First off, we'd like to thank Dueling Analogs for using us in a comic this week -- we're touched (in ways we can't exactly discuss on public forum). Since Extra Life already got its due this week, check out our picks for best game-related webcomics this week, and be sure to vote for your favorite:
Most were pretty weak this time. I really liked press start to play and concerned though. However, when it comes down to a tie, concerned's lack of solid art kills it for me and it's gotta go to press start.
Though dueling analog's one with joystiq in it certainly had a funny list :).
Why didnt you guys use my comics this week? this weeks line up is kinda weak and i know that i could have brightened things up dispite last week. i posted four good ones this week , two of which could have been used for the wrap up:
you guys must have forgotten about me already. its okay, it happens. Just try to keep this underdog in mind next week and so on. until then ill try to come up with some more gold.
Press Start to Play is the pick of the week, I'd say.
It sometimes makes you wonder what happens to the numerous, nameless grunts you kill in video games, even the cartoon-y ones like Mario.
What if that Koopa Troopa or that Metool or the Kremling you just stomped had friends and families? Sure, you're the hero, and you gotta stop their evil boss... But why must they pay for it?
YOU NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE GOOMBA'S FEELINGS, DID YOU!? YOU JERK.
I went Concerned. The Press Start to play joke has been done before. The whole horse eater joke was in Metal Gear Solid 3 so no points for stealing your jokes. Retinas and Mario killing Luigi lacked a decent punchline. Foxtrot was enjoyable, but concerned is the only one that stood out of the given choices as exceptionally good.
its because the week before lasts comics havent been really game related. the naughty knobs one was somehow overlooked, and that was after a story arc. this week, I dont know what to tell you. they had two gaming strips up. but i have no problem with this.
I'd like to see the pros and the rookies seperated to give the pros credit where credit is due, and give the noobs a chance to shine as well. how are the new guys gonna compete with a fanbase like penny arcade?
maybe im saying that because i run a webcomic, but it really would even things out and make things better i think.
Separating newer webcomics from older webcomics sounds good in theory, but doing that would defeat the purpose of this being a weekly webcomic wrapup.
But for sake of discussion, let's say you got a chance to separate them... how would you? Penny Arcade and PvP are both eight years old, so they would go to the older category. But what about Press Start to Play and Dueling Analogs, both those comics are only seven months... they would be grouped with the newer strips? Why? They seem to be holding their own fine... hell, Press Start to Play is currently winning.
Let's be happy that Joystiq.com chooses to include less known webcomics in the voting at all. In theory this could be a weekly match up between Penny Arcade, VG Cats, Ctrl+Alt+Del, PvP, Little Gamers and ExtraLife if they wanted it to be... they just chose to make it more diverse.
Er, just asking here, where does Joystiq find the comics in its selection. I have a game related comic. I'm not saying it could win one of these things, but you can understand why I'm curious.
At first, it was reccomendations/word of mouth, and then from links on those web sites, and lastly from people who leave comments on here, such as yourself. There is no master list (although, admittedly, there should be -- an ever-expanding list of game-related webcomics that I can run through every week so I make sure I don't miss any).
And I've been mulling over the issue of newer vs. more respected webcomics on the list,a nd I'm siding with pierski ... quality holds no popularity. If the comic is good, I'm going to put it on the list, regardless of its popularity. I'll probably start listing "honorable mentions" for webcomics that didn't make the list but just started out and could use some recognition, but the only factor for ending up on the poll -- and it's a silly poll that means very little -- is our personal opinion of the quality of the strip.
And anyone who says we always ignore Penny Arcade has a very, very, short memory -- and hopefully are not the same people who yelled at us a few weeks back for always including PA.
Ross Miller, while I'm not sure if the following site would be the easiest to sift through, it does feature practically every web-comic -- game related or not -- into one list. And you can sort the comics by genre, gaming being one of them. Just follow the link below to check it out.
Is this where we can submit our suggestions? I thought that 1up.com's Friday comic was pretty good, http://crazybuffet45.1up.com
You know when you get to the third panel of any of Gurewich's Perry Bible Fellowship, and you laugh a little, and then you look back at panel two and laugh even harder? 1up was totally channeling Gurewich on Friday.
PStP and Dueling Analogs were good this week, but Concerned clearly takes the prize. The punchline at the end is priceless, and applies to every game with a companion NPC. I'm not sure where they study how to get in your way and jump in front of bullets for no good reason, but they really need a new NPC academy.

dueling analogs wins it for me. Luigi's excitement and Mario's kickassness work well for a humorous, if not laugh out loud, strip.

Is far funnier.

PSTP is pretty funny when those two girls arent in it?
Why the hell are they there? Just to make those two guys not seem gay?
Mark D. @ Jun 10th 2006 5:10PM
The Digital Unrest one is just stealing the punchline from some blog that I remember reading. It talked about how the DS Lite will burn your retinas.
PStP was definitely the winner this week.

Best game comic I've seen all week was "The Day it Snowed"
http://www.thedayitsnowed.com/index.php?p=303
You have to know a little bit about quantum physics to get it, but if you do it is easily the best gaming joke I've heard all year.

So why isn't Penny Arcade ever in the running? Did I miss something?

Scott...please, please fix your spelling. Your comic is good, except for the fact that you constantly mispell "your" and "their".
B_Bob @ Jun 11th 2006 1:19AM
With the exception of FoxTrot I think we've got a spectacular round up this week :-)
Linkman2004 @ Jun 11th 2006 2:59AM
It was a rather good lineup this week, and, no, I didn't vote for my own comic. :P I voted for PSTP.
I think Scott is on to something, though. It would give more people a chance if they seperated it into big web-comics and rooky web-comics.
