Street Fighter II on XBLA dated for July 30?
The much delayed and anticipated Xbox Live Arcade title Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting has gotten a release date -- at least down under. According to Xbox Australia, the classic 2d fighter is going to see the light of day on July 30 for Xbox 360 owners. Rumored to be released in the Spring, then some time this summer, maybe the Aussie's now know something we don't. The U.S. Xbox site still has the game listed as coming out in March 2006 -- perhaps Microsoft should think about updating that. A lot of gamers have been looking forward to this one, so could our prayers for a firm release date be answered?[Thanks Kevin, via Club Skill]

Someone tell me how it takes more than a year just to port and adapt an arcade game to a console. -_-
Zacky V @ Jun 25th 2006 9:53PM
More then a year? Didnt they start it in January
cheekymunky @ Jun 25th 2006 10:00PM
when will you guys learn that if a game isn't ready, they will not release it. If you check out www.gameinformer.com 's preview of it, they said the multiplayer matches they played were very laggy...lag kills an online fighter... I'm sure they are just working out all the kinks so that this game plays the way hardcore SF fans want it to play.
T-Bag @ Jun 25th 2006 10:00PM
This may be just a theory, but perhaps they're trying to co-release it side-by-side with the PS3 to sway sony fan-boys.
Just a theory though.
LongshotX @ Jun 25th 2006 10:04PM
Here's just a theory. PS3 won't make it's launch window in November. It will be delayed until early next year.
Just a theory though.
Andrew @ Jun 25th 2006 10:08PM
Over the last year the 360 has just been building a stronger and stronger case. Hopefully a price drop after the PS3's release will push me over the edge to pick one up.
bv @ Jun 25th 2006 10:48PM
It's not even worth it anymore. They might as well start porting Marvel vs. Capcom 2 instead.
James Sorensen @ Jun 25th 2006 10:53PM
thank god for all the street fighter collections that have been on ps2
one man @ Jun 25th 2006 11:04PM
why all the hype over a game that is over 10yrs old. It doesn't even have that many enhancements just online play big deal. I've been playing this along with Marvel vs Capcom and others on my XBOX for years.
The ZeroCorpse @ Jun 25th 2006 11:29PM
Why the hype? Because games on XBLA are on your hard drive. They don't need a disc, they don't have much in the way of load times, and they are made for the best multiplayer experience. If you were around in the days when Street Fighter II was in the arcades (the 80s) you'd understand the desire for a good arcade-like experience.
It's not just multiplayer as you know it today. It's got the "next quarter up" style of play, which was what made arcades what they were.
If you're too young to remember when arcades were huge, popular, and busy as hell, then you'll respect what they're trying to do with this version. If you're a Gen-Y kid or younger, then you just can't understand the appeal of reliving the arcade experience of SF2.
I can't wait. I've won more than a few local SF2 tournaments in my day.

July 30th is a Sunday.. content isn't released on Sundays
Lie.
Daymond42 @ Jun 25th 2006 11:48PM
From what I've seen of SFII on XBLA, it doesn't appear to be a port of the arcade game, but rather a port of, get this, the 3DO version. The reason why I say this is because it still briefly flashes "Loading" on screen when transitioning from the character select screen to the VS screen, and of course, there's a training mode in there, as well. Now, as far as playability goes, it plays just fine. I'd routed the controls up to the same feel as the SNES layout, and it feels like gold.
matt @ Jun 26th 2006 12:13AM
I really hate to say this, but all of these "new" releases and goodies that are now appearing on the 360, Nintendo wii, and the ps3, THAT YOU ARE HAVEING TO ACTUALLY PAY FOR!!! the rest of the world has been enjoying on thier computers since 1997 thru emulation, without paying one single cent. Yes yes yes, its not exactly kosher with some laws and regulation, but then again, some of these games are so old that they have been released to the public as is. Between me and my friends, there must be a couple terabytes worth of these classic console and arcades games, and I really cannot believe that the new consoles and their manufactures have the audacity to charge $5-15 bucks a pop for some of these games, which if you bought the hard copy off of eBay, or some of the compilation disk that sell on eBay as well, you could probably get for the same price or less...or even better, just play them on your pc for free!!! don’t get me wrong, I love the new systems, but wow, think about it, by the time you pay for a decent library of old classics on any of the next gen systems, plus 10-15 proprietary games, plus the on line fee, plus a couple controllers...you are talking booku bucks! You could buy the parts and build yourself one kick ass gaming rig that can play any emulated system under the sun! Hell, take out everything else and consider this; pay for a years worth of service from a next gen console and, lets say, 30-40 downloads of classics averaging around 8-10 bucks, you could build yourself a bullshit desktop that strictly runs emulators, anything from atari on up to the playstation and N64! Plus you would have a working computer to boot(all be it cheap and nothing special, but still)Just some food for though on all the fan boys drooling over what is already free to the rest of the world

