Ad critic: Sony's racially charged PSP ad [update 1]

SHOCKING!!!
I'm a 23 year old, white male and I even find this an inappropriate and unnecessary form of advertising.

This ad campaign would have never been conceived from a black mans mind, I say this not knowing who exactly came up with this idea but I know that black people are very sensitive to racial subjects because they have been burnt by racial discrimination. Every "major" black race on earth has been affected by the thoughtless actions of the white man; it's a real shame that our children today must see history brought back to life via their favorite (or not favorite) games company advertising.

A MESSAGE FROM ME TO SONY:
Racism at times can be “heard” subconsciously (as shown in this PSP ad) and does not necessarily have to be portrayed “directly” to be interpreted as racially insensitive.
A young, black, female child could interpreter this ad as… “Oh? White people having the right to treat black people like that”.
And a young, white, female child could interpret the ad as… “Oh? It must be acceptable for me to treat black people like that”.

A QUESTION FROM ME TO PEOPLE WHO THINK THIS IS ACCEPTABLE:
If this ad is acceptable then why has there been such uproar over this supposedly appropriate billboard advertisement?

CUNCLUTION:
People using race and skin colour as a medium to define “good and bad”, “right and wrong”, “Better and worse” need to realize that there are thousands of other, better ways to communicate this idea with out using colour and race as an interpretation.
No matter the circumstances, people are sensitive beings and breaching their personal and emotional impedimenta is unacceptable.

Its colour, not race. For goodness sake are we not intelligent enough to see the difference. When did we become such irrational creatures? Its an advertising campaign based on the colour of the new product. Even if there is a hint of something more just let it be. Why humour such ridiculous complaints for those of use who haven't the sense to see that we don't HAVE to be offended by things, we choose to be offended a lot of the time. There shouldn't even be an issue here! Get a life people ... go out and improve other peoples lives and STOP GIVING OUT ABOUT SUCH RIDICULOUS TOPICS. Go protest about the fur trade or the fact that there are millions starving every day or all the irrational and senseless wars. Its a poster. Its an ad. Its for a game. We should have better things to do.

I'm black, I can see how it's offensive. There is no need to bring "race" into this. They could've used other things besides people. Robots, Monsters, Animals. But they chose people, there had to be a reason behind using people. They wanted to stur things up.

Another thing, if the add is supposed to show that the "white" psp is coming to dominate the "black" psp, why is one as showing the "black" psp winning. Is this some sort of safety net incase people complain? Food for thought.

You know, they could have just stuck some final fantasy character holding a white PSP in an ad and it would sell. Like crazy. Sell like mad crazy things that can only sell because of their insane nonsensical hijinks.

What a douche. You own a lot of Sony products, yet you don't like Sony. You want them to fail just because they're doing good now? What the f__k? Hi all.

I don't think the ads are offensive -- that is, racially offensive. I can understand why they could be seen as racist.

I think they are silly and say nothing absolutely nothing about the product. I think they're an insult to anyone looking at them.

I mean, White is coming? Tag line: totally lame. People are paid to come up with crap like this?

Re the images. The poses are extremely awkward, the models look wooden (is the PSP this bad?), and unhappy. This is how SONY wants to support their branding? Neither of the models are having fun. This isn't about a game, this is SONY's foray into VOGUE-like editorial photography.

Why not eroticise it even more with some real soft porn -- showing a white woman "coming" or a black woman in beautiful white clothing with a look of ecstasy on her face?

Shoot, anyone on this list can come up with a better tag line and set of images.

Frankly, the original image is actually more a matter of they're going to be on the floor in about 30 seconds naked and busy together.

Looking at this picture first thing I thought was "Wow, great contrast of colors" not races, Colors. While I notice a lot of the negative comments here about the ad come from those that don't like Sony anyway. Alright, let's be objective here. Sony isn't trying to show rascism in these ads. It's showing a fight between the black colored PSP and the white colored PSP. I completely agree this is just a cat fight and not ment to be racial. (And on a side note there's a lot of negativity to be said about Nintendo and their practices but that shouldn't come into play with their advertising either) This ad dosen't represent race, it merely humanizes the colors of the PSP. One of these days people will stop calling out everything having to do with race when there really is no implication ment to be one. On a side note, the Japanese aren't known for ads that completely make sense. I suggest looking up the commercial for the the candy dipped cookie Pockey.. or however it's spelled.

I do not see people when I see this ad. This is not reality being depicted. I see pawns on a chess board. Jump on the band wagon if you want to be upset over nothing. I don't play video games. I haven't in a long time. I'm assuming by looking at this, it looks like the two "different" systems will be able to go "head to head" in "combat." And guess what. People will by this new system purely because it is a different color. I don't even know what the system is, what it looks like, nothing. But I can deduce these things from a simple advertisement.

