The Escapist's recent issue explores the importance of meeting genre expectations, like that of horror films, and why the same needs to be realized in video games, as it was in Capcom's horror definitive Resident Evil 4 for GameCube and PS2. Jon Schnaars, an expert in psychology and mental health, writes: "Through [third-person camera shots in RE4], Leon has become every protagonist from every horror film ever made. He is the lone survivor; steadily trudging into the dark when all our instincts tell us it's a bad idea. And as the player, it is actually us proceeding into the dark, receiving (when we're not getting beheaded) our genre pleasure."
For those who haven't played the game, or even if you have but not since it was released early last year, fire that baby up and soak in some of the best gaming this fading generation has to offer.
