Third Resident Evil film to be buried in desert
And in our wildest dreams, it would be right next to those E.T. The Extra Terrestrial cartridges. Too bad you can't win them all. Or even one, in the case of non-sir Paul W. Anderson. He's the man writing the script (if that's what we call randomly flinging words at a blank page) for Resident Evil Colon Extinction, the third film adaptation of Capcom's survival horror series. Previously, he directed the first Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat (hey, that wasn't so bad!) and Predator castration epic, Alien vs. Predator. Speaking at a recent Hollywood and Video Games summit, in Beverly Hills Mr. Anderson outlined his original vision for the shambling corpse of a trilogy. The first film would act as a prequel to the game, the second as an intersecting companion and third as a post script.Interestingly enough, the third film just happens to be set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, which is either a tired narrative device or some sort of meta-commentary on the series itself. The world's been overrun with undead fellows and the only survivors, which include Milla Jovovich's Alice, Jill Valentine and Code Veronica escapee Claire Redfield, must make a run for it in armored convoys.
"So that's where the movie takes place, primarily in the deserts of Nevada and around Las Vegas. But of course, it's a Las Vegas that has kind of fallen now, because what's happened is, with no one to take care of it, the desert has come back in and half-buried Vegas. So... we built all these casinos which are sort of buried in the sand." We'll take a gamble and hold out some vague hope that this will pull a Resident Evil 4 and make the series sparkle.
Or not. This Hollywood machine is rigged.

For those of you wondering, the bladed instrument she's carrying is called a Kukri.
Contrary to what Max Brooks would have you believe, swords < guns when it comes to zombies.

By the way, Milla Jovovich was the only reason I saw Ultraviolet (that and the cheapseat cost of $1.50).
I'll watch ResEvil 3 just for her *droool*

"Resident Evil Colon Extinction"
Are you serious? Why not just call it "Resident Evil Explosive Diahrrea"?
I actually enjoyed the first two RE's enough to buy the box set, though. The reason, of course: Milla.
Alan @ Jul 4th 2006 5:17PM
Resident Evil; Extinction. I enjoyed the first 2 films better than I did Dawn of the Dead Remake (boring after first 2 minutes) and land of the dead (zombies shouldn't have intelligence.)
renaldo @ Jul 4th 2006 5:18PM
So I see everyone is blindly optimistic.
WARLYKE @ Jul 4th 2006 5:18PM
I like the second one, the 1st BLEW thg. Not at all faithful to the game franchise like Tomb Raider 1. Milla is a fab acctress and bought the rights to the film adaptaions but I guess she doesn't excerise that much creative control in the area of who directs the film. Mortal Kombat, PG-13 AVP?! I took my entire family to see the 1st Rez movie. I've never been so mortified.
that guy @ Jul 4th 2006 5:28PM
I enjoyed the first two - the sequel was even better because (on purpose or accidentally) the sequel had a lot of cool little things that looked like they were taken right out of the second and third RE games.
I'm usually not too picky about these kinds of movies, but even I think this one is gonna be lame because it has NOTHING to do with the series, unless of course, this is where the series (of games) is headed.
Oh, and yes, Milla is f'ing hot. That brunette in the sequel was smokin' too.
Derek @ Jul 4th 2006 5:38PM
It's supposed to be Resident Evil: Extinction, they just SPELLED COLON OUT (FIX IT!)...dont ask me why.
Well at least with swords you never run outta ammo!
I believe Paul Anderson will do a great job with this RE, although the second RE was better than the first, the first one set up RE and helped it build into what now is a great trilogy (well if you dont count the 4th movie being made, which it will be!)

"Not at all faithful to the game franchise like Tomb Raider 1."
Newsflash...NOTHING is ever going to be 100% faithful to its original source. The same can be said for book-to-movie/TV adaptions as well. There is ALWAYS going to be some sort of change to better fit either length of the movie/TV show or to make sure that those who don't know the backstory aren't lost.
John H. @ Jul 4th 2006 5:50PM
Er, you know, guys, that these movie companies have basically created a mechanism by which your libidos are converted into elemental suckiness.
