I've read that the Doom3 engine is easier to work with in terms of development. So why have I only heard of Quake 4 (does that count?) and Prey using it, while the Source engine seems to be being used all over the place?

Is it the Havok physics engine in source? I thought the Doom3 physics was "pluggable" anyway?

@Max Howell

I think Dark Messiah is using a version of the Source Engine, ie: Half-Life 2's engine.

Engine schmengine...a good game is a good game, regardless of the tech. Who cares if its the Doom3 engine or thomas the tank engine, what's important is a good story, and for it to not descend into a massive fps fragfest, because then it wouldnt be anything special.

Dan: I must disagree somewhat. Imagine how much better Oblivion would be if it would run on mere mortal hardware...the engine the last few Elder Scrolls games have been based on are VERY inefficient. Oblivion does not look significantly better than Half-Life 2, yet came out 2 years later and requires triple the hardware to run at the same framerate. The source engine is, in my experience, very efficient: it runs great on my laptop, and I'm looking forward to Dark Messiah.

As someone who's played and beaten both HL2 and Doom3, not only is HL2 a vastly superior game in terms of variety/story line (seriously, how many times can you have an imp pop out behind you before it just gets old?), but the engine is MUCH better.

I think the reason why more game use Source is they're looking to make the coolest game they can. Just say the word Source to me and I have my wallet halfway out. Doom3's engine just doesn't do that for anyone.
