Wiimote versus Revmote: more junk in the trunk

Destructoid made some adorable graphics comparing the prototype Revmote with the new, and improved, Wiimote. Most notable: those kicking new curves. Sure, there's a little more junk in the Wiimote's trunk, but that's sexy, right? Underneath that small amount of bulk, we've got new features like a speaker, dongle-grabbers (laugh it up), and some new button names. Alright, the button names probably don't add much bulk, but I think most of Joystiq would agree that the Wiimote we held at E3 was awfully comfortable.
Who's gonna be the first one to make a new papercraft to go along with the new Wiimote? My old one has suddenly started to reek of obsolescence.

LOL, damn, that Sir Mix-a-lot reference was hilarious.
Give yourself a star on that one, C. Grant. Damn good stuff.

Black beans? Should be red beans.
Red beans and rice is the Southern dish that Mix-a-lot was referring to. Black beans and rice is a Cuban and Nicaraguan dish.
*sparkles* THE MORE YOU KNOW

Just like a confused teenage girl going through middle school, except this time i'll actually be able to press "her" buttons

Obo:
It's sad that the first thing we both thought to comment on was that the Sir Mix-A-Lot lyrics were wrong.
Especially in light of the fact that he sold out and started performing a version of the song for Target that includes the line, "I like backpacks and I cannot lie."

Alkaiser: You must've missed it when he tried to resurrect his career... with the Presidents of the United States.
But yeah, where did they even get _black_ beans and rice, yeesh.

The Rev Power button looks better.Oh well I can't wait to have some girls come over and get their hands on my wii.

What we need is a nunchaku cutout now and a system cutout. We need it to accompany your paper one.

Maybe those "dongle-grabbers" double function to also more adequately connect the wiimote to a power stand...
Big Ed @ Jun 15th 2006 8:08PM
This is auctually an improvement with the added length and bulk. I always thought the revmote was going to be too small.

Grindstone: direct all praise to the rascally guys at Destructoid; in this dance we call blogging, I was following their lead.

The three things I would like to see go back would be the power button, the player indicators, and the bottom connector. The longer player indicators are the most important though, the rectangular ones just plain look cooler than this square nonsense.

I actually think the Revolution remote looks a lot better than the Wiimote. Particularily the power button and the middle buttons (start, select, home).
The B trigger button and the nun-chaku adapter do look better though.
BPM? @ Jun 15th 2006 10:08PM
I do miss the naming of the buttons Stalt and Serect... erm... START and SELECT...
But other than that, I like the Wii design more.

Papercraft?
Bah, old school stuff. You need to make it out of something a little more DURABLE!

I sincerely hope they don't redesign the controller again, because that would mean I'd have to make 5 more for myself and each of my friends. Just one takes up about 2-3 hours at work.
The material is foamcore and it's just held together by masking tape. The buttons are all held down by incredibly sticky double-sided tape and were cut by hand (no circular cutter here).
Probably the only benefit to working where I do is that I have the time and the material to do this.

One other thing I really like about the new design of the remote is the loop to attach a wriststrap to (I think they were used at E³...). Does away with the fears of accidently flicking your Wiimote at the TV, huh?
MegaMatt @ Jun 16th 2006 1:56AM
Is it too early to be comparing? We still haven't seen the final Wii controller yet, right?
Zak @ Jun 16th 2006 2:31AM
Well I guess gerth really does matter...

Nothing wrong with comparing one prototype to another (maybe it isn't? Who knows?)
Just showing the continued evolution of Revolution.
(Ahahahaha, it rhymes! Okay, I'll shut up now.)

I like the "wiimote" because of the fatter bottom, I was worried something that skinny would be akward in my hands, like a nes controller.
Joshi @ Jun 16th 2006 1:29PM
I also prefer the original Start/Select/Home buttons. The new +/-/[little house icon] just looks cluttered. A button with a picture of a house?!?
I also definitely prefered the "a" and "b" buttons, not "1" and "2." I love the connection that created with the NES - the Wiimote has only a d-pad and an A and B button, and it's still the most revolutionary pad since the NES! I guess I can see how some people might get confused between "A" and "B" and "a" and "b," but the lowercase buttons would probably mirror the functions of the uppercase buttons, anyway - you can't really use both sets of buttons at the same time.
I like the new B button, but I can't help but think that a lot of the simplicity of the original Revmote is gone. The new Wiimote looks more cluttered.

Dear C. Grant:
I respect your honesty and forthcoming nature with regards to this post. However, I must retract my comment about you deserving a star based on the above cited testimony. Therefore, without prejudice, I dismiss my earlier accolades.
Better luck next time.