If you see anything more in this ad, you're trying too hard. Maybe you have some insecurities with race yourselves. I don't know. I see nothing racist, nothing to do with hatred, and certainly nothing suggesting the white race is dominant. That's WAY beyond the scope of this simple piece of advertisement.

Americans are going to have a lot more baggage about this than other countries because we're still battling the remnants of racism. That much is evident by the fact that such a billboard did not (and would not) go up in the U.S. The assumption here (at least by me and my fellow African Americans) would be that, at best, it's unnecessary to pit white vs. black when we're talking about people. At worst, you have to wonder how many men in white hoods were sitting around the table thinking this crap up.

This is an awesome bold advertisement. A great way to contrast the colors. Anyone who thinks this is racist is a biggot themselves and has a one track mind.

There are different and better ways to make your point. I usually find that eveyone is over reacting when it comes to controversial ads. However, you have a white (model like) woman grabbing a black (boyish)womans face. I'm black and I don't like the ad. I've sold all my Sony products since the root-kit.

I'm a 35 year old black man, born in the U.S., raised in Mississippi (talk bout racism in your face!).

With all of that out of the way, I can see why some people would twitch after looking at the ads, particularly because a black-skinned person and a white-skinned person appear to be aggressive towards one another.

But can you really assume that they're fighting? They could be dance partners or lovers. We really don't know for sure what the situation is just looking at the pictures posted on this site.

I personally don't find the ads racist.

If anything, people should have made more noise about Sony's PSP tv ads with the squirrels that spoke in ebonics or with a stereotypical Mexican accent. In a way they were funny, but certainly walked the line and probably got the attention the company hungered for. Does that make them ok? It depends on who you ask.

With all of the thuggish culture dominating here in the states and the wrong kinds of hip hop proliferating, these Sony billboard ads pale in comparison. Pales in an 1980's sort of "ouch, you offended me" sort of way.

But that's just my own view.

I think what's interesting here in the comments section is the number of ads that claim that europeans don't have racist tendencies. It's so bizarre to me because I swear Aparthied ended less that 15 years ago and there still continues to be racial tensions and who Colonized this place? How about the genocide in Rwanda? Who invented the seperation of classes that ignited it? Look no further than Holland.

Sarah Baartman's remains were only returned to her homeland four years ago, after almost 200 years of them being hoarded in a French museum. Hell where did the transatlantic Slave trade begin?

Didn't the dutch start the slave trade? This add was a mistake that Sony will never forget. I'm watching CNN and the NAACP has already filed a case against Sony. Sony has no excuse! They could have used ninjas or two HOT strippers wrestling in oil. The ad shows a beautiful white female muzziling a black...female? This proves that Sony doesn't care about its consumers.As long as you buy there products, they could careless. I'm a gamer, I game on all consoles and PC. Now I want everyone to watch Sony fanboys/girls defend them on this site. Let me enlighten everyone on Sony...THEY ARE BITERS(copycats, frauds, theivs)! They steal from Nintendo, Microsoft and God knows who else! Looks like someone is getting desperate. So desperate they're willing to play the racey racial card. As far as Holland is concerned, I have a black friend who lives there. According to him, Holland has the worst kind of racism. HIDDEN RACISM! Oh yeah! I've seen the complete ad! This will deal a blow to Sony's profits. And as before, I have no favorites among consoles or there manufactures. Just calling it like I see it!

DON'T BE CONFUSED

As a film director working in both narrative and commercial filmmaking I have to say this: That in a world of imagery where conference rooms of executives have to sign off on the slightest details of an image and it's message, this IS NOT A MISTAKE. Sony's blatent disregard and lack of respect for it's African American consumers is made possible because we unlike our friends of other descent, a) won't protest in mass and b) will keep buying their products regardless of what they say about us. If the ad featured Germans and Jews dressed in outfits that symbolized any reference to the Holocaust ( in this case colonialism and slavery ) this ad would be removed within a week followed by class action suits if Sony would even have the ^%&^% to print the ad in the first place.

We should follow suit, not only African Americans, but people of all races because when you offend one you really offend us all. History is a lesson that should not be forgotten.

People, this is all part of the over-concentration on being "politically correct". In the same gesture as the government banning "One Nation, Under god" in the school pledge of alliegence, People just like all of you whom interpret this as racist, are pushing the boundaries that are set in place by our freedom of speech. The over-analysis as this being racist is a form of underlying racism in the mind of the beholder. If you do not differentiate the white from black race, then you should not see this as a racist ad. Stop being so over-critical and try to look at this ad as it is meant to be viewed, symbolically. "The white woman 'dominating' the black woman" - this is merely a stereotype which ties in with the popular belief that only whites enslaved only blacks. What if this were an add of a tan Nintendo, maybe an Indian, "dominating" a White Nintendo, an American. It wouldn't have nearly as much controversy as the White over Black picture. So people, chill out, stop pointing fingers, and try to realize by thinking this ad to be racist, you are being a hipocryte by differentiating and carrying the stereotype that white and black immediately causes emotional stress.