"If you were around in the days when Street Fighter II was in the arcades (the 80s) you'd understand the desire for a good arcade-like experience."
Actually I've Been around since Pac-man was in the arcades. So I know what the arcade experience is like. I even have a couple of old school arcade cabinets I like playing too. Also If you copy the games from the MAME disc to your xbox hard drive there are no load times either and MAME also has the ability to play online too. So I ask again why the hype?
KingOfGods @ Jun 26th 2006 12:24AM

Actually Street Fighter 2 came out about 1991-'92

You're gay if you can't play Street Fighter II.

Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting is being released on the Xbox 360 so that people can play it online.
When people take emulated games online, they all cheat and use macros. I know because I've played emulated games on the internet through various programs. Everyone you play against cheats with macros, which completely ruins the fun of the game.
On a 360, macros are impossible, and so is cheating. Also, it's possible to get good online play with minimal lag. And if they delayed this game because of laggy connections, then it's really good that they delayed it. Fighting games are very precise if you know what you're doing. There is timing on certains things which can be all the way down to 5 FRAMES for an input window. That's 5/60ths of a second. Lag completely ruins this kind of timing that exists in fighting games, which is why the most hardcore people don't like online play. It's because even seemingly lag-free connections cause timing differences, where using one console for multiplayer literally eliminates lag completely, making the game more playable.
I'm glad they delayed it. They saved me from wasting my money on a would-be-worthless title. Now it should be more worth it.

To #13..
Online multiplayer? Check
HD resolution? Check
Achievements? Check
Beat that with your emulators.
And BTW, it's 5 little bucks.. if you can't afford that, then wow are you one broke SOB

To #18
As I said before I can play this and other newer arcade fighting games online with MAME and XBOX and I don't get any lag or slowdown. As far as High definition goes a 15yr old game isn't going to look any better on a HDTV than a normal tv. Granted I don't get any achievement points for playing it. But so far the XBOX live market place has not had anything that I want to spend the points or my money on anyway. Also the 5 bucks isn't an issue with me I just don't see this as a great big deal. And yes I know you were addressing #13 and I am in no way trying to speak for #13 ,but I just wanted to express my opinion since thins is the comment section. Ok I will go back to playing X-men vs Street Fighter online with my buds now :)

Good strategy: old-school hardcore favorites push new digital distribution models.

"Actually Street Fighter 2 came out about 1991-'92"
Just because it came out in the '90s doesn't mean it wasn't first an arcade release. In fact, it was. All the Street Fighter games came out in arcades quite a while before they were ported to console.
Dean @ Jun 26th 2006 3:52AM
The '?' in your title should have been BOLD, ITALICS and TWICE THE SIZE as the rest of the heading. Release dates for unconfirmed dates on any website are purely speculation, this doesnt deserve a news story.
Merx @ Jun 26th 2006 5:19AM
Shows how little some of you so called videogamers know.
"My God all that time they had the game they couldent make it more delayed comon microsoft all the good games come out Ag 8 dure the time when summer gona end."
Its not microsoft who is developing it! Its Capcom. I assume you are a fanboy because of how stupid your comment was. So you are flaming the same people who A) Did Resident Evil 4 for both Gamecube and PS2. B) Gave the PS2 Devil May Cry. C) Gave us Street Fighter in the first place! - All these games helped boost your chosen consoles sales.
Fanboys, you gotta grow up..

