Square Enix confirms Final Fantasy III wi-fi enabled
A few days ago, we were sent a scan of a page from Nintendo Power. The image suggests that Final Fantasy III (DS) will feature Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support. See the tiny blue icon?Today, IGN confirmed with Square Enix that FFIII would indeed be wi-fi enabled. Unfortunately the company representative added, "I can't reveal the details at this time." Final Fantasy III is scheduled for release on September 12.
[Thanks, Sean]

Derbeste @ Jun 23rd 2006 1:51PM
This is the single most exciting title that has been announced for the DS.......period.
Sure it's a remake and sure it's milking the FF franchise for all it's worth.....but thank goodness FF is worth that much. Because milk never tasted so good.
And it's fortifide with Vitamin D. :)
Indiana Jones @ Jun 23rd 2006 1:53PM
omg!! square enix.. is there anything they cant do? I cant wait for this, i just pray that it isnt something lame like swapping items only over wifi! The DS needs a game that makes the most of wireless play, no crappy 4 player limits like in mario
OmegaX @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:04PM
"Sure it's a remake"
Yes, but it's a remake of a game most people outside of Japan have never seen. "Final Fantasy III" as most people know it is Final Fantasy VI.
If that's not what you meant, then I apologize, but I see that misconception a /lot/.
Derbeste @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:16PM
@4
I have beaten EVERY FF ever made. That means I have played all the JP games on ROMs. Unfortunately, it also means I puked my way through Mystic quest. :'(
That's my cheeky and arrogant way of saying....yes....I know it's not FF6. Sidebar though...FF6 is being ported to the GBA with some extras. I'm stoked for that as well. :)))
Amos @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:23PM
Ummm...so what the heck does it do? Lol. It's cool n' all but uh...it's not that amazing until we know what connection's actually going to be USED for.

Seeing how I'm gay.....that, much like FF, sounds really "fucking" hot.
Only thing hotter is playing FF3 while receiving said anal. /drool
crono141 @ Jun 23rd 2006 2:40PM
Yikes...
Shad Genki @ Jun 23rd 2006 3:13PM
Jeez, no need to get all Frankenstein on Final Fantasy. "GRRR!" It's just a game!
32_Footsteps @ Jun 23rd 2006 3:22PM
Hey, I'm all about FF3 DS myself, but can I ask why it would be wifi-enabled? It's not a multiplayer game at all. What good will wifi do for the game?
Now, I'm not saying it won't turn out to be interesting, but until I hear more I don't see a reason to care.
TDub301 @ Jun 23rd 2006 3:27PM
I'm interested in knowing what the wifi is for. Unless it's co-op play, with an RPG, it's probably going to be something stupid like swapping items, that was mentioned earlier. I never played III (although I did play through Mystic Quest, although I don't know why) so maybe you could have pvsp battles with parties that are put together. That may be interesting. But other than those 2 things, it's probably not worth the wifi connection in the first place.
Etheo @ Jun 23rd 2006 4:16PM
They'd better make this wifi to co-op. If it's swapping items (mentioned twice already) then it's a damn shame. Co-op is where the money's at. Who cares about your shitty items?
With that aside though, I'm completely happy that they're making use of DS wifi :D
striderhayasa @ Jun 23rd 2006 5:49PM
If they made it WiFi co-op it would start to move towards FF:CC style of gameplay. I saw some screens of FF CC for the DS and it looks like it's built from the FF III engine. If I remember right, FF CC is supposed to support Wifi too. I'm not a big fan of FF like I used to be but I'll check it out.
Single most exciting game announced for the DS....
ZELDA PHANTOM HOURGLASSS!!!!

