In a desperate effort to bring back fans, SOE has just announced that the MMO with the mostest,
Star Wars Galaxies, will be starting an epic, server-wide event called "The Battle of Restuss" that could "permanently alter the
Star Wars universe!" You know, just like SOE permanently drove away tons of
subscribers by blind-siding paying customers with a major overhaul.
According to *ahem* the press release, guards will be placed in major
empty cities throughout the
SWG land. Exciting details ensue:
- Guards will be found in Theed, Mos Eisley, Bestine and Coronet, and will direct players to Restuss, a small city on the planet Rori. There, players who have dedicated their allegiance to the Rebels or the Empire will work together with their fellow faction members to build up their base and arms in preparation for the upcoming conflict.
I bet this is the kind of clutch content that will bring back players by the dozens to this tragedy of a game. I cry for Lucas bathing in his millions.

So... it's the Ahn'Qiraj war effort?
Does someone have to have a mallet to open the gates?

Yeah, the game sucks but maybe some of you bloggers need to learn how to write a little more objectively. I felt like I was reading a game review from a 13 year old.

Here's your marketing tip of the day: If they really wanted to attract new players or bring back players, they'd have this entire event available for free. Throw out 10-day passes like nobody's business and you'll get enough interest that you may net out with more players than you started.
(of course, this is all with the assumption that you have something of value, which is questionable with SWG 2.0)
sintekk @ Jun 28th 2006 3:38AM
hehehhehe: You are right that this post is obviously biased against SWG (which I don't blame them for), but this is after all a blog: for sites that purport objectivity, go to IGN or Gamespot. You are going to get writer's personal opinions here.
Xavier @ Jun 28th 2006 4:54AM
That's fine, #4, except for blog entries where these same people go and call themselves journalists in big emo-blogging write-up style about how gaming sucks.
One day they're just mouthy bloggers who are spouting off their opinions willy-nilly, the next day they are self-important journalists.
Ah, the ever-sweet hypocrisy of Joystiq :)
InIt @ Jun 28th 2006 9:28AM
Wow, if there was ever a game that you guys REALLY hated, its SWG. Sadly #2 is right on about your comments. I realize this is a blog, but you guys really come off as negative and pathetic. Why don’t you go find some lame, irrelevant story that has an obscure link to sex and games and post that instead. You guys seem to be great at that. Idiots…

The battle is a sad event so far. This is what you need to do in Phase I.
Go to Restuss and find your faction’s camp. There's 4 NPCs that will give you a different mission.
1 - kill 40 rebel/imperial.
2 - kill 30 rebel/imperial in space.
3 - craft xx E-11 weapon.
4 - get 500 space resources in Kessel.
Rinse and repeat each mission an unknown number of times.
When a faction hits a milestone (meaning your faction did enough missions 1 or 2 or 3 …not 4 since it’s bugged), there’s new missions but guess what, it’s still the same, “kill X named type of rebel/imperial” and …..
Of course that type of “named type of rebel/imperial” is camped to death and is truly rare. Ahhhhh, content …
By the way,
1 - is being exploited right now. It was reported in Test Center but went live anyway.
2 - is working (wow)
3 - Can only be done by one trader profession, the other 3 trader professions, sorry you can't participate.
4 - is bugged, not working.
So this is it, it’s phase 1 of the great event from SOE.
After 5 missions in space, I did /quit, I'm glad to report that /quit is working fine.
You know what's truly sad, SOE has EQ I, II which are good products. I'm really starting to believe that the dev team assigned to SWG are the dumbest people in the industry. And I’ll push it further and please wear a tin foil hat, I wonder if they really want this game to end because the guy who signed this project and said “YES, this will make a great event/content” cannot be that stupid.
I can't believe that SWG's dev team gives us idiotic missions that are "kill 40 of them and repeat 500 times" and really think, “wow, we outdid ourselves. This is a great mission/content/event” And then they will go in defence mode and blame all players when the forums go in flame.
FYI 3 hours after I logged in and tried the missions I was curious and wanted to see if my faction’s camp changed and gained a few upgrades. It was empty and lifeless (except for the groups of exploiters doing mission 1)

honestly if any of you had actually played this game from release untill the overhaul, you wouldnt object in the slightest .
i payed SOE for two years for this game, crafting in it was rather enjoyable . years of collecting and meticulously searching for resources on a daily basis destroyed in 1 patch, so IMO joysiq are being rather nice to SOE.
anyway enough from me , i try not to think about the whole situation as it just leaves me angry.
i wouldnt treat a cockroach the way SOE treated me and thousands of others .

