Portugal wins virtual World Cup
With Portugal facing off against France at 3:00 p.m. EST today, they can at least hit the field knowing their virtual counterparts went all the way. A team from Portugal took the gold in the Xbox Cup, an online tournament using 2006 Fifa World Cup as the medium. The team faced off against Mexico a few hours prior to the England-Portugal match that ended with Portugal's victory in a 3-1 penalty shootout. In the virtual World Cup, Portugal beat Mexico 2-1. Ironically, Germany had been eliminated by Mexico in extra time, similar to its final defeat in the actual World Cup.
Peter Moore presented the trophy to the team, 28-year-old Miguel Angelo Dinis and 21-year-old Antonio Luis Ferreira Gomes. While on hand, Moore also gave props to his console of choice, opining that "seeing the matches being played out on the Xbox 360 has been nearly as good as watching a real football match!" Mr. Moore, I think you need a corroborator on that one, so feel free to fly me to Germany for the final two games of the 2006 World Cup.

good riddance to the divingest team in the tournament. ronaldo's a whining simp.

Poor-tugal :(

Here here Matt, Portugal deserve a Daytime Emmy for the performances they've been pulling so far. Nice to see France win and the French fans booing Ronaldo for his part in the Rooney send off against England. France have finally woken up in the last two games, I guess it needs a run in with Brazil to shake it out of them. I think Zidane has earned another World Cup for his retirement, unlike filthy Figo. Allez les bleu!
As for watching it being played on the Xbox being like watching the real thing, I guess that's true if football was played by plastic mannequins who can't chase a ball a few feet from them but will run long passes right out of bounds, while France go out in the first round and USA go on to win the whole thing. Didn't EA's World Cup simulation have Czech Republic winning the whole thing, and IGNs play throughs have been pretty consistently wrong (probably more due to the people involved being a bit rubbish in that case). Nice one, Peter.

Does the xbox360 accurately convey the cheating and flouncy diving of the portugese? I don't think even the xbox360 could handle that sort of load.
Ps Z, Amen to Pro Evo, but maybe Fifa is prettier to watch as a bystander. If you play soccer though (as do I) Pro Evo/Winning Eleven just feels so much more right. Moore is completely wrong, no console football is anywhere near as good as going to a live match. I would have given anything to see the Germany/Italy Semi live!

So much for digital simlulated accuracy. Forza Italia.

Are english has big sore loosers in the virtual world has in the real world? Are they so arrogant, hypocritical, and xenophobic has they showed in the wc? Does their team actualy have 50% of the talent they always think they have? Do they start hate campaigns against players and referees? Can they ever beat portugal in a field without robbing like in 1966? Can they score penaltys?
