I love the smell of being lied to by an arrogant Japanese gaming company early in the morning! This clip is one of the classics, as the guy's sense of humor is dry and spot on. Regardless of what you think of any of the next gen systems, even the most hardcore of Sony fans has to step back and ask themselves why Sony is being so dishonest and braindead in the press latey. What are they trying to hide? Given this clip, what does the PS3 offer me that will not be available from Nintendo in a few months, and is not avaialble from Microsoft today -- at a cheaper price?!

Wasnt the orignal XBOX supposed to be leaps and bounds better than the PS2 yet it used the "ancient technology" of dual sticks and rumble that PS and PS2 were using? All this copy cat debate is stupid. Sony introduced the dual Analog stick and rumble to the home gaming world, and now everyone copys it, yet you didnt hear people ripping on them.

Well, the video goes on to point out, unintentionally how unfriendly the dual shock design is to motion sensing gaming. Look how much movement you have to endure by holding with both hands. Any movements that require a 180 degree turn in any axis is going to require more movement than your hands can manage.

Granted this can be worked out, but it's still awkward to see him contort his BOTH of his hands for movement.

I don't think the controller, whether the wiiremote or the dual shock should be used as a replacement steering yoke. Buy a steering wheel if you want that.

The wii remote seems well suited for specific game inclusion. FPS, Sports games, swords, weapons based fighting, even fighting games.

The dual shock? That seems so tied to movement only, it's unimagineable to see it get used as a weapon manuever.

Most adults have jobs. What kind of debt are your friends in? They certainly don't sound like they know how to manage their cash. $600 for a video game machine is a waste of resources unless you have no debt -and- piles of free cash each month to burn.

Actually, Nintendo rumbled before them.

And the Xbox's proclamations of being "leaps and bounds better" had nothing to do with the controller.

The fact is, the PS3 is primarily a gaming machine. How many consumers use their PS2 as your primary DVD player? Exactly. Bluray, shooray. Bluray/HD-DVD players prices will fall to Earth in the not too distant future and standalone players will be the preferred choice for most consumers.

$500-$600 for a machine that plays video games is overpriced. Pretty graphics can be found on both the 360 and the Wii, as well. Gameplay is where it's always been at and all three machines will be able to deliver that in spades.

So, it's your choice and your cash. Be smart.

antaeus,
I take it from your sarcasm you have a job. Congratulations. Now all you have to do is get a social life, get a girlfriend, move out of your parents basement, pay for your own car insurance and other bills and buy your own food. After that, you'll see how unaffordable a PS3 can be (can be, as in you might be able to afford it, but not everyone else). Just because you have a job doesn't mean you are guaranteed to be able to spend over $600 in one day...

Wow...

Come now Joystiq, I didn't know you guys could do something so low. You know why the PS3 costs $500-$600 and it is for blu-ray and the processor, not the controller. Up until now the main focus of every console has been the games. The controller and the system itself have not won any previous console war. The Wii has a great controller and has great games. While the PS3 may have a controller with old technology, who cares as long as the games are good. The XBox 360 controller is probably even more ancient as it does nothing new. A console is only as good as its games and the PS3 looks like it will have many good games for it. Who care about the controller as long as you have good games for the system?

iPods are not $500 anymore, try $150 to $400 depending on model and capacity. Most people are willing to pay this because of the "simplicty" and user-friendlyness of the device and utilities... though I think the software is way too limiting. But, I'm a techie, not a 60 year old grandma with a pocket full of Johnny Cash tunes. And that market pull is what makes the iPod such a winner.

As far as the PS3, I feel that the motion sensing is stuck on and that the lack of rumble will hurt the console. I don't care who was the first to developer motion sensing... I only care about who will be the first to do it right. Gates says motion-sensing isn't practical... well, his controller only supported a few games and cost some cash to obtain. This generation, that ability will be inherent in two consoles, allowing more games to use it. As we all know, you can't program a game for the minority (PC users with motion sensing controllers), but you can for the majority (all users of the PS3 and Wii).

I don't imagine many PS3 games will use the tilt sensors, and if they do, not very well. With the Wii, developers will be forced to use the motion abilities because of the relative lack of buttons. Nintendo will also benefit from the wider range of motion options that the Wii remote provides. Whether or not this will "change gaming" or even be liked is yet to be determined, though I must say I'm rather excited to have the Wii on launch day.

32, id say the controller is pretty important. the 360 controller is leaps ahead of the ps3 controller (how do i know? cause its the same fucking controller as the past 2 consoles). the dual shock was inferior to the controller s

i hate the dual shock analogue sticks, why does the surface curve outwards? why? my fingers constantly slip off them. heres hopin they tighten them up this time aswell. i see theyve added triggers, that would have been my next moan but theyve sorted that out. and please please please swap the d-pad and stick around

like someone else said on here, theyve taken away another way of feedback. now when you play a game you only get video and sound as feedback. the more feedback, the better

Neither Sony nor Nintendo invented the analog stick as people on here are saying. The Atari 5200 had the non-self centering analog stick, and some other crappy thing actually had a self-centering one. The idea that Sony could invent technology is laughable at this point, but I can't wait to use my Playmote on Playstation Live!

Neither of them invented it, but the fact that the developers of the new Warhawk game knew of the motion sensitivty only weeks before E3 (search around Joystiq, there was an article about it here) proves that Sony tacked it on after they found out Nintendo was including it in their next generation console.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think Sony's old PS3 controller design (the boomerang) would be better for motion sensor controlling? I think the old shape would have allowed for easier movement, and the thing looked like half a circle (half a steering wheel), meaning racing games would definitely benefit from the motion sensing. Anyways, I think just about everyone can agree that Sony's decision to stick with the same old (and what I think to be the worst/most uncomfortable) controller is a stupid move that may even hurt the system. I think the Wii (even with it's stupid name) will win this console battle, with Microsoft close behind.
