I imagine there's a good chance that they'll replace Falco with a different Star Fox character. Star Wolf or Krystal seem like the most likely candidates, and if you consider that Smash Bros Melee got a lot of mileage out of "clones" consider this:

Krystal and Jade would more than likely share a similar mechanic, since both would fight with staffs. The fact that Beyond Good and Evil was such a critical darling paired with the SSB creator's comment about supporting some lesser-known characters seems to make Jade/Krystal likely candidates for adoption into the series. Both would be new characters, the staff-fighting mechanic fits very well with Smash Bros gameplay, Jade makes the group a bit more well rounded on the strong but not sexuallized female side (and I guess Krystal does too, but not as much as Jade).

These facts make the two a very good pair for Smash, and one I think a lot of fans would support. There's a strong case for Rayman too. He'd be a good stylistic replacement for Game and Watch.

The way I see it, any 3rd party will probably only be able to throw in one character and that's it, like this:
KONAMI character = Solid Snake
UBISOFT character = Rayman
SEGA character = Sonic
HUDSON character = ?
CAPCOM character = Megaman? (I doubt they would
include someone from RE)
You know, a lot of people only knew about and became interested in the Fire Embelm series because two of its characters (Roy and Marth) made an appearance on the GCN SSBM. They were thus then more likely to buy the GCN FE game when it came out. Now, including Rayman and Sonic in SSBB makes sense because they will have their own Wii games, but doesn't it seem a little odd that they have Snake in there when a major reason to buy a ps3 is for MGS4? I don't want to sound like a lunatical conspiracy theorist, but what if there is an MGS game in the works for Wii (or at the very least the mgs NES game for the VC)? Kojima has expressed much praise for the Wii in the past, including saying he was most impressed w/Wii at E3, and he is supposed to be working on a Wii game... Oh well, I suppose time will just have to tell.

Anyone else thinks that it's unlikely for Nintendo to include Ubisoft characters? So far the only third-party character is Snake, and that's from Konami. As much as Nintendo is trying to be diverse, I don't think they're ready to welcome companies outside of Japan just yet. Just take a look at how well the Xbox360 is being received in Japan...

That aside, if they DO include ubisoft characters, I'd say the Prince. even though the prince is different from his old self, he was a classic in the past. If they were to include a character outside of their universe, it should be a strong, iconic character. I just don't think Rayman is strong enough against the Prince (not just the new one).

Er, wait. Nobody's excited to Sam Fisher pull himself up onto a platform, stun Mario with a grenade, then break his scrawny neck? Hello!?

Kirby, I think, would be immune. No neck.

Personally, I wouldn't want to see Sam Fisher for two reasons: Solid Snake is already going to be in the game, and I can't stand Tom Clancy. I might be in the minority there, but I could do without Fisher in SSB.

I think Rayman would be the most likely candidate for inclusion in SSBB... but personally, I'd like to see Jade the most. She has the moves, and it would be nice to see BG&E get more exposure.

And again... we already saw Mega Man in two different crossover fighting games. Do we really need more of the cheesy little bastard in such a game?

Come on...you know he'd be a great addition!

Of the Ubisoft bunch...Rayman gets my vote.

I think Rayman would be the best fit, though I can't resist the allure of finally being able to pit Mr. Fisher in a fight against Solid Snake. Truly awesome.

Although, Nintendo could put 40 third party characters in this game, and I would not give a shit about a one of them if Sonic was not among them. I grew up on my Master System, NES, SNES, and Genesis, and loved the 16 bit era and Mario vs Sonic debates. Sonic is a character I've wanted in a Super Smash Bros. game since the original on N64, and now that one third party character has been thrown in, the door of possibilities has opened.

The inclusion of Sonic (or lack thereof) will truly make or break this game for me, no matter how awesome it is. Pleeeeaaaaaaaaaase don't let me down, Nintendo (and Sega)!! >

Sam Fisher is just Solid Snake. No reason for him.
The others are just meh, although the Prince could be fun, isn't a bit too Marth?