There is only one true way to save SWG, and that is by the SWG Emu :-)
Amrcanpoet @ Jun 28th 2006 1:32PM
Well, I've been playing since the first month of the game's release, and must say that though I don't like the fact that they completely overhaul the mechanics of the game every year, it isn't as bad as most say it is.
I'm more of a go-with-the-flow kinda guy, so maybe that's why I'm more tolerable of the changes, but honestly, you can't make them turn back time, so might as well enjoy what is offered.
The Legacy Quests are not that rewarding for high lvl players, but they do have some good stories, and funny dialog.
As for the new Restuss quests? Get this: Each repeatable quest gives you 1 Commendation point, which you can redeem for armor and weapons. Problem is, each quest takes about 20 minutes (so, 1 comm. point per 20 minutes), and each piece of armor costs 800 Comm. points. So, basically you have to play ONLY with these quests for 16,000 minutes to get ONE piece of armor.
There's where SOE dropped the ball on the new quests.

Played from launch to last fall. Soe destroyed this game. They need to just let it die. I watched entire guilds move to City of Villains and servers become deserted.
Franklin @ Jun 28th 2006 4:53PM
I know it's a cliche and overused term, but "jump the shark" is the first thing that popped up in my mind when I read this. It's time to shut this down. Maybe in the future the SW brand can be tried again for an online gaming world.
sintekk @ Jun 28th 2006 5:35PM
Really, the only thing I enjoyed about SWG was the space combat. It was enjoyable and the first time I had to use a joystick for a long while.
drcolossus of dataleak @ Jun 29th 2006 12:35AM
This 'Player Event' is basically one big huge Grind! You have to collect medals and you get them by fighting enemies! You need 5000 medals to buy one of the new armors (which I'm sure is mediocre). There are also quests for crafters and guess what it is? Right, a masochistic grind!
One positive thing to mention about the game tho ... They will bring back target locking! It seems SOE finally regocnized that the manual targeting is bollocks!
Almagill @ Jun 30th 2006 11:52AM
The Restuss Event is what it is. The usual mishmash of poorly tested ( /nod TheCheesyPuffs. Not a dig at the TC testers but the way it was done) but potentially fun content mixed up with Mount Improbable grind requirements.
Seriously, guys, do you REALLY want a Mandalorian helmet so badly that you're going to get 800 commendations at the rate of 1 per 15 minutes (with a good space group and no mishaps)
Considering that the development team have been wetting their pants with excitement over this event since way before E3 (another fine mess) there is NO excuse for the current shambles. Nerfs after one day? NPC's hauled becase there was an easily identifiable exploit ? A million and one Kill Ten Rats missions and a named Boss that's going to be spawn camped till Mustafar freezes over....
fierfek, what di'kuts.

Thanks to getting married, I didn’t have the option to starting into this game until now. I’m sad in that I watched with great interest during the development, and was excited when I read of the player based war that broke-out last year.
Having started into playing the game this week, I’m not totally unhappy. I pushed through the training segment to see what the “world” looked like, and have been amazed at how sparse the servers are.
I’m going to enjoy the game for awhile, because I enjoy Star Wars in general. But grind games aren’t my forte or interest. There seems to be a lack of real RPG opportunities, where I can get lost in the game. There isn’t any interaction in the game. No NPCs approach me. The totally lack of a manual in the starter kit I bought was pitiful.
With the other Star Wars games like Battlefront, Empire at War, and KOTOR going so well, I wish Lucas would pay some attention, and get somebody to do something. If they let this game fester in mediocrity much longer, it will poison any future efforts.