While the anal visions you gave me are disturbing, i do understand your position. It was less than 2 years ago i thougt the FF games were the biggest pile of dog poopies ever made, and i alway argued that Zelda was a much better franchise. That was until the day i was stuck in a half empty house for a week and the only games they had were 007 racing and FFVII for the ps1.
Now i cant stand racing games, especially ps1 racing games so i thought "stuff it" and plugged in FFVII. I tell you what, after getting through the first disk, i was totally hooked, and i love the FF series now (Mainly FFVII and FFX/X-2). Just get into it, you wont regret it.
Zero_ @ Jun 23rd 2006 10:32PM
I might grab a DS Lite for this game, depending on how it utilises Wi-Fi. If it's something completely useless like connecting to a Wireless Access point to get some secret, no, but if it was multiplayer or something, that'd be great.
To 7:
I used to have a friend to didn't even play Final Fantasy VII and just criticised it because it kept being labelled as the best RPG ever. Then one day, I told him to shutup and play the game already, and he did so. I didn't hear from him for about 3 weeks and then he emerged and wouldn't shutup about how awesome the music was and now Final Fantasy VII is one of his favourite games of all time.
While the series obviously isn't supposed to appeal to every single person, it just seems that you haven't really played a Final Fantasy game and calling it 'gay' because it's the cool thing around the 'net.
Darcrequiem @ Jun 23rd 2006 11:29PM
I am a huge Final Fantasy fan and well. I despise Final Fantasy 7. Its the most overrated game in the series and only the horrific FF8 and the godawful FFX-2 surpass it when it comes to being just plain bad. Final Fantasy VII has a story with more wholes in it than a wheel of swiss cheese. The materia systems ruins character individuality and the only thing that truly makes the characters different is there limit breaks. The only thing I really like about FFVII is that Sony put a huge ad campaign behind it, it sold well and now we western gamers get our hands on most if not all the good RPGs coming out of Japan.
Final Fantasy VI is far better than FFVII when comes to characters, story, and gameplay. Oddly enough its a better looking game now. 3D games don't age well and I actually have an easier time going back to the old 2D FF games. Well FFIX hasn't aged that badly.
I had actually lost interest in Final Fantasy after suffering through 7 and 8. Thankfully FFIX was a good game and FFX was excellent. Too bad FFX-2 was so awful. Its one thing to make a bad game, but its another thing to make a sequel that bastardizes the world of the previous game. I used to want Final Fantasy direct sequels but X-2 cured me of that desire.
Draco @ Jun 23rd 2006 11:51PM
I think the wifi will be for co-op play, each player (up to 4) takes control of 1-3 characters in battle, much like the snes games have 2 player mode.
this way you can control your own guy in battle, and yell out to your friend to heal you. nothing better then hearing your 6'2" 220lbs friend shrieking at you to heal them.
darkdreamr @ Jun 24th 2006 12:22AM
Heres hoping they pull a big suprise box out and say.. FF3 is part MMORPG lol.. wow that would make me crap one for sure... of course.. after that trucker pulls out.. lol
striderhayasa @ Jun 24th 2006 7:22AM
@ Darcrequiem
I thought I was the only person that felt that way.
I loved Final Fantasy on the NES and the SNES. I absolutely couldn't stand FF7 FF8 and gave up by the time FF9 came out.
I still think the American FF3 is the best in the series. It's a shame that people think that the FF series didn't really start until it came out for the PS. The old 2D versions are better than the 3D versions. To this day I've never supported the PS FF because of this
striderhayasa @ Jun 24th 2006 7:31AM
@ Zero
I work with this girl that loves FF, but won't play the older versions because they're sprite based. Now, everyone is entitles to their opinion but to me, this is one of the most idiotic statements I ever heard. Keep in mind this female is supposed to be an "artist" from AI and a gamer. I find this disturbing because it caters to the belief that 2D is dead and there is no reason to support it. This is so far from the truth when (as I mentioned in my previous post) the 2D version still play great. I guess she never considered where the 3D version originated from but...oh well.
I have another friend that never played FF. He played FF X and kept telling me to play it. I told him no, it's not better than FF2 and FF3, I'll never play X. He didn't understand until he bought the releases of 2 and 3 for the GBA. Now he understands, he's still playing them to this day on his imported DS Lite.
I look forward to the ff3 remake because of the era in which the original was made. FF3 comes from an era when Square made better RPGs than they do now. The current FFs have great cut scenes and music but I still think the characters, story, magic and development are better in the older FFs.
WTF can't we get a update to Chrono Trigger or the orignal Mana Final Fantasy Adventure or Secret of MAna?
B @ Jun 24th 2006 3:15PM
I can't wait, since I'm a FF fan. I am buying a DS lite for this. Whoever said FFVI rocks,I agree...It's #3 on my list, followed closely by FFX and FFVII.
Hey,Square-Enix,where's my Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger?!
Darcrequiem @ Jun 24th 2006 6:54PM
Strider Hayasa you are not alone. There are a lot Final Fantasy fans the feel the way that you do. In fact, whenever I can get a new school FF fan to pick the old school games they usually agree that the older titles are better. If you have a PS2 though, you should pick up FF9 used, it has a lot of elements from the older games and I think you'd enjoy it. FFX is a lot different than most FF titles but its actually a good thing. The story is well done and I like innovative sphere progession system. All that said, never ever play FFX-2 that game is horrible. The game play is actually pretty good but the story and mood ofthe game completely sullies FFX.
shivr @ Jun 25th 2006 2:30AM
Yeah, I've seen a lot of people on the internet who love the sprite-based FF titles way better than the 3-D ones. For me... the first one I played was VII, and I thought it was great, even if the plot was a bit confusing and the ending a cop out (playing japanese games/watching anime though... you get used to cop out endings >__>
shivr @ Jun 25th 2006 2:45AM
[wow my above comment got cut short by internet magic...]
Played FF VIII all excitedly till I got past the first disk and realized how god awful it was. VIII was/is definatly the worst FF I've ever played. IX was redemptive though, until, again, the last part of the game where things just don't make any sense. And the villian was pretty lame. Never played X personally because, after watching my brothers play almost all the way through, it also looked pretty bad (and sounded awful, VAs = bleh).
Recently I went back and played FF III (jap VI) off the american cart (h8 roms... need that controller in hand, man) due to the aforementioned internet people's reccomendation but... really it wasn't all that different. The characters were cliched and the dialogue was pretty dumb, but I can blame that on the US translators I guess. What was pretty bad though was the combat system, it seemed clunky and random and nothing was explained so I felt like I had no control in a lot of battles. I got about... 30-40 hours in before it just got boring though and I've not got the desire to play again.
I guess the nostalgia factor for the first FF games plays a strong role in what one you like the most >_>
Hay @ Jul 6th 2006 1:58PM
I dont see a problem with any FF made (except Mystic Quest...wtf was that) because even if FF7 ruind the character uniqueness with materia it still takes time to aquire. The story for 7 was godly compared to the story for FF1 and FF1 is the first final fantasy i played. 8 was pretty unique, too much of a love story but it was good. But i would really love to see FF3 since i loved the NES version.
as for the wifi i think it would work playing agains each other but not co-op, that wouldn't work unless it was like Secret Of Mana type fighting, turn based only requires one person.