People who don't realize what this is are truly living examples of how stupid society has become.

There are several elements to this ad to be addressed.

The concept of the ad is cool, but because of the HISTORY involved with whites
dominating blacks, it makes the ad seem racist. And that's the whole point.
It's obviously doing its job: creating a buzz, getting people to talk. Nothing but
a racey ad will get people to actually take time to compose thoughtful blogs about
this, spark debate and communication, (something the ad agency they hired will
claim was their point) this is the kinda ad that exposes the all idiots who haven't a
clue about what racism is, but THINK they do.

Sony can apologize for running the ad all they want, they couldn't care less. You
think this will hurt sales? The profits from this 'controversy' and attention this
has caused will far outstretch the money they'll lose form people boycotting their
products. What, you think they didn't do some number crunching? That their
marketing team was that stupid? Ninja, please.

The apology and pulling the ad is all a part of it. Then social groups and activists will congratulate them on admitting that they did wrong not realizing that it was all part
of the plan.

Congratulations on a scam well done Sony.

PS: There are three parts to this ad as far as I know. One is on equal ground (and if that would ghave been the ad there would be no-or little-'controversy') the second is of the white model grabbing the black nmodel's aface, theird is the black model over her as if she threw the white model (still clutching her face) to the ground) this is the first time I've seen the series of adverts together. It's actually @#!!*&^%$ hilarious. Take the history away and look at it as the colurs-not the people-battling it out and it's just visually stunning.

The government did well to ban "One Nation, Under god". Forcing someone to pledge allegience to a concept they might not believe in is not free speech Who are they to dictate that you should believe in a god? Take god out of it and there is no problem. Let the parents guide their child's beliefs so that they can grow up an intelligent being and make their own decisions...Like reading a book instead of picking up a PSP.

Whether you think it's racial or not, it obviously has made many believe so. That point alone says Sony made a bad move with this ad series.

I still like them as a company, I own many Sony products and won't stop buying Sony because of this ad series, but I think everyone will agree that to some extent this was a bad marketing decision. Enough said really. I think Sony should've apologized for the ad instead of simply saying "we didn't mean anything by it", but oh well. I'm over it.

Marketing campaigns normally are driven by advertisement companies 3rd parties that company like Sony contact to create the campaign, TV spots, Print Ads, etc.
This ad was conceived as racist? Well I doubt that, but the big screw up wasn’t made by the advertisement company, the fault was made by Sony by approving this. The whole point is this could hurt the feelings a big % of the target of the product, if I were Black I am sure that will buy a DS lite instead of a White PSP just in case.

I thought we in Europe were getting over this whole "black = submissive and needs to be protected from the evil white" thing and were just getting on with life.

Perhaps the issue here should not be the "implied racism" in the images, but what gives one culture the right to say to another "you're wrong with being the way you are." Isn't that true racism?

It's just a white woman touching a black woman's face. The only reason it's not racist is because the black woman decided to do it on her own free will.

To paint her as the victim for making a conscious choice is more insulting to her as a black woman.

She obviously isn't offended by it, so why should we be? If it were a black woman squeezing a white woman's face, this wouldn't even be an issue.

Get over it people. And besides, wait until you see the ad when the PSP comes out in red... :)

Um... HELLO! People are different colours. I'm a black guy, my skin is brown, but I don't go around saying, "I'm Brown, not Black!" My cousin is black to but she's light-skinned or as we all say, "she's yellow." Why do we say she's yellow? Because that's very close to the type of brown her skin is. Why are Amerindians red? Because their skin tones have strong reddish undertones.

This ad is wonderful. The composition of each picture is spot on. The point of the ad is that "White is coming" as in the white PSP and if you suffer a moment to think that that phrase should evoke a racial undertone, you need to move on. Get over those thoughts cos racism only survives if you allow it. You can only see this ad as racist if you want to. It's not. It does NOT say "white people are better than black people." It's using two stylized woman to convey an idea about different colored machines. Simple as that.

well I wonder had it been the other way round, that is, a black woman holding a white woman by the neck, if the reaction would have been the same....
I don't actually think the ad is that inappropriate compared to those of certain rap albums.

