Kojima wants a "PS3 with controls like the Wii"
Speaking to Japanese magazine Ge-Maga, who also published some discouraging statistics, Metal Gear veteran Hideo Kojima and Final Fantasy guru Tetsuya Nomura have both called the PlayStation 3 the best console for the future, echoing similar sentiments from Sony President Howard Stringer. Kojima, while a staunch supporter of
Kojima has been a big fan of Wii's controls but criticizes its lack of horse power -- "in terms of functions, it's a machine with past concepts." We admit, the idea of a WiiStation is indeed quite nice, we will probably have to wait a generation for Kojima's dream to materialize.

I LOVE IT!!!

This is what I've been saying. Nintendo and Sony should come together and make a super system. It would have the great gameplay, franchises, price range, and fanbase of Nintendo. And it would have the power, fanbase, franchises, and marketable apeal of Sony.
This would bring about the end of fanboyism. This of a PS3 that has the durabliity, size, franchises, and price of a Wii.
That would be the system to end all systems.
Baboon @ Jun 30th 2006 3:07PM
Nice job on the Photoshop, whoever did that. I like the change on the button labeling to the PS conventions :).

3rd party Wii-type controller for PS3, anyone?
Mikeawesome @ Jun 30th 2006 3:08PM
I'm beginning to wonder whether or not these "motion sensitive" controls are going to become as huge as people assume, or if it's going to become another one of gaming's blemishes. Some 10 to fifteen years later we may look upon this as we do the power glove and say, "Hey, remember when the console manufacturers were up in arms about making us look like fools while playing games? And, man, Sony's design..." "Dude, just stop, it was a dark age, all right?"
Then again, if it does end of changing the face of gaming, Microsoft may end up looking like a fool with dated technology. Then again, maybe said features won't have a pertinent hold until the next generation?
Only the future will tell, I suppose.
Marc @ Jun 30th 2006 3:08PM

Sony PS3's controller screams last gen.
They really should have retained the old Boomerang design
Mikeawesome @ Jun 30th 2006 3:13PM
Also, I know it's just a photochop to bring about the idea that Sony had stolen the idea from Nintendo, but, to put it into perspective, there's no way Sony could make that controller work for them.
What made it so innovative for Nintendo was that it made it so it could work flawlessly with their back catalog because of the simplicity of the previous controls for the previous consoles, essentially, Sony would have to redesign the controller, and the peripherals that go along with it.
Which wouldn't be so innovative, would it?
Drake Lake @ Jun 30th 2006 3:14PM
I hold no allegiances to any brand name.
That said, no surprise they said that... look at their franchises. The most cinema-envy of any games out there. And what does the powerhouse give you? Closer to cinema.
AssemblyLineHuman @ Jun 30th 2006 3:22PM
Actually, Mikeawesome, the image they used for this post popped up just shortly after Nintendo's showing at the Tokyo Game Show last year, far before we knew about the PS3 controller's added motion sensitivity.
Freezair @ Jun 30th 2006 3:24PM
Well, whether or not it goes through, something's definitely been started with this motion-sensing thing. Nntendo's is the most in-depth, but now that the PS3, and some notebooks and cell phones have motion sensing capabilities, somebody definitely thinks this is a good idea. Many somebodies. It could very well become big.
Baboon @ Jun 30th 2006 3:30PM

I comented on that in a previous thread as well (the Wes Craven one). I personally do not like the PS3 for the reason that it helps perpetuate the problem that is holding Video Games back from truely being considered an art form all of themselves. If games continue to push in the cinema dirrection, people will continue to constantly compair the two. For video games to stand alone, they need to fucus on their interactivity and capabilities to make connections to the gamer that no other media can.
Considering Kojima's past comments, I really hope he can break away from the path some of his games have been going in lately, and to more stuff like Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand.