If you're going to a big-budget blockbuster just to see a woman in tight clothing, then why not save yourself a bunch of cash and invest in some pin-up posters? You can put it on your wall, and it'll make Hollywood healthier place.
Dave @ Jul 4th 2006 5:55PM
I didn't think it was so bad either. I rather enjoyed the first two films.
Dave Silva @ Jul 4th 2006 6:10PM
I'm just happy that the film's being made near my hometown of Mexicali, Mexico.
I only wish I could've been cast as an extra... I found out too late.
Killer_Twinkie @ Jul 4th 2006 6:17PM
It's not that the first and second films were particularly bad they just didn't tie in with the games much and it sounds like this one will even less. I was fine with the franchise until the end of Resident Evil: Apocolypse when Alice gets her powers, that and the fact that Nemesis was pretty lame in it.
Babu @ Jul 4th 2006 6:46PM
Is it just me, or is Milla Jovovich wearing assless chaps?
risingsunofnihon @ Jul 4th 2006 7:09PM
So does this mean the other two Resident Evil movies actually made money? I saw the first one, but I didn't really like it so I didn't bother to see the second. Did you think it was worth two hours of your life?
WARLYKE @ Jul 4th 2006 7:33PM

"Newsflash...NOTHING is ever going to be 100% faithful to its original source... ...There is ALWAYS going to be some sort of change to better fit...
True, but just like w/ AVP, the fear you got from playing thrgh the game, bcuz of the well directed moments of Zombee/ k-9/ T-Viruse monster attacks, weren't there (in the film).
That the ESSENCE of Rez Evil.
illspirit @ Jul 4th 2006 7:43PM
"...and land of the dead (zombies shouldn't have intelligence.)"
Err, George Romero wrote the proverbial book on zombies. Arguing with him would be like telling George Lucas he was wrong about Jedis using light sabers...
Danno @ Jul 4th 2006 8:10PM
16, *ahem* Midichlorians.
I liked Land of the Dead though.
Zombies aren't a villain as much as a force of nature (in the good zombie films anyway) to be dealt with like other forces of natures: preparation and procedure. By making them at least a little intelligent, they become more compelling villains. Bud was the best thing in Day of the Dead, after all.
deft @ Jul 4th 2006 8:29PM
Man, I wish I would've been an extra...
*is from Mexicali, one of the locations for the movie*
But I found out way too late...
Oh well, lets hope the movie doesn't suck, too much.
zombiejim @ Jul 4th 2006 8:29PM
Milla Jovovich is really not that hot. Nor is she any reason to pay the usually ridiculous price for admission to the movie. Also the second movie was NOT faithful to the games. If anything the first was better for staying distant from the games instead of butchering them. Nicholai was supposed to be a total bad-ass. Hell, Nemesis even saved Alice in the movie.
Rhys @ Jul 4th 2006 8:37PM
I liked RE1 and RE2 - I'm actually looking forward to RE3.
James K @ Jul 4th 2006 8:47PM
Why can't you people handle a little grammar humor?
As far as the zombie genre goes: Zombies aren't real. So you can do whatever you want with them and as long as they shamble and aren't too bright, they're still zombies. Writers shouldn't be beholden to what Romero did to zombies-- after all, he just revised what other movies did with the monster and made it his own.
Paul WS Anderson kind of sucks, though, so I'd rather he not get near zombies, much less write stories about them.
obo @ Jul 4th 2006 10:10PM
no wai, it's a movie about colon health featuring milla jovovich's ass
who wouldn't want to see that
Edge of Blade @ Jul 4th 2006 10:37PM
Forgive the horrible joke in advance.
My opinion of the Resident Evil movies is more in line with Resident Evil Colon Irrigation.
illspirit @ Jul 5th 2006 12:09AM
"Writers shouldn't be beholden to what Romero did to zombies-- after all, he just revised what other movies did with the monster and made it his own."
Two problems with that argument.