Ok it's very clear...
The white woman is holding the face of the black woman.
The white woman is in a superior position already in the photo, while the black woman isn't.
Combine that with the simple text "Playstation Portable White is Coming."
Two simple ways of reading it:
1. White is going to overpower the black.
2. It is a threat.
You combine that with a white woman and black woman, it is clear that race and gender is gonna be infused in that message.
They could have just shown the white playstation and said the same thing. They could have used lots of inanimte objects that have nothing to do with the colors. The fact of the matter is that when you speak of white in a superior position over black, there is gonna be a problem. The advertising company and Sony should have seen it coming.
And I dare any Black person, from US or otherwise, to say that there is no message of racial superiority in this ad. If you can sincerely make that claim, then you my friend are blind to a lot of things.

I'll swear i saw this exact thing outside a seedy bar when i was in NY. But there is plenty of Rascism, not in the add campain but in the idea that its racist. I find the add where the black woman is standing over the white woman offensive. because im white. See how stupid that sounds? Its because im white. But when a black person says that about the other one we stop and think. Its a combination of a guilty concience on the part of a white community that in general hasn't oppressed anyone, and a culture of victimhood on the part of a black community that hasn't been victimized. The only racist thing about this add is that we can call it racist at all. Its a belief that enough white people are racist to allow this. Its true that earlier Sony adds could be deemed racist(notably their Squirrels). But all in all racism has become a shield for the black community to hide behind when they should be facing their crumbling culture and civic problems.

Like anything, if people are only given one side-they jump to conclusions! The ad depicted shows a white woman grabbing the face of the black woman (wearing some fairly old garb) depcting that the white woman is chastising the black woman! However when the other ads are seen- its a battle! Similar to Spy vs. Spy. and what the ad has set out to depict is in fact depicted...Black (psp) vs. White.

The creators are fully aware of this and do so just to stir pot...controversy will always jump start a campaign..

Oh no! They have an ad depicting people of different races fighting! They support racism!

Are those women in that ad? Goodness, they're sexist!
Of course, in most parts of the world, the obviousness of white being a sort of newcomer or underdog that may defeat the current leader would be entertaining, and perhaps even the fact that they would make such an analogy would be mildly humorous.
However, once it reaches the US we go into a frenzy, start protests, and boycott Sony's products.
Granted, this isn't one of the greatest ads I've ever seen, but it certainly isn't as bad as some of the ads that are shown regularly on television.
Racism is a terrible mindset, and its existence is most unfortunate. But I don't see how it can be overcome when we revert to the ways of the Salem witch hunts by pointing at people then accusing them of being racist, and figuratively burn them at the stakes; for that causes a new type of racial tension that only adds to the problem.

I love the United States, but we certainly do have our share of troubles.

I think it's obvious that whether this is racial or not, is up to each viewer and varies greatly. I am simply dissappointed in Sony.
Not for creating a potentially "charged" ad, but for being desperate enough to resort to such unimaginative ad tactics. It's like when you have a comedian who's funny and curses a lot, and one who is equally funny but uses clean language. One is not funnier than the other, but the "clean" comedian has displayed greater talent and skill for not having to resort to injecting course language, which almost always makes things funnier. It's like taking the easy way out. Any company can make a controversial ad and get attention. But the great ones are instead ingenious.

I was very disappointed by this ad campaign. Folks, let's be honest. The ads do not promote racial harmony of any type...but instead portrays animosity between the races. This type of advertising is unneeded and unwanted. This is an unprovoked attack on peoples of color...and a disgraceful assumption that people of caucasion races can only see others as a threat.

Excellent! I like peach coloured better than white. I am a Peach Man, and though I personally feel that I am being held responsible for the hurtfulness, and sheer ignorance of past generations of Peaches, I also realize that there is MUCH hate in the world.

To all those who say that Sony is just using "shock" to sell product... ask yourself this; Just where will they draw the line? Scantily clad toddlers? Depictions of rape? If they are willing to play such disturbing ads as this, what will they do when we become desensitized?

Also to those who say that Europe is free of Racism's stain: Where have you been sleeping? Racism, Ethnicism; We in North America see on the news that you share these all too human failings. When we are sure of our moral superiority we can relax our vigilance and slide back into Hate. By not taking stands on issues such as this ad, we send the message that it is OK.

This is an ugly ad set. It is clearly not an innocent comparison of black and white and ad designers KNOW how to impact people on multiple levels. Sony produces another sexist ad with a bikini clad 'blonde' slapping her own but and declaring she is 'fun' while a heavy woman talks about intelligent issues in the nintendo design. Anyone want to vote that the ad designers in this case weren't aware of how they were coming off. Sony is blowing off an enormous population of gamers with their offensive ad campaigns. I own lots of Sony stuff -- but I won't be buying any more. I don't trust corporations who shoot off their own foot playing to a narrow, immature demographic. Think I will stick with a company who has a future.
