Forgettable moments in Nintendo history: "Do the Mario"
Though not the first Mario Super Show video to grace the internet, the above clip of "Do the Mario" paints a dark picture of Nintendo's, Mario's, and the late eighties' forgettable past. Got brand? For more Mario time wasting, visit GameDaily's It'sa Me, Wasting Time! archive.
"Swing your arms from side-to-side. Come on! It's time to go! Do the Mario!" Sheer poetry.

The entire series is on dvd, along with the Legend of Zelda cartoon which aired on the same show. I'm proud (that's right, proud) to say I own them.
The live action portion is frighteningly 80s but the cartoon is gold.
elmer @ Jun 21st 2006 9:37PM
I've been singing this to myself for years (nay, decades) now.
But in that pot of corruption that is my memory, it was my hips and not arms that were supposed to swing.
Crushed @ Jun 21st 2006 9:39PM
How is that forgettable? It's one of the most MEMORABLE to me.
ronnie @ Jun 21st 2006 9:45PM
Its out on DVD, you can get it in amazon, its brilliant.
Ruari @ Jun 21st 2006 9:47PM
Is that Lemmy Kilmister from Motórhead as Mario?
n8dogg @ Jun 21st 2006 9:48PM
I still like Lou Albano's "tough guy New-Yorker" accent over Nintendo's borderline racist depiction of an Italian.
Khash @ Jun 21st 2006 9:50PM
I just thought of another moment Nindendo would love to forget. The GameCube! Zing!
Night Elve @ Jun 21st 2006 9:51PM
Do the Mario¡
urchin @ Jun 21st 2006 9:54PM
I have been doing the Mario for years now, sometimes without even noticing. I just start walking and my arms start swinging and before I know it, I've done the Mario. I wish those stupid dance classes they forced us to take in school were this easy.
Sabre @ Jun 21st 2006 9:55PM
Dude don't bash "Do the Mario"... EVERY friend that I've brought this up with totally remembers it. I also own the DVDs for the Mario TV show AND the Zelda show.
Hervard @ Jun 21st 2006 10:14PM
I used to watch that show; good times.
ea @ Jun 21st 2006 10:15PM
I used to sing that song when I was younger. Brings back old memories.
Mark @ Jun 21st 2006 10:20PM
shear?
Neko Tsukimi @ Jun 21st 2006 10:27PM
I wanna die... Like right now. My memories just came back... Oh dear, that was lame.
Andy @ Jun 21st 2006 10:41PM
What a great song and dance (super corny, but you gotta love it) - marred only by the runaway toolbelt.
mike @ Jun 21st 2006 10:48PM
okay, not to get nasty here, but try watching that video and pausing it exactly at the 42 second mark to see a very early rendition of the nintendo wii.... "juuust liiike thaaaat!" now THERE'S an image you won't be gettin' out of your head any time soon.
Fortyseven @ Jun 21st 2006 11:05PM
Lou Albano is the fuckin' man.
Momus @ Jun 21st 2006 11:09PM
The logo for Dic is more memorable! Show it, goddamn you.
Jesse @ Jun 21st 2006 11:17PM
That was the best show ever. I will do The Mario all I freaking want, man. Get a sense of humor. >_
Tom B. @ Jun 21st 2006 11:21PM
You mean UNforgettable! I remember getting up at the end of every episode and dancing and singing along. I always wondered why the game left out the words.
I had The Mario nailed! From taking one step (and then again) to swinging my arms from side to side. Even that last stumble at the end. Just like that. Man, those were the days.
the godfather @ Jun 21st 2006 11:30PM
that show pwned my soul. especially fridays when the zelda cartoon was on...EXCUUUUUUUUSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEE ME PRINCESS was a classic line from day one and remains to this day.
Chaos @ Jun 21st 2006 11:32PM
Oh my god, that is so old school lmao!!
Remember the Nintendo cereal, one half of the box was Mario cereal and the other half was Zelda cereal.
"Nintendo, its for breakfast now! Nintendo, its a cereal, WOW!!""
:D
saboola @ Jun 21st 2006 11:40PM
High five chaos! I dunno how many boxes of that sugar crap I ate. Remember how it had tips on the side of the box, like the trick to get unlimited lives in that one part of super mario brothers or the exact time to punch bald bull in Mike Tyson Punch Out.
the guy with an idea @ Jun 21st 2006 11:43PM
You know, I used to watch the mario show as a kid, and I remember the cartoon, the mid-show real life plumbers and their anticts, but I somehow do not remember "do the mario" at all?
minus_273 @ Jun 21st 2006 11:48PM
i loved this show when i was a kid. how can this be forgettable
vakerorokero @ Jun 21st 2006 11:59PM
"I still like Lou Albano's "tough guy New-Yorker" accent over Nintendo's borderline racist depiction of an Italian."
I guess you never heard an native italian speak... Mamma Mia! They speak like that, well at least my girlfriends father (who happens to be a chef!) hahahhahah, He's like the Simpsons own italian stereotype chef!
MetaHuman @ Jun 22nd 2006 12:02AM
It's a traveshamockery that it wasn't included in Dance Dance Revolution with Mario. D:
I loved the original Super Show. SMB3 and SMW [also got shows 0_0] weren't as great with the REALLY lame animation and second-string voice actors (second string to Albino and Wells, anyways).
Bardiel @ Jun 22nd 2006 12:15AM
Tabloid article - "Porn Star RON JEREMY'S secret second job, masquarading as kid-friendly icon, Super Mario! Said Jeremy, 'I honestly love kids, and this was the only way I could get close to them without breaking any laws...' "
BPM? @ Jun 22nd 2006 12:56AM
Do the Mario? Forgettable? No. Never. Not possible.
Especially not when it gets revived in an "animutation"...
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/19257
The song is immortal. As is the dance.
danzuke @ Jun 22nd 2006 1:44AM
comment number 7 is the funniest thing I've read all day.
kudos
bv @ Jun 22nd 2006 2:54AM
Man i used to get off the bus from 3rd or 4th grade and run to the tv just to catch the last little bit of the mario show. I loved that anime cartoon they had, it was the coolest shit ever. And every friday i remember they had that Link cartoon, that was pretty wicked too, but of course everything video game related seems awesome when your that age.
Sabre @ Jun 22nd 2006 3:02AM
Comment #7 is the stupid thing I've read all day.
Dave Silva @ Jun 22nd 2006 3:19AM
This show was cool. But later versions of the show, which ditched the live action segments, were not. I still have memories of the Super Mario World cartoon song... Do The Mario is an orchestra in comparison to that.
At least Do The Mario was fun and catchy, and the show had some creativity behind it. The later songs, and shows, didn't hold a candle to the original show.
Sabre @ Jun 22nd 2006 3:27AM
Anyone remember that game show where if you and your partner were the winning team, you got to run thru a maze with a velcro suit and grab games before the clock ran out? I forgot what it was called...
Joe @ Jun 22nd 2006 3:27AM
I just bought the DVDs yesterday.
chuck @ Jun 22nd 2006 3:57AM
Sabre, it was called Nick Arcade. Still shown on Nick GAS every single day.
BPM? @ Jun 22nd 2006 4:37AM
That sounds vaguely familiar, Sabre... Sadly, I can't think of the title, either.
The only game shows I can think of that were game-related (or somewhat game-related) were Nick Arcade and Legends of the Hidden Temple (both were on Nickelodeon in the early 90s).
In Nick Arcade, the contestants' challenges involved playing video games (on NES, Super NES, Genesis, TG16, and NeoGeo).
In Legends of the Hidden Temple, the final challenge was running through a "temple" where each room had different traps and challenges, which kinda made it feel like living a video game. At least, that's how I viewed it.
Greg2k @ Jun 22nd 2006 5:13AM
DIC!
Insomnia Bob @ Jun 22nd 2006 5:57AM
Does anyone remeber Nintendo Cereal? Came in a normal sized box, but inside were two (2!!!!) bags. One side mario, one side Zelda.
Ah, I'd kill you and your entire family for just another sweet, sweet spoonful.
Vilhelm @ Jun 22nd 2006 6:04AM
Oh my, I loved these shows when I was a kid. I even have four on them on good ol' VHS. Super Mario Bros. Super Show is probably my all-time favourite Nintendo-related cartoon program to date.
JRM @ Jun 22nd 2006 6:59AM
nobody knock Captain Lou Albano!!
Especially because he brought in Cindy Lauper and Rowdy Roddy Piper to the show.
Man, I miss that show.
Andy S. @ Jun 22nd 2006 9:40AM
Brilliant, Khash. Yes, I'm sure that "Nindendo" would *looooove* to forget yet another product that they made a tidy profit on. Unlike MS, which should be oh-so-proud of the money pit that was the Xbox. Zing, indeed.
Hint: your comment might have actually been funny *and* correct if you'd replaced "GameCube" with "VirtualBoy". Better luck next time.
Everblunt @ Jun 22nd 2006 9:50AM

