Prey Limited Editions revealed
We're only a few weeks away from the release of Prey, and 3D Realms is whetting the appetite of collectors with the announcement of the game's limited edition packaging. For an extra $10, you'll get the DVD edition of the game in a shiny metal box that includes a book of artwork and two pewter figurines (three, if you pre-order now). Come on, you know you want that Mutate figurine!See also: Prey PC demo available, Xbox 360 demo WRU?

Gah. Release the game on DVD normally, and stop calling DVDs "special". The industry is trying to move on to higher density discs already, CDs for PC games in the US need to die.
I'm still curious why this is mostly a US problem. On my visit to multiple parts of Europe 2 years ago, I saw nearly every game in a standard edition on DVD.
And for those that say "CDs are cheeper", they are only cheeper if you have 1 CD. It costs more then a DVD to have 2 CDs created now. And it's been that way for years. And if some PC owner doesn't have a DVD drive? Tough. Video games discriminate against some PC owners all the time by requiring pixel shaders on the video cards, or by requiring 512mb of ram, so how is the lack of a DVD drive any different?

I just want the DVD version.
Damn these "Collector's Editions" and damn pre ordering. If the PC has the specs to play the game, it has a DVD drive. Come on publishers, please stop the Multi CD madness and let us just have a DVD.

Agreed. DVD should be standard. If people need to buy a $400 video card to play your game, then a $50 drive isn't out of the question.

Oh, you Americans still get your games on CD's? Bummer! ;-)

Is there a playable demo of this due anytime soon on XBL???

It's a marketing thing. Those that want a DVD are willing to pay $10 more, which increases the profit margin.
Remember, it's not always about lowering costs, it's sometimes about raising the price if the consumer will pay it.

I actually think this collector's edition looks quite good. I'm a big fan of the good old days, where we got posters, figurines, maps, and such, with our new games. I would pirate games far less, if I got something extra for paying for it.

so if prey can fit on 2 750mb cd's then surely the Xbox 360's 9gb DVD drive should be enougth storage for pretty much any game?

I too am sick of CDs and wonder if collector's editions are purely a way to gouge customers who want a DVD version of the game.
Props to Bethesda for making the standard version of Oblivion a DVD even though they had a collector's version too.

Yeah, where's that darn demo on Xbox Life...? I keep checking...