Sonic is too fast. His only real skill is rolling, something Yoshi and Jigglypuff already do. And they do it much, much slower.

I'd like to see some Capcom characters. Megaman, obviously. Leon, even if he, too, is a bit too Solid Snake. Strider, but he's the Prince.

How about more Konami? I'd kill for Simon Belmont. Kill.

While I'm not expecting or desiring Sam Fisher, lets not be buzzards about 3rd parties.

What are the attributes we think of when we think of Smash? It's playful, fun, and iconic characters. Throwing 3rd parties into the mix, especially after 2 games of Nintendo purity is FUN and EXCITING (when done TASTEFULLY). The 3rd party additives are kitchy and nostalgic. There are plenty of options that can fit these requirements, which could lend itself to going overboard. However, I definetly don't think that having a Sonic and a Bomberman in the new game will detract AT ALL about what makes Smash great.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again- it's a great fighting system. Recognizable characters are bonus that makes it classic and endearing. But playing as a character because you like their franchise is stupid. All characters will be play tested and balanced, as that's what makes a good fighting game. The intelectual properties will be shaken up, which gives it the spice we all love.

The 'speed', 'size', and 'powers' a character from a franchise has are meaningless. Their attributes will be rounded out to make a balanced fighting game, but still giving variety and options in the character fighting styles. So don't worry about Sonic being "too fast," because if they want to use him- they'll use him. Afterall, how big should kirby be in relation to Bowser? And shouldn't Pikachu and Jiggly be able to fit inside one of those tiny pokeballs? It's Smash- suspend your disbelief.

The attributes to really consider when thinking of potential new characters is their 'loveableness' (if that's a word). If all the characters are balanced, the real question is which third party characters will endear us to the new game and perhaps bring in other gamers ala SCII.

As for that Ubisoft game that was similar to Smash- I've heard of it too! In fact, I considered importing it because I was sick of waiting for the new Smash to come out. I didn't get it because the reviews basically indicated that it was like a poor-man's Smash. It was good, but not Smash level of fun.

It was called "Dream Mix TV World Fighters" (i love you, japan). Look it up on play-asia.com to catch some screenshots. It's out of stock now and I don't know anywhere else that even LISTS it, let alone has copies. It not only had Bomberman, but the kid from that cartoon "Beyblade" and, get this... Optimus Prime. Now THATS craziness.

In fact, I had a brief stint where I was trying to find a Smash replacement and wound up importing a couple games. After getting the first One Piece Grand Battle (before they started showing it over here and bringing the games over...d'oh!) and the Rave Master game. Both were 4 player party games, but were more Powerstone than Smash- ultimately couldn't lead me to kick my habit. My imports are gathering dust while my friends and I still Smash it up regularly.

What about that DS game that used all those anime characters? I heard that was Smash-style fun. What kind of crazy licensing stuff had to go on with that to make it happen? I'm sure there's someone on here that would know some stuff about it.

OMG how good would it be if somehow Ninty were able to get Cloud Strife,Tifa or one of the gang members from FFVII. Though from the lacklusture Ubisoft lineup I would say noone the only other third party character I would want would be ninja from the MGS series, now that would be seriously cool.

"28. While they're at it, how 'bout Chuck Norris? "

You all don't know? Chuck Norris was a character in Super Smash Brothers Melee during the Beta testing.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f216/macuseros9/smashrev.jpg

They had to take him out though for several reasons.
1. Every button pushed caused him to do a roundhouse kick (like when they tried him in Street Fighter II)

2. Every time you pushed the button and made him do the roundhouse kick, all the characters on screen died. (as you can see in the screen shot all the characters being knocked around)

3. He was invincible. Look at the screen, he has already taken 666% damage and still killing everyone!

4. (and the reason they were legally bound to take him out of the game) Every time you pushed a button and he did a roundhouse kick, ALL players playing the game immediately died with the characters on screen. (some suspect that this might also be the reason for the delay of every Legend of Zelda game ever made!)