1: The movie we were talking about following the Romero rules, Land of the Dead, was made by Romero. So of course he's going to follow his own rules. ;)
2: Night of the Living Dead *was* the first (undead) zombie movie. The only zombies in cinema before that were of the living, mind-controlled, Voodoo-based variety. Not saying anyone has to follow his rules, mind you, just saying nobody can tell him he's wrong...
And yes, Danno, Bub was indeed the man (or would that be unman?). No idea what a Midichlorian is though.
FSK405K @ Jul 5th 2006 12:21AM
Am I the only person who greatly enjoyed the first movie for its tension and mystery but thought the second was a misadapted boring frag-fest with no real suspense? Also, the teaser for Apocalypse, the one that starts out like a beauty product commercial, kicks so much ass that I still have a copy of it.
dan @ Jul 5th 2006 12:31AM
26 - You know I thought pretty much exactly the same thing. The first RE actually had a lot going for it in terms of suspense and storytelling, the second was just a dull march through a sequence of events that felt loosely if at all connected.
FSK405K @ Jul 5th 2006 12:34AM
BTW Joystiq, please do not use the phrase "to be buried in desert" like you did. Because of the Atari-ness of the reference, I thought you meant the movie had been cancelled and all drafts, props, and film of it were to be destroyed.
Oh, and for those of you interested in the beauty from film 2, she's British actress Sienna Guillory, and she's normally blonde. You probably saw her in Love Actually or briefly as the girlfriend in HG Wells' The Time Machine.
Granite @ Jul 5th 2006 12:39AM
Frankly, I consider Paul WS Anderson to be an absolutely terrible director. The Mortal Kombat films were even cheesier than old Jackie Chan films (which are extremely corny, by the way).
The first movie was abysmal...and the stupid laser grid carried over into Resident Evil 4 (the game).
The second movie was embarassing. Basically, the entire Ashford family was made into a pathetic, snivelling joke; Jill Valentine was a fool...an absolute fool; Alice should not have powers...in fact, she should be dead; and Nemesis was a mindless killing machine. In the game, Nemesis had to be killed by being dumped in chemicals, shot with a giant rail gun, and nuked. Nemesis was awesome in the game. In the movie, he was a loser.
wii the people @ Jul 5th 2006 1:07AM
Just in case you haven't seen any other movies ever and think that the previous RE movies were good by lack of comparison (i.e. They were the first two movies that you ever saw in your life and let's face it that's the only way they could have been considered even halfway decent and even then that's a huge stretch) they were quite possibly the two worst movies ever made. The only really good zombie movies were the remake of Dawn of the Dead and 28 days later. And please, spare me the Romero references. Older isn't necessarily better, sometimes it's just dated. Land of the Dead sucked. If you have to verbally fellate Romero do it somewhere else.
FSK405K @ Jul 5th 2006 1:50AM
Three movies that really, really should have been god-awful, but, for whatever Russian roulette purposes, turned out to be quite a lot of fun, to the point where I will show them to friends:
3. Zoolander
2. Starship Troopers
1. Resident Evil [1]
Notice that two of them feature Milla Jovovich.
kromekoran @ Jul 5th 2006 2:09AM
6. "Milla is a fab acctress and bought the rights to the film adaptaions but I guess she doesn't excerise that much creative control in the area of who directs the film."
Milla is dating Paul WS Anderson. didn't know she owned the rights though.
jb @ Jul 5th 2006 3:55AM
suck...suck and more suck...the first two films are trash and this one will be too...they blew it when they dropped Romero from the first one...If you've ever seen the script for his version it would've been waaaay better....hell..his Biohazard 2 commercial was better than those pieces of junk...without Romero, there would never have been RE it's that simple....instead we get a nice shiny Hollywood turd...if everyone would think with the right head and not pay to see these things then maybe they'd try a little harder...at least Silent Hill was reasonably close to the game except for some changes...but it at least made me feel like the game did when I played it, so it's not like it can't be done
GSI @ Jul 5th 2006 4:45AM
"(RE 1 & 2) they were quite possibly the two worst movies ever made."
