Ah cage reread that.

New Super Mario Bros.
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day
Big Brain Academy
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow

2006 FIFA World Cup PS2

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter X360

Hitman: Blood Money X360

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories PS2

2006 FIFA World Cup XBOX |

Rankings based on Bestbuy.com sales figures from 6/11/06 to 6/17/06

Dawn of Sorrow is now on backorder. As are a lot of DS games. Plus that is the online best.buy site. When one tracks actual game sales in the US PSP rates very low in game sales. Also Nintendo is making a killing on lite sales. PSP sales are going downhill fast in every region. Give it six more months before we start seeing a ratio of seven DSs sold for every PSP.

And yes any store will tell you replacement PS2s are counted among Sony's 100 million PS2s data. In fact stores will tell you they replace numerous PS2s every week.

DS Lite - 141,487 [2,329,621] units
PSP - 24,653 [870,267] units
NDS - 22,748 [915,404] units
__________

You know what.. this basicly shuts all those psp fanboys up.. next time you hear how the PSP released later then the DS.. show them how much DSlite did in its 1 year behind psp run... more then double the sales in less then what? 6 months? 4 months? i mean hell! 2 million units total!!!

"And seeing the DS kick major butt in sales never gets old either."

it's great how supporting your favorite console in any way is fanboyism.

As far as the DS not having a library, hey everyone is entitled to their opinion but show me a better library on another portable that's not called GBA and I'll buy it. PSP sure ain't it.

I can see portable gaming catching on big here. Give you an example. I was going home from work last night. It was a bit too hot to walk it so I caught the bus. I booted up my DS lite and set up a match in Metroid Prime Hunters and then put the DSlite in sleep mode.
When the bus came I knew I was only going to have a 10 minute ride myabe 15 minutes at best but I was still able to get in a great game of Metroid deathmatch before my stop came up.

This type of quick access is why I play my DS lite more than my consoles. When I'm not at work, I'm working on sketches and designs, music or something else. If I want to take a break, I can pull out the DsLIte take it out of sleep mode and play a little metroid, maybe some Meteos or try and find those coins on Level 5 in Mario. I can put my DSlite back in sleep mode and go back to work. It's awesome. Nothing missing a beat. If I see a friend in the local EB games or in the mall, we link up for a quick game of Meteos or Age of Empires if we have time. I like having the access and stability of knowing my dS lite is just a quick flip of the top screen away from getting a game in. That's a few of the many reasons why I'm sold on portable gaming.

I wonder on a blog somewhere in Japan, when they release the US sales figures, if they have a picture of Bill Gates, buried under mountains of yen, with a cartoon balloon, 'I make money no matter what!'

@ Strider:

You also forgot to add that you can do all of that and not have to worry about the battery dying off in a short amount of time.

/waits for people to start flaming me for criticizing the PSP...a system which I OWN.

I think the DS has hit a nerve. It's radibly expanding userbase is essentially a coalition of Nintendo fans (who will buy every Nintendo system); former gamers who may have disliked the state of gaming in the last 5 years, adults, the so called non-gamers and the like.

I think DS is on its way to being a very successful console. Numbers I've seen show its at around 20 million installed base world wide. For perspective GameCube sold a little more than 20 million and its been on the market since 2001, the DS is just getting started and we're in mid-summer with a holiday season coming up.

Why should anyone outside Japan even care? We aren't even in the same culture as gamers. I'm more interested in hardware sells in England or France.

Why don't you show UK, European, Australian and USA weekly charts? I want to see the whole picture. Japan is just a small percentage of worldwide sales these days.

I knew that if Nintendo re-stocked retailers with Nintendo DS (original) units, then they'd sell 20,000+ a week. I hope that Nintendo continues to do this, because if they manage to sell 120-140,000 DS Lites on average per week in addition to 20-30,000 DS Phats, they'll really be on a role. Personally, I think that Nintendo should re-release the DS Phat with a "New Brighter Screen" like they did with the GBA:SP after the Micro came out. Then Nintendo would absolutely be able to sell at least 20,000 DS's a week without lowering the Lite's insane weekly sales. The ratio of Nintendo to Sony systems sold for 2006 in Japan has to be around 2.25 to 1 at this point.

Portables are more popular in Japan at the moment than in America because the Japanese ride a lot more public transit than Americans do. Portables are perfect for that sort of ride, especially the new wireless ones, the DS and PSP.

Now, the PSP sells well enough. A good number are sold every week, the games sell OK, Sony probably makes a profit and considers it a success. The PSP has in no way failed-- it's just in a solid second place.

However, Nintendo through some mix of branding and understanding what kinds of games people think are fun on portable platforms (which, believe me, differs from the kinds of games people think are fun on home consoles) and maybe just plane insane genius/luck, has hit upon something unique. The DS sells OK in the US, not as good as the PSP, but it makes money. But in Japan, the thing has become a darn social phenomena.

Personally, I think the DS just has better games for the shorter lengths of time many people have when playing handhelds, especially on public transit or during a break or something. You can play 15 minutes of Nintendogs or Advance Wars and get something out of the game-- when I play GTA, I prefer to have a bigger screen and an hour or so to play around.