"Just because it came out in the '90s doesn't mean it wasn't first an arcade release. In fact, it was. All the Street Fighter games came out in arcades quite a while before they were ported to console."
The original Street Fighter II was released in the arcade in 1991.
KR @ Jun 26th 2006 8:38AM
#8 - You will never see Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on XBL Arcade. EA has the Marvel license, and until they give it up - which won't be anytime soon, there's no chance. At all.
#13 - "Online multiplayer? Check"
Yep, have it on MAME (or other arcade emulators) via Kaillera. Oh, and it's been available for YEARS. For TONS of games. As long as both players are on an OK connection, the gameplay is fine.
"HD resolution? Check"
LOL. Sorry pal, PC monitors can offer much higher resolutions than your HDTV. Capcom is NOT redoing this entire game in HD, they just did a few tweaks here and there.
"Achievements? Check"
Wow, achievements. Whoopdie-doo! I'll gladly pay to play this 15 year old game because it offers ACHIEVEMENTS now!
AlphaCrush @ Jun 26th 2006 9:19AM
what really sucks about this is that it is already available for xbox 1 with online play (street fighter anniversary collection) . All they have to do is get it working under backwards compatibility. But instead they have found a way to make us pay for it again. sigh.
PsionStorm @ Jun 26th 2006 10:27AM
It's pretty simple folks: If you're not interested in this game, don't buy it.
I personally cannot wait for it, and will be waiting in line for the download on day one.
Nintendo's King @ Jun 26th 2006 11:08AM
what about NGC and the Wii
matt @ Jun 26th 2006 2:26PM
Anyone remember years ago when magazines and techies begain compairing home consoles and pc's, and in the end always agreed that sooner or later the two would combine into one...take a look at a media center built pc and the next gen consoles...slightly watered down media center pc's are they not? hmmm, i wonder where the next next gen will be? i honestly dont think there will be any more stand alone console systems in, lets say 2012-2013. Think about it, with the rising price of these latest consoles (save the unique wii) and the identical bits that they are made of in comparison with a decent media center pc, i think, as i have always though, that there will soon be an end to strick console driven markets...we will soon see full fledged media center pc's that are also geared towards hard core gamers...just think about it, look at everything they are trying to cram into the latest consoles, then take a look at a decent media center pc...hmmm, kinda looks the same, no? now take what we have (or will have in a few more months) and think another generation down the road, 2012-2013...your next xbox and the ps4 will most likely be a microsoft branded media center and a sony branded media center for your homes...end of all the crap all together ;)oh, which will still run emulators of everything since the 70's to present day LOL dont get me wrong, i love consoles, but my copy of battlefield2 and oblivion look much better on my 23" sony widescreen flat panel than some of my friends same named games on thier xbox 360 w/ or w/o HDTV...plus i can run literally a couple terabytes of emulated goodness
jumanji @ Jun 27th 2006 12:25PM
I grew up playing Street Fighter. I was a bit young when the arcade scene popped out ( i was about 5 ) but I still played in arcades. I remember playing samurai warriors in this outside arcade somewhere in god knows NJ. I never liked the Mortal Kombat series because they looked too real.
Street Fighter, of course, was always my favorite. Between being cheap and using Blanca's body shock to Chunli's upside down helicopter like kicks (yes i dont know the names but i know the button config), it passed me through an amazing childhood until Sonic, Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, and Super Smash Bros came and swept me all through elementary.
I've had almost every copy of the street fighter, snk, and marvel/xmen combinations of these fighters. And i will tell you this, if you don't f'ing understand what is so great about a 2d 4 frame rate game coming out for the xbox 360 for $5-10, you are a friggin loser. You lucked out on the good years of gaming and the peak of actual gaming skill (no modding or cheats, just plain skill and technique). Fighters were what brought out the competitiveness in gamers. They were the FPS of the past generation of gaming.
Yes, I have waited for 3-4 months waiting for this game and I will wait 3 years for this game to come out for me to pay $5 to play it.
Name another fighter currently out for the 360 that will substitute for SF...i imagine theres none because the other is just bs.