Now for Brawl, I do not think Nintendo is going to try to add Chuck Norris again. It is just impossible to sell games to customers that you kill. Who they should put in is Tom Nook. He has a way of getting money from people, and could really help Nintendo out as a company. He is probably right up there with Chuck though, but hopfully not as deadly!

Some of you seem to be getting defensive about the Smash Brothers roster... which frankly I can't understand. The characters in Super Smash Brothers have always been from different games which appeared on different systems, I don't see what difference it makes whether a title was developed/published by Nintendo. I'd much rather see the Prince than, say, waterpack Mario... not to mention with the space of a full DVD available, I highly doubt the inclusion of a 3rd party character is resulting in the exclusion of a Nintendo favorite.

In my perfect scenerio each Wii game would download a new character to the harddrive / SD card such that the more Wii games you played the more fighters you unlocked... more fighters = variety = fun.

I think Nintendo should have somewhat of a liberal attitude about adding characters- but I feel you can't just put anyone in.

There's a sort of 'vibe' that the game has. It's cartoony, it's playful. Lets say you could put in any 3rd party character from any franchise, but it was the guy from Doom, Scorpion from MK,and the guy from Hitman- that doesn't fit. It doesn't work with the stylistic theme of the game.

That's why I was suprised at the Snake addition. Still, having one realistic/dark person in the game makes him stand out and be really goofy and whacky, which fits into the vibe of the game- playful.

But one, or just 2 or 3 max is enough. Too many realistic type characters would be weird. It would start turning into Capcom vs. SNK

So- I would rather see waterpack Mario instead of Prince, but I would rather see Rayman or Bomberman instead of waterpack Mario. I like the idea of 3rd party characters, just ones that fit. And there are more than enough classic, iconic videogame characters that can work.

Ok, i think we all need to remember the DBZ characters, think of the many moves thay can fit into GOKU:
khamehameha, teleport, spirit bomb: (samus' gun charging technique), Goku/super saiyan goku; regular goku would have the samurai stick and super saiyan goku would have fighting moves instead and could fly for a short period of time ( the zelda/shiek technique), and the variety of melee/karate moves: upper-cut, roundhouse kick, and other basic ones too!

They did it with Budokai!!!(on the gamecube platform) I'm sure it would blow the lid off this game's expectations!

The major problem here though is that it would definitly obtain most recognition than other characters

Could you imagine people in japan and the united states
that would want this.

Goku is almost a perfect candidate for ssbb.

Besides that i would thin sonic is a shoe in. his attaks would probably be:
Spinball, Chaos Control, Light Dash, Fire Ring, and let's not forget the homing attack.

So the characters i'm rooting for are:
1) GOKU!!!(small chance , maybe download)
2) SONIC!!!(big chance of seeing him in there)

But I think if GOKU and SONIC were in there it be one of the greatest games ever!
And if they were i'm sure the game developers would keep it quiet for a better affect later on ;)

Why no love for SImon Belmont from Castlevania? he's associated with Nintendo's early days as well as probably having quite a few cool attacks (THe Mystic weapons would be awesome for B attacks). That, and it would be cute to have a modern style (As in effeminately goth like in the newer games) Simon in a cartoony game like SSB

Personally, I don't think there should be more than 3 3rd party characters. The ones that are going to join should at least be kind of fictional like a Nintendo character. Although Snake has been in NES games, he is a bit too human for my taste. How is he going to have a 3rd jump? Which weapons will he use? The characters that were in Melee had some fiction to them, even if they were human. Take Mario for example, he's human but he has an incredible jumping ability and he is pyrokinetic (ability to create fire by PSI). I ca't see Snake being comical or fictional enough to be in a Super Smash Bros. game.

I agree with goku and sonic, both of them would be great additions to ssb franchise. Sonic wouldn't be to fast and including super sonic as a temporary powerup would be a good idea to, just like in the games. Maybe when you collect the 7 chaos emeralds (obvious there lol). Goku could be similiar, all the different super saiyan stages as powerups would be amazing. Rayman sounds like a good replacement for mr game and watch to me