I've yet to hear any good use for all the processing power of the PS3 and Xbox360 other than increasing the number of pixels. I expect the Wii's increase in processing power over the gamecube will be fully capable of handling the AI and other non-graphical processing of 95% of the competition's games.
So what then would stop Nintendo from releasing an HD Wii in 2 years, or whenever HD eeks toward 25-50% of the market? It could still be fully backward compatible, although some of the release games won't have very good texture resolution perhaps.
TC @ Jun 30th 2006 3:52PM
Does anyone here know if the Wii has rumble built in? or will it be a rumblepak like before? Are they subject to the same Immersion dispute as Sony? Sorry I've only done a bit of checking but I couldn't find anything about it.
I think Wii/PS3 will be the way I go, but only because my preordered xbox360 was delayed for ages. I might still get the new revision of the 360 if the PS3 online isn't too good. I think Kojima is sort of right, PS3 power, Wii creativity and xbox360 Live (and Price!) would be my say.

Stop with the PS3 bashing; in the same article Kojima says that PS3 will succeed, or gaming will die a stagnant death.
I always counted on Joystiq among Gamespot and ign fir objective, factual reporting on gaming, but with all the Britishism (Ninty? Tat?) and the anti-PS3 skewing this place is quickly turning into Evilavatar or Kotaku.

striderhayasa @ Jun 30th 2006 4:22PM
Hideo Kojima is a funny guy. I mentioned this in another post but,
After Metal Gear Solid 2 came out he said he wasn't going to make any more metal Gear games because MG2 was the best there was and there was nothing else left for him to do with the series.
Then Splinter Cell came out and all of sudden, he had a reason to make another Metal Gear. Personally I like Splinter Cell a bit more than Metal Gear even though Metal Gear is a good series. I've just grown tired of....well....Metal Gear (the project) in general. We've been blowing this thing up since the 80's. Can we move on? Just like I'm glad that Metroid is moving away from the Metroids in Prime. Evolve the storyline is all I'm saying.
PS3 is for the future? That's a maybe. The same could have been said for 3DO, Neo Geo and the Sega CD/Turbographx CD but what happened with them? PSX was for the future too. Where is it? If he's so concerned with the future, then why not make Metal Gear 4 for the Xbox 360 too? Could it be that stack of money sitting on the table that Sony left there, affecting his decision? hmmmm, inquiring minds want to know.
I'll become a huge Hideo Kojima fan once he makes another game thats as polished as Metal Gear. Can't be a one trick pony forever. What about a Snatcher for the DS? That'd be cool.
striderhayasa @ Jun 30th 2006 4:35PM
@anon
Dude, Sony is doing this to themselves. The stupid comments, the idea that the PS3 can serve as a blatant trojan horse for blu ray, the ridiculous price tag for the PS3, the lamer e3 conference, trying to pass CG demos off as actual games....this is all Sony's doing. You can't hate on Joystiq or anyone else for Sony's bad press. Criticism for Nintendo or Microsoft is okay but Sony gets a pass? Give me a break.
Rallion @ Jun 30th 2006 4:37PM
Wait...I'm almost positive that I saw something a while ago where Kojima said that he couldn't think of any way to use the Wii controls. Is my brain lying to me? Did that happen?

"I think Kojima is sort of right, PS3 power, Wii creativity and xbox360 Live (and Price!) would be my say."
XBL price? If it was up to me I'd say Nintendo Wi-Fi. At least NWC is 100% free, unlike XBL $50.
But to each his own i guess.
Marc @ Jun 30th 2006 4:40PM
"Stop with the PS3 bashing; in the same article Kojima says that PS3 will succeed, or gaming will die a stagnant death."
Who's bashing? Certainly not enough to make you type that.
And don't blame Joystiq for what people write. They are entitled to their own opinions, just like you. Besides, this IS their site. They can bash Sony all they want.
If you have a problem with it, I suggest you try a pro-playstation site, or create your own website/blog.
SuicideNinja @ Jun 30th 2006 4:44PM
"I always counted on Joystiq among Gamespot and ign fir objective, factual reporting on gaming,"
That was your mistake right there. These blogs are obviously more for gaming info that's interesting and/or fun. I don't see why people demand it be super-serious news all the time. Besides, NEVER look toward the media for "factual" reporting. People's words are mistcontrued every second of the day.
As for complaining about the PS3 bashing, how does Sony not deserve it? Consider that many people are sick of Sony's crap.
vidGuy @ Jun 30th 2006 4:48PM
I shudder to think what such a system would cost...
**shudder**
I think it's great that each system has its pros and cons. Otherwise how would we have fanboy fights and flame wars? ;)
And as far as the PS3 controller screaming last gen, I hope you mean last gen-last gen, as in the original PlayStation, as the DualShock hasn't changed since it's introduction on that system. Yuck.
Jed Merrill @ Jun 30th 2006 5:07PM
How about a Wii60? PS3 has less graphics capability than 360 (better CPU, poorer graphics processor, poorer RAM distribution.) That might not work for Japan, but it would for the US and Europe.
I have long said the only thing that would make me want to pay $600 for a PS3 is a Wii controller. (I would pay $600 for the Nintendo Wii, though I'd like more power...)
However, if Sony just copies it, I will have to boycott it as well.
Nintendo is more likely to come up with the system of the future, based on their patents.

