Black DS Lite's flesh compared to PSP, DS Phat

Spudstercool, the tipster that sent us shots of the black DS Lite yesterday, was busy last night taking a few more photos of his black DS Lite alongside his PSP and now discarded DS Phat. This thing is hawt.

Some answers to questions in the earlier comments thread:

The DS Phat goes for around £70 on eBay.co.uk although GAME stores will give you £40 towards a DS Lite if you give them your DS Phat.
The North American release date for the black DS Lite is, as yet, unannounced.
You can import a U.K. DS Lite to your country without worrying about region encoding for games, but you'll still need to figure out a way of converting the UK DS Lite's 3-pin 230V/50Hz power adapter to your local mains power.

Alternatively, you could just buy a US version of the DS Lite mains adapter. As the internal gubbins of the DS Lite itself are identical, this is the easiest solution, and probably a damn sight easier than buying a step-up converter.

Just have some pity on me: I've spent the last week or so accumulating parts to build a UK mains adapter for my newly purchased Virtual Boy. Absolute nightmare, that was.

... or just buy a new power adaptor from your own region. The input to the DS is the same in all regions, its just the plug thats different.

I traded in my Game Boy Micro at Chips for £37, which I didn't think was too bad. Not sure how much the bigger stores are offering for them.

I think the black one looks awful, id much rather have a sky blue. I pre ordered mine with 3 games, Animal Crossing, Mario and Luigi 2 and Sonic Rush which I cant wait to play, I only owned 3 games in my entire lifespan of original DS, not enough good original games imo.

You can just buy a US power adaptor from Nintendo for $10 or use the forementioned USB method to charge (Wall plug will charge faster)

definately better than the "phat" ds, but in that pic the PSP's sexy screen definately steals the show

I have to agree with a few others, the black DSlite is not to sexy...Id rather buy the white one. i do like the picture posted, poor DSphat...

How are people in the UK getting hold of these? They aren't meant to be released until the 23rd! (I want one so badly it hurts. It hurts my SOUL)

Why does it seem that almost every other post here is about the DS? I know that the DS is the new "in" gadget in the gaming world, but you guys seem to post everything about the DS. When there is actual news on other systems however (such as the PSP's new firmware) you guys don't seem to post it. I appreciate you guys offering such in depth coverage on the DS, but I would love to see Joystiq do the same for all systems.

I just made a last minute reservation to make sure I get my black DS Lite. ^^ The salesman told that they start selling them here in Finland on thursday which is 22nd day. He also said that the price will be 159 or 169 euros which is about 200-210 american dollars. I heard the price in US is a lot lower so I wouldn't mind getting the white one for a lower price... Well, I'm sure it'll be worth every euro I spend anyway. :)

you don't need a step up converter!

I bought a UK sony ipod killer and the walladaptor had the UK plug on it and I solder directly a normal plug on it. The adapter can be run on 120/240V

input ac100-240V
50-60Hz

It does make a buzzing sound because in the UK it is 50hz.

It works and I think you could do the same with the DS lite!

Anand, the PSP firmware release isn't news because it happens somewhere in the neighborhood of every seventeen minutes.

It looks like cheap, dull plastic. The PSP still looks way better.

Kidding aside, I am not a fanboy or anything (I own a DS and PSP and pretty much every game console released recently besides the Xbox 360), but I think it is a bit obvious that Joystiq.com focuses on Nintendo a lot more then the rest. I guess the entire gaming media does that now though so it is not really Joystiq's fault. I just wish they covered all news evenly.

Does anyone else have a problem with the DS Lite buttons being too small? I don't know if the DS has the same size buttons. I tried playing Super Mario on it at Best Buy and it was just awkward.

I own a DS, and not a PSP, but have to admit the PSP is still better looking.

...Why is it everytime I look at Joystiq I get another news story about some needle #$&% taking pictures of his DS Lite. I understand that the thing is slimmer than the old model and that it has a brighter screen. The name DS Lite sort of implies all of that, dont you think?
Everytime some chowderhead takes pictures of this thing does it need to make the news? You know what, I dont think anyone cares how big your toy is.

WE'VE SEEN IT! We all freaking own one! We all know how bright the screen is! You would think it was the most amazing thing since the wheel with all these news stories on it! It's a smaller DS shaped like an iPod with the gloss of a psp. whoo hoo. NEXT STORY!

@Don Rickles: The black DS Lites shipped to Europe are the first ones. A guy at a retail store managed to get one home and take pictures of it. Since the two favorite DS Lite colors are probably white and black, posting pictures of the new, sexy (yeah, I did that just to annoy you) black DS Lite is newsworthy, especially when you consider that this is a gaming blog. Not everything on here has to be breaking news.

I STILL don't understand why Nintendo plays Color Wars with themselves. Why not release ALL the colors on the same day and let us choose? The whole idea of releasing one color and then waiting and releasing another color is ridiculous!! Give us ALL of the choices on the same day and let us decide. I think they actually HURT sales the way they do it because people don't run out and buy it immediately thinking that in 3 months they can buy the red or the blue one. So they wait...

Although I agree with the gist of what you said, I gotta say it wouldn't REALLY hurt the sales since there are always gonna be a lot of people who can't wait and get the white one first (assuming you're in the North America Region). I for one got a white one just recently because I wasn't about to wait for an unknown period of time. My friends I know wanted more colours, but after I've shown them the full glory of what the DS lite has to offer (regardless of colours) they decided they were way too desperate to wait for the black one. Now five of us have the white DS lite and are playing Mario Kart DS together. It's MAD fun.

The DS looks like a cheap knockoff compared to the PSP. I hope looks aren't everything.

The PSP looks way sexier... The matte black finish of the DS makes it look cheap - which I guess it is. The PSP sceeen also looks much more vibrant.

Yeah, from the photo. Look at the angle of which the picture was taken. Click on the link and check the picture out behind that one where the angle is actually accurate. They are very close in brightness. The DS is slightly brighter but not as much as everybody says it is. I own both and compared and they are very close. The DS just has a better battery life but that's cuz it's not near as complex.

I don't know if the Lite's buttons are smaller, but after pawing at a demo model in Circuit City for a few minutes, it seems to me as though the buttons are mushier than my beloved DS Phat's. Like maybe there's more travel to them or something. I don't think I'll upgrade.

I never thought the PSP was very sexy. I'd rather gawk at a black iPod or the new black DS Lite. I so wish I had a Lite, they look soooooooo amazing.

Yeah the black DS Lite looks CHEAP, my white one looks WAY better. It matches my white PSP. I LOVE GAMES, can't get enough of it!!!

Wait, if you have a 110/120v charger for ds lite, can you use it to charge the European Black DS Lite? or are the chargers non-interchangable?

Sam, if you don't even own a DS, then why do you even bother giving your response. Plus Ipods are for girls and Gay ppl. Heck even the PSP last longer playing music, games, and movies. Don't hate on the PSP just b/c you can't afford it. Actually you can't even afford the DS Lite. The DSL white, like the one in my hands, is better looking than the black, just like the majority agrees. :)

I have to say the white ds lite looked much nicer, the black one looks hideously revolting.

actually after looking at the pics, i thought the ds lite was smaller than it is, but it isn't much smaller than the original ds.

I saw the DS Lite ( Black & White versions) displayed side by side with PSP (both colours)in Currys Digital. These pictures don't do the DS justice. In the Flesh DS lite is definitely more classy than PSP. The white PSP looks 2nd best when viewed side by side with DS lite & the Black DS lite is the sexiest gaming handheld ever