Hardly...they weren't even close to be the worst movies ever made. There are plenty of other movies that are just plain crap and a waste of time.
As for good zombie movies...you forgot to add "Shaun of the Dead." That movie took the whole zombie thing to a different angle and gave it a dark comedy feel (something that makes sense since IT IS about walking dead people.)
Joe @ Jul 5th 2006 5:09AM
This is going to be a pretty bad movie. How do we get from masses of people scared in a city that got nuked to a *trailer voice* post apocalyptic world where nothing is as it seems. That, and the burying landmarks has already been done by everyone's favourite blockbuster; The Day After Tomorrow.
Max Howell @ Jul 5th 2006 9:32AM
FSK405K, I'm totally with you. The first film was brilliant, I loved the building tension and the gradual unveiling of the main character's part in the story. The "super-zombie" sucked though.
The second film though, was absolute pap. I laughed out loud when everyone in the church was on the verge of being eaten by zombos and then Mila came through the 20 meter high stained glass windows riding a motorbike! Like FFS, how cliched and ridiculous can you get?!
I'm hoping that since the director of the first one is doing the new one it'll be something similar, but I have no faith since Hollywood is pulling the strings this time again.
I also thought the Dawn of the Dead remake was awesome. I have recently seen the original and I thought it was terrible and frankly, boring. The remake was full of tension, far more interesting chracters, and far more "horror". The zombies in the first one couldn't catch you unless you were a tortoise. How is that scary?
sam @ Jul 5th 2006 11:53AM
I liked the Resident Evil movies. :-( Sure they weren't Cineast Classics, but who cares? Good popcorn flicks, and my girlfirend, who hates horror movies, will actually watch these with me. Guns, zombies, kick-ass chicks (why has no one mentioned Michellle Rodriguez?!) and plenty of camp. So, it's not faithful to the games. Whatever. If you had a faithful Resident Evil movie, it would be boring as hell, not to mention confusing.
dsub @ Jul 5th 2006 12:05PM
RE5 trailer depcits a game that takes place in the desert.
RE:Extinction takes place in the desert.
Coincidence?
SilverStar @ Jul 5th 2006 12:21PM
How about they turn this into a movie that tries to borrow from the Re-Animator series of movies and stories, and make it about a college student who has a roommate who's learning to be a rectal surgeon? Then they'd be able to make it a BETTER movie and keep the name mostly the same. Resident: Evil Colon Extinction. :D
Kevin @ Jul 5th 2006 1:53PM
Jill Valentine dies in this movie according to a script review. That alone is reason enough I will NOT watch this movie. And apparently there's a cliffhanger where Claire finds a new clue as to where Chris is, setting up the fourth movie to be about her and her search, so I'll wait for that, as hopefully it'll truncate all these movie only characters.
There you go people, now you have no reason to watch this movie.
Miharu @ Jul 5th 2006 2:41PM
I loved Dawn of The Dead remake, hated Land of The Dead. Loved first Resident Evil, laughed at the second one. But the second one did have a good ending!
jgurka @ Jul 5th 2006 3:11PM
Max Howell: The original Day of the Dead was supposed to be scary not because they were fast and extremely savage/wild like those in the remake, but because of their numbers. You can run all you want, but eventually there will be too many for you to run from.
tenno @ Jul 5th 2006 3:21PM
=( I live in Vegas and even if everyone died, the desert wouldnt bury us, we dont even really have sand dunes. It'd be more likely to turn into the desert oasis meadow it was originally. Vegas with dunes would require nukes blowing up all the mountains.
The first RE was alright, not great but it had some neat moments and an almost good story. The second RE was complete and utter BS action movie crap but stiff campy enough for a good laugh. I dunno what the third will be like, Milla gains all these powers over computers but is now stuck in a desert apocalypse where they're useless? =
They may as well just make the 4th one in space and follow the standard horror movie cliche. Why the hell does she keep gaining power anyways? The horror of RE has always been about creatures that are impossible to kill with limited ammo and instead she's sailing around on a motorbike, pulling shit Vin Diesel wouldnt heasitate to laugh at.
Still better than the DOOM movie though.