Then it's not as fast as ethernet. I don't hear about anybody downloading 1Gb Demos like you can do on Live. Xbox Live once per year 50 dollar price is justified by the incredible services it offers. LaughingTarget @ Jun 30th 2006 6:07PM
"Thinking two to three years from now, the PS3 will be the most appropriate," said Nomura.
That depends if the board of directors and other big-wigs over at SquEnix determine it is a bright idea to keep backing something that you have admitted would not sell well in the first few years. This means the other guys are going to sell better, get more games, and get the sales.
What I am wondering is why Nomura thinks the situation will magically change from 5 years ago. The Xbox launched a year after its main competition, it was the one that was the most appropriate to develop for hardware wise, yet it never gained the market share. Yet, presto chango, the PS3 is different.
If Nomura and Kojima's predictions turn out right and the PS3 will suffer, as they say, in sales because of its high cost, then their companies are going to start backing the other guy, which will continue to sell units and build a larger lead as more companies start to move over.
I seriously doubt Youichi Wada, CEO of Square-Enix, will allow his company's biggest global franchise miss out on a larger market because the designer thinks the other system will be more appropriate in 3 years.
If these companies were so concerned about sacrificing sales just to back the more powerful unit, FFX would have been an Xbox exclusive.

Hey, Square left the Nintendo camp because of the lame cartridge format. Not enough storage for all of that CG. But in game models are so good now, why the hell do we need CG? Current gen in-game models are great in cut scenes....RE4, God of War, Metal Gear, Metroid. If Square used in-game models for FF XIII I don't see why they would need a bluray disk. With that in mind, why not make FF xIII for the 360 too? XBL support with online content and it would generate more sales from that (360) userbase. Did Sony leave another bag of money on the table for Square, just like they did for, Namco and Konami? Sony: "I'm going to put this bag of money on the table and turn my back. When I turn around, if the money is gone, I expect to have Tekken, FF and Metal Gear exclusive." lol
I understand the xbox 360 is not doing the numbers in Japan but many japanese developers have stated that they want to gain more western appeal. If that's the case then what choice do they have other than developing for the 360? Wii is nice and all but it's not going to have the horsepower to compete directly.
Look, I'd rather play Tekken, Virtual Fighter 5, Devil May cry and Resident on 360 if I had to choose between that and the PS3. Besides, 360 has a better controller than the dual shock. It's a no brainer if you ask me.
Cheaper price with just as much firepower under the hood and a great online service that's proven...why not the 360? Because they're American? Not that again...
the_game_master @ Jun 30th 2006 7:45PM
I'm waiting on the next entreprenur game company to revive the cartridge format.
Cartridge games should be thriving now, as prices of memory gotten so cheap lately.
I'm surprised no one has taken up on the venture. Quick startups, fast loading
Remember N64 peaked the cartridge storage at 64MB for the 512mbit Resident Evil 2. The same game that required two CD-ROMs for PSX
I know a 1GB cartridge would be possible today, that should be well over enough storage, to warrant HD media.
If I had a billion dollars,
Tony @ Jun 30th 2006 8:00PM
"Wii is nice and all but it's not going to have the horsepower to compete directly."
The thing to remember is the mass market for these machines could care less about internal specs, and most have no idea how to understand them anyways.
My nephew is a die hard gamer, but if I tried to explain to him the diference between Wii's Hollywood chip and the PS3's his head would explode. :P
A good example of this is the Sega Master system, It was much more powerful then the NES yet never caught on. Same can be said for systems such as the 3DO, CD-I, TGFX-16, Sega CD etc. Spec wise they was all excellent systems compared to the "mainstream" machines that was out at the time. But none ever really caught on.
