Tomb Raider remake for PSP canceled [update 1]
According to an announcement on Core Design's web site, the PSP update of Lara Croft's first adventure has been scrapped. The official word: "The video of Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition that appeared on certain sites was an unauthorised release of an internal presentation of a game that was being developed by Core Design until very recently. It was running on PSP and used a Core-developed engine. However, following a recent review this project has been officially cancelled by SCi."
Core's staff and assets were recently acquired by Rebellion Developments (AvP, Rogue Trooper), although SCi still maintains the Core brand name.
Update: Eurogamer is now reporting that the remake isn't canceled. Apparently, SCi has just issued a new statement saying the project is back on. PSP owners now have Lara's original adventure, as well as this month's Legend to look forward to.

flyNN @ Jun 16th 2006 11:50AM
That sux. Tomb Raider was the only game I liked on my NGage and was looking forward to it on PSP :(
flyNN @ Jun 16th 2006 11:51AM
Oh. Legend will be cool. d'oh.
Peter Lou @ Jun 16th 2006 11:51AM
This sux, i saw the video and it looked plenty gr8. It would've been a fine addition to the PSP library. Not many people want ports for PSP
_Mike @ Jun 16th 2006 11:53AM
Er, the article this links to says almost the exact opposite, and that it isn't canceled at all.
jabbertrack @ Jun 16th 2006 11:54AM
hello...? anyone out there?
the PSP needs more decent games
I'm starting to feel horribly abandoned... much like how I felt with my Atari Lynx :(
Ah well... at least I picked up a DS lite
lyam @ Jun 16th 2006 11:56AM
not cancelled!
Chris @ Jun 16th 2006 11:57AM
The trailer looked really impressive graphically, its a shame that all that good work went to waste. Though it was probably canned for a good reason. We don't want another Angel of Darkness on our hands after the successful revival of the Tomb Raider franchise.

The game isn't cancelled. Did Joystiq not read the article? I mean being anti-Sony is ok, but at least posting true stories would be nice!

Hey guys, this is a BLOG. Not a NEWS SITE. Do you really expect someone to do something as simple as read an article. For shame. By definition a blog means sloppy work that no one bothers to check or edit.

Euro gamer is also reporting that SCI-Eidos says the 10 Aninversary edition of Tomb will appear on PC and PS2 as well as the PSP.

"Core's staff and assets were recently acquired by Rebellion Developments (AvP, Rogue Trooper)"
AvP as in that RTS game that wasn't that great? We should punch them to get AvP3 (the PC FPS) in the works.

Good one VF, you really got us there. Turns out we read an article titled "TR remake not cancelled!" and somehow took it to mean that it was cancelled. Sheesh. Another slice of humble pie, please!
The more likely explanation is that Eurogamer updated their story, as Alan has reflected. Thanks for the troll though, always appreciated.

They didn't cancel it? Then it is a waste of time. They should have stopped while they were ahead and focused more attention to making it for the DS.
Making a TR game for the PSP is a complete utter waste of time AND money.
Felix Andrews @ Jun 16th 2006 1:47PM
In its original form and even with slight enhancements, Tomb Raider could easily be done on DS. Where's the love, people?
BPM? @ Jun 16th 2006 1:55PM
How do you figure that, Jouten Za?
I'm sure they can find more people with PSP that will buy it because of "OMG big b00bi3z" than they would on DS.
(I kid, I kid... ;P)

Hey guys, within 20 minutes after our original post went live, Eurogamer updated the referenced link with the new story. Sometimes things happen that way, but we do our best to keep every post updated with accurate info. Thanks for reading!
Cheers,

Anyone sick of this game yet?
lyam @ Jun 16th 2006 2:21PM
DSers bash the PSP for it's 'ports' and now they are demanding a port of Tomb Raider.
`_`
Fanboys are ridiculous no matter what color they wear.
Jouten Za @ Jun 16th 2006 2:50PM
Iyam,
I didn't see anyone 'demanding' a port for this game. Personally, I was just making a statement that if they are going to put any effort into making this game for a portable, they should do it for the DS since it is the most sensible platform with the touch screen, mic, etc. I think this game would not be 'just another port' for the DS. I believe that the TR developers would have a blast making this game on that platform.
So before you go announcing to cyberworld your perceptions of what people think, make sure you either quote them or use their statement verbatim.
Thank you, have a nice day.

Re: #13
I withdraw my statement.

Jamesology @ Jun 17th 2006 2:41PM
I don't understand what both sides of the fanboys are talking about... both DS and PSP has games that have been ported from their bigger brother. I have both the DS Lite and PSP and I love these ports. Plus if these game ports are soo bad then go ahead and carry your PS2 and GC to school, work, and shopping with your GF; in my opinion you will look stupid carrying a big ass system with you on the go.
I personally carry my PSP more since it plays music, movies and games all in one. But I bring my DSL when I am just travelling far since the DS has better games. And remember this is just ME not you fanboys.
Jamesology @ Jun 17th 2006 2:50PM
Also to #6:
PSP does have a lot of good games, you obviously don't have a PSP. Just like a typical DS fanboy trying to disguise your self as "once a PSP owner and abandoning it." PSP did have a lot of bad games but so did the DS, seriously .. NINTENDOGS??!?... who actually still plays with that? I honestly did think it was cool for the FIRST WEEK!! Then I realized how stupid it is taking a video game dog. But then they made up for it by remaking a port of Mario. NO DOUBT MARIO WILL ALWAYS ROCK!!