Video Power
Dave Silva @ Jun 22nd 2006 10:08AM
@40:
Actually, they did. The DVD sets for Mario and Zelda were very bareboned in regards to Nintendo. I read a report over at TVShowsonDVD.com that Nintendo, at least today, would really try to forget that they allowed something like this to happen.
It's the reason why we will likely never see a Captain N DVD set...
Thomas Crymes @ Jun 22nd 2006 11:27AM
Wow. I'm just a little too old for the Mario stuff, but it amazes me the junk kids like. If I go back and watch the stuff I thought was excellent (Starblazers for one) I can see just how dreadful they were. Nostalgia of that kind is best left as a fond memories instead of a reminder that kids will pretty much watch anything.
Pickypants @ Jun 22nd 2006 11:47AM
First of all, if you're too young to remember this, you have no business writing for this news blog.
I'm not saying Blake Snow is, but I know other bloggers here are.
The SMBSS was a cultural phenom for myself and my friends when we were younger. While all the "cool" kids were talking about sports and makeup, we were playing video games, and waiting until Friday for The Legend of Zelda.
I have never so much looked forward to a Friday in my life. Those kids who were "cool" in elementary school now mix concrete or work in real estate while us "dorks" make buttloads of money and have a sunny disposition.
This is part of my history goddamnit, don't you make light of it!
J Ron @ Jun 22nd 2006 11:50AM
Hahaha.
I too remember the nintendo cereal:

I hope that link works. You can always search youtube.com for 'nintendo cereal'
WaveLine @ Jun 22nd 2006 12:53PM
By far the best moment is at the very end where he stumbles. I'm assuming ol' Lou was hitting the sauce pretty hard before doing that.
Sabre @ Jun 22nd 2006 2:08PM
"Video Power"
YES! That show was awesome! I so wanted to be on it too.
As for the Nickelodeon shows...those things were crap. Hell the hosts didn't even try to sound seriously interested in the game either.
@ Dave Silva:
Well technically the DVDs are put out by Nintendo, they are put out by Shout! Factory. So there is a 'slim' chance Captain N 'might' come out.
Abe @ Jun 22nd 2006 2:47PM
Speaking of scary video game related TV shows from the past, anyone remember Video Power?
http://members.fortunecity.com/aking1/world/videopower2.html
I remember always wanting a chance to run through the prize round because I always felt the actual contestants did a crappy job grabbing games.