When MOST people buy a system they check the price, how the games look and game titles that appeal to them. Wii games look good, should be inovative to play and will have a price point about $400 LESS then the PS3. And has a large library of GC games at value prices that are classics.
Wii is going to be the top selling system, followed by the 360 and lastly the PS3. Sony's days ontop are over....
[-Z-] @ Jun 30th 2006 8:24PM
Kojima is right. Wii fell behind in processing and graphical stand point. Producers that are constantly pushing the graphical limitation of a game consoles will find Wii lacks in graphical processing compare to 360 and PS3. However, look like Wii went different path with PS3, instead of RAW Power, they went with the creative and new concept. Something that Kojima saw and he really like it. If Sony can adapt this matter as well, their reign will still remain. In term of price, stop complaining, the high prices are for the early adopter. You can wait until the price is right which most likely after they solved their supply problem. The consoles' fate won't be decided during the first year of launch. Remember GC outsold XBOX at launch but came out short the next year. Just like XBOX 360 in Japan now, there are still chances of revival.
ipodfanboy @ Jun 30th 2006 10:47PM
HOw about this a 4th compietoier in the console war. How about making a console. A console that is just as powerful as the ps3 or better and with the controls of the wii or better. Both the wii and the ps3 conflicts with each other. Hopefully there will be a console taht can bridge the two together.
striderhayasa @ Jun 30th 2006 11:05PM
@ Z
If we wait for the price to drop, we're still talking about a premium PS3 at $500 and the core PS3 at $300? Sony is going to be taking losses on the hardware so I wouldn't hold my breath for a price cut during the early years of its lifecycle. By the time we do see one, the 360 will be $199 for the premium maybe or $249?
Xbox 360 is lost in Japan.
Let's face it and just get it over with. The Japanese don't widely support American consoles. Don't give me "the library isn't geared towards the Japanese." That's a factor but American games aren't even displayed with Japanese games. They are clearly listed as American whereas here in America, all games are displayed together regardless where they were developed.
PS3 motion sensor truly seems like it was slapped on at the last second as Nintendo started to build momentum with the Wiimote. Phil Harrison can talk that good ish if he wants to but he was one of the first people saying the Wiimote was a gimmick and was what he expected from Nintendo....catering to the younger crowd. Then he has the audacity to introduce the PS3 dual...whatever at e3. Third parties that were at e3 didn't even know the controller was going to have motion sensors until a few hours and some cases a few days before. How is that good planning and development for a multi-billion dollar console? I suspect the Wiimote will best the PS3 dual....something-or-other because the Wii is built for the controller and the games are designed for the controller from the ground up.
@ Tony
You're preaching to the choir. I didn't buy a 360, I'm waiting for the Wii but I'm not delusional either. Many developers look forward to the lastest in graphic technology to use in their games. I'm sure the Wii attracts the attention of the development community because of it's unique features, price, etc but some developers won't produce some games because of the limitations of the hardware. I like what I saw for the Wii at E3. There's a lot of potential with it especially after seeing the quality of a imcomplete Metroid and Zelda running in 480p which looked really nice. I want the Wii the succeed.
molecule @ Jul 1st 2006 12:35AM
Kojima is saying he would like a console that offers the best of both worlds, the best graphics and the best
gameplay. So let me get this straight, Kojima, the videogame god himself, is openly admitting that the gameplay offered by the wiimote is more "ideal" or "better" than the gameplay available from the Dual Shock. WHOA.
You know, Kojima said he was most impressed with the Wii at this year's E3, and then add on to this his vampire game for the DS, Snake appearing in Smash Bro.'s, and now basically his admittance that the Wii surpasses the gameplay of the PS3... This guy is impressed with the Wii, and I think it'd be a good bet that he'll make a game for it, if he hasn't already.

