Good ones guys.
KineticOnline @ Jun 6th 2006 8:34PM
Now that is a console you would crouch to play. lol I can just imagine it sitting on my knees (buttons furthest away) with me staring down at the screen, franticly trying to mangle the buttons in a doa3
KilgoreTrout XL @ Jun 6th 2006 8:41PM
Hey, when it comes to boxes you're supposed to play with, bigger isn't always better.
(Innuendo aside, nicely done.)
Cage @ Jun 6th 2006 8:43PM
Just having the screen on there and being able to play upright would be sweet. I dont know about a controller on there though...
Sabre @ Jun 6th 2006 8:46PM
haha...and I didn't even mean my post to be an inuendo. lol
Talbot @ Jun 6th 2006 8:46PM
Wow, it's almost as big as the original Xbox controller.
Crazylink @ Jun 6th 2006 9:12PM
Portable Xbox is hueg.
Pixelbox @ Jun 6th 2006 9:17PM
That's so awesome. I gotta learn that vacuum forming technique. Can you imagine forming out a nice little case for a gamepad and one of those new ultra-mobile PCs? It would be the ultimate in portable emulation.
Sigh... better finish my other projects first.
apoc06 @ Jun 6th 2006 9:46PM
great mod, i just wish he fixed the gamepad layout. why did he keep the same layout as the controller S? on a box that big those buttons would be even harder to reach.
Tom @ Jun 6th 2006 9:46PM
I think there should be a limit to calling something portable lol. There is no way you could hold that thing for any length of time and play it. You could only play it by resting it on something. Especially since for some reason the controllers (so where you have to hold it obviously to play) are at the top meaning it would feel much heavier to hold than if in the middle.
I mean its impressive but if you are going to spend time doing this surely it would be a good idea to put as much effort in the design as possible O.o
embassy @ Jun 6th 2006 10:21PM
Well honestly we have no visual sense of scale...theres nothing to compare it to...i wish he wudve taken shots of him holding it so we cud get a general idea of the size of this beast...

anyone know how durable that styrene plastic is once it's painted? That vacuum-forming technique seems pretty cool for a portable, but only if your final product can withstand the abuse that portables get.
Driveby @ Jun 7th 2006 1:28AM
You do have something to measure it to...look at the skittle colored buttons ahah..
any how that thing looks to be a good 25 pounds
Iwata Miyamoto @ Jun 7th 2006 7:44AM
I think it would be better if he put the controls near the bottom area, then it probably be easier to use since the controls put you way off the screen and make it harder to use.
n8dogg @ Jun 7th 2006 9:45AM
Actually, no. Putting the buttons on the top means that you can support the rest of the system with your palms, making it much easier to play.
It might feel awkward at first, but I can imagine getting used to that set-up.
Blurb @ Jun 7th 2006 9:50AM
Forum go hack? And yes, that thing looks awfully uncomfortable to use.
Gonzo @ Jun 7th 2006 10:13AM
Portable?
That thing's about as portable as a DS glued to a psp.
Frost Byte @ Jun 7th 2006 10:23AM
Wow for such a big device that is a tiny Screen come on if your gonna make a HUGE hand err lapheld you could've at lest made the screen a little bigger eh?
Iwata Miyamoto @ Jun 7th 2006 11:00AM
"Actually, no. Putting the buttons on the top means that you can support the rest of the system with your palms, making it much easier to play."
There's nothing wrong with putting down on your lap and playing off the screen face down. Holding it up would be pain, since its bulky and not to mention alittle tiring to hold after awhile plus the screen is in a very awkward position playing from the top.
Pedro @ Jun 7th 2006 11:24AM
That's actually an MS prototype, but it's missing the power brick which you strap to your back or waist.
ethan @ Jun 7th 2006 11:38AM
and then the car battery you sling over your shoulder to power it for 20 minutes. ;)
Lionel @ Jun 7th 2006 1:02PM
It looks about the right size.
your name here @ Jun 7th 2006 5:39PM
it looks cool but you need a tripod to actually play it
