I was gonna buy this game until they ditched the actual Japanese voice acting(which is fantastic, btw) for stupid English actors.

So, wait... You're saying the combat is so-so, the RPG elements aren't much, the health system is cute, kinda like San Andreas... So what's the really good part that has you so excited about it, then?

I mean, the restaurant is neat, but less rich and less immersive than San Andreas' gym and hospital system; the magazines are cool, but no competition to the GTA series' multiple radio stations (that often had plot-related announcements); if combat is like The Warriors, that means it'll look awesome for the first ten minutes of gameplay, and then get progressively more annoying with each minute of gameplay... But it sounds like you saw something that made you think it'd be something special, so---what was it?

Um.. Final Fantasy XII anyone?

Game looks interesting though.

I agree with #1. I was seriously considering dusting off my rarely used PS2 for this until they ditched the Japanese dialogue. It's like watching anime or other foreign movies dubbed in english. It's fingernails-across-a-chalkboard painful. You just don't do it.

The subtitle-versus-dub debate won't result in one side or the other changing its mind. On this, I will say only that if the presentation of the original language is that important to you then you probably have the ability to purchase and to play an imported copy of any game.

Relevant to this specific title? I hope that there's some kind of moral gradient to the story. One of the things that distinguishes Japanese gangs from their European and American counterparts is the idea that they're ideologically descended from samurai, and so have a sense of public service. In the real world, you had yakuza handing out food and emergency supplies in the aftermath of natural disasters and other emergencies in Japan. You don't generally see the Gotti family, the Aryan nation or the Crips doing the same.

"A hit in Japan since it was released last winter, many of those who knew about Yakuza upon hearing a version for the English-speaking crowd was coming stateside."

WHAT? I can't make sense out of this very first sentence!!!

otherwise sweet review and I will be buying this game!!

What about *God Hand*? HELLOOOOO God Hand is a Capcom game made by a Team comprised by Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Viewtiful Joe's creators!!

So many great games *still* coming for PS2. Most of those will probably be better than anything coming out 2006 on next-gen platforms (except Zelda, unless you discount Wii as 'next-gen').

That is one strange game I must say... some western brawler with a laugh track? Weird.

"Um.. Final Fantasy XII anyone?"

Add Rogue Galaxy as well.

So, did Joystiq get "hands-on" with a US version with English voices or did they just play the original Japanese? The voice acting was interestingly not mentioned in this post ...

I have the original Japanese version of this game, and I have to say that it's pretty cool. I'm in Japan, so I've never actually dealt with any games that are dubbed... are they so bad that you would just rather not buy the game at all???

Whoa, what's with the hatred of the guys who prefer Japanese voice acting in a game that takes place in Japan and is about the Japanese mafia? They should keep the Japanese voice acting as an option for those who prefer it, simple as that. I especially like hearing Yakuza speak Japanese; it's different than typical Japanese. It's harsher, has more rolling "r's" and such. It's just as much a part of Yakuza culture as tattoos and gambling. Replacing it with an English speaking voice actor, no matter how good, is not going to have the same effect.

Yes, some english voice acting is so bad that it caused me to not purchase games. Some examples? Suikoden 5, Dragon Quest 8 (among other changes, I refuse to buy it), Tales of Phantasia on gba. Most of the other tales games I play with the voice acting turned off (Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Destiny 2/Eternia). Ys6 Ark of Nephistim also had terrible english voice acting, and a terrible cg intro but THANKFULLY there was a cheat code you could enter to restore the original voice acting and intro/ending. If all game companies included selectable voiceovers than I would be a much happier gamer... too bad that's hardly the case.

So a western developed gangster game= crap!, but an eastern developed gangster game that is very similar to western developed game = great? I am so sick of ethnocentric gamers.
Cheers!