Actually i'd like to point out that most of joystiqs articles mirrors other sites news. Some of it is exclusive but some of it isnt. So when you say Joystiq is sony bashing you need to realize that same story is run over multiple sites (but not necessarily the same wording and i usually get little bits of more details reading multiple takes on the same story). Joystiq is just reporting the news and ive heard the 'this site is againest sony' on a lot of them. Why is that? Maybe because Sony is givening everyone a lot of BAD news to report perhaps?
HylianTom @ Jul 1st 2006 1:29AM
Hmm.. interesting comments. So Kojima likes the gameplay of the Wii, but thinks that it isn't powerful enough? How *ever& did he survive the past 20 years of console gaming development? (/sarcasm)

Yup. When big money from non-gaming companies is flung-about, developers are more than willing to fall to their knees to deliver some "servicing." Whores, the lot of 'em.
[-Z-] @ Jul 1st 2006 1:50AM
striderhayasa,
As you know, PS3 in the next year will be using smaller core and by that time, blu-ray might be cheaper to manufacture. So you are looking at reasonable price reduction. XBOX 360 will also used smaller core in the future and that alone will reduce the price. So Yes, XBOX 360s might always be cheaper than PS3.
If you don't believe how japanese games market is going to affect US gamers as well. Just look at Mario which built NES and SNES, Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid that help built Playstation. Games like Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Heart, Metal Gear Solid II, Devil May Cry, Tekken made PS2 to its status today. Just get over it?? Ask Microsoft, do you think they will just get over it, No!! They gonna put more money in and changes their marketing strategy to turn the tide. Giving up meaan they gave up consoles market already.
As for Wii, Wii is more geared toward current generation games, even Nintendo said it themselves, "Wii is not a next generation console". One might agree 480p should be sufficient for now but when HDTVs made into majority of TV market share. Wii will then be obsolete, their life cycle might be shorter than PS3 or XBOX 360. You might end up need to buy another consoles. As you can see, this is the exact same path of GC. Astounding in the beginning but suffered short life span. but Don't you worry, Wii will succeed but the true question is how long they can hold their ground.
vakerorokero @ Jul 1st 2006 2:58AM
"As you know, PS3 in the next year will be using smaller core and by that time, blu-ray might be cheaper to manufacture. So you are looking at reasonable price reduction."
dude, they can't get the first one to work and you already are assuming there's a cheaper & smaller in the works??? are you some kind of insider?? why doesn't Sony release that one instead for a lower price???
"As for Wii, Wii is more geared toward current generation games, even Nintendo said it themselves, "Wii is not a next generation console"."
mmmm... I believe you didn't read the whole thing... nintendo said "Wii is not a next generation console, it's a new generation console"
HDTV is in 1 of every 24 houses right now up from last year where it was 1 in every 30 houses, by the time it's in every home we would already be living the year 2016, the year of the Playstation 4 where it will actually be affortable to own a couple of these screens. They haven't even stablished a HDTV stardard yet!
Microsoft is too stupid to take advatange of this situation. They were hiding thier consoles to rise populatiry and aren't lower their prices yet, and maybe offering lower prices in XBL against sony & nintendo's free play. So everything is set up for Nintendo to take over against after all those years of staying behind.
Kutaragi's sponsored by Sony as incredible as it might sound, but he keeps his nintendo tshirt under that Sony labcoat. Konami, SquareEnix & NamcoBandai are the same, but since they have this things for merchandising and making movies they need Sony's complete set of medias to lower their expenses, working with nintendo just as a kind of fun project everytime, remember the time they showed the gc-gba connectivity who was there with Nintendo? Square with Final Fantasy CC & Namco with Pacman. Kojima & Miyamoto working together in the MGS: twin skanes remake? Snake appearing In Nintendo's $$$ first-party franchises brawler? even appearing on the trailer for it??