Shane-o-mac @ Jul 5th 2006 7:03PM
is it just me, or is just about every movie that Milla Jovovich is in, shes some type of super human badass? Resident evil 2 disappointed me with this and, tho being a huge fan or RE, im not lookin too much forward to the 3rd movie. The RE games were fun because you were a normal person running away and slaying the undead....with weapons of mass destruction??? Why ruin that with something as stupid as "super human abilities" Can anyone say "overkill"....overkill can be nice in the right situations tho. There werent enough zombies in the 2nd movies ,but Ill still watch it as long as its not as bad as "The hills have eyes" ....im mean seriously has anyone seen that movie?
Brad Lee @ Jul 5th 2006 7:59PM
I thought the first Resident Evil movie was okay, even if it was just an excuse for blood, guts, and killing. But, RE2 was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only positive I can name is that the movie was so terrible I thought it was kinda funny. I don't understand why they didn't just go with the story from RE2 the game, because it was actually kinda frightening. I can see why they didn't use the story from the first one ("Jill, why don't you, the master of lockpicking, take this lockpick"), but the second game was pretty good. The third one kinda sucked too (STAAAARS), but even that would have been better than the shitpile that was RE: Apacolypse.
That said I don't think I'm even gonna bother watching three, especially after the 'psychic powers' or whatever the hell that was that Alice gained at the end of two. That was just so ridiculously retarded.
Brad Lee @ Jul 5th 2006 8:17PM
Actually, I take that back, I'll probably watch RE3 just to see how terrible it is. Currently, the worst movie I have ever seen is Bloodrayne, but I think RE3 may be destined to take its place.
As for other zombie movies, I personally thought 28 Days Later was the best zombie movie ever made. Funny enough though, some people absolutely despise that movie. I don't see why, sure it was a little slow in the middle for being a horror movie, but at least it had a fairly intelligent plot (despite the fact that the virus would probably spread all around the world in 24 hours as opposed to just in England in 28 days, but meh thats movies for you). I also thought it had good directing. Though the ending sucked, it would have been better if everybody just died or something. I mean, why would a movie about an apacolypse end happily?
I thought the Dawn of the Dead remake was pretty good too, and Land of the Dead was awful. The only good scene was when the black zombie leader guy picked up a gun and started shooting people. That was hilarious.
GSI @ Jul 5th 2006 10:59PM
I'd also like to add that I thought '28 Days Later' was pretty good as well.
Komrade Kayce @ Jul 6th 2006 2:03PM
Normally, Im not one to just randomly flame.
BUT WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH YOU PEOPLE SAYING THE FIRST TWO MOVIES WERE GOOD?
Given, if the first one wasn't watched as a 'Resident Evil' movie, it was watchable. It was possibly even decent.
But the second was a mishmash of goddawful acting and pointlessness. It would be one thing if it was a bmovie attempt, then it would be pretty enjoyable to watch. Like the original dawn of the dead for all its sillyness. But it was an obvious peice of fanbase driven crap. If it wasnt for the RE name, it would have earned next to nothing once word got around how bad it was.
I am NOT looking forward to RE 3 by this man. They should give the movies to the Raimi brothers or Romero, Capcom should seriously yank their license away from this man.
There is only one person whom I place on a lower scale than Anderson in terms of way to ruin my dreams of good adaptations. Uwe Boll. Andersons films look good and act cheap, while bolls films look cheap and are cheap.
GSI @ Jul 7th 2006 2:20AM
"BUT WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH YOU PEOPLE SAYING THE FIRST TWO MOVIES WERE GOOD?"
It's called an "opinion"...and if you can't accept that without sounding like a little kid then maybe you should just stop posting.
Micah @ Jul 7th 2006 4:56AM
I, personally, liked the first two movies. Of course, I've never been a big fan of the games (couldn't get past the control schem of the one that I played, think it was Code Veronica or something...). As long as Halle Berry isn't in it, I'll see it. Maybe not in the theater though, that's far too expensive these days. I'll just buy the DVD, it'll be cheaper that way.
