Carlos, your message about how Sony has claimed fame & financial gain that rightfuly belonged to Andreas Pavel is very valid. I found your post very interesting.

For those who missed it....

Andreas Pavel (born in 1945) is a German inventor who is the 'father' of the portable personal stereo cassette player, better known as the Walkman. Pavel invented his device, the stereobelt, in 1972, and over the next few years, tried to interest companies like Grundig, Philips, and Yamaha in manufacturing it. In 1977, Pavel filed a patent in Italy on the device, followed by patents in the United States, Germany, England, and Japan.

In 1979, Sony began selling the popular Walkman, and in 1980 started legal talks with Pavel regarding a royalty fee. In 1986 Sony finally agreed to pay royalties to Pavel, but only for sales in Germany, and only for a few models, and refused to acknowledge him as the inventor of the device.

In 1989, Andreas Pavel started new proceedings, this time going through the law courts in the UK. Seven years later, the case was dismissed and Pavel was left with $3.6 million dollars worth court costs to pay. Then in 2001, Pavel threatened Sony with legal suits in every country in which he had patented his invention. The corporation agreed to resume talks with Pavel and a settlement was finally reached in 2003.

The exact settlement fee is a closely guarded secret but European press accounts said that Pavel received a cash settlement for damages in excess of $10,000,000 and is now also receiving royalties on some Walkman sales. The settlement also includes a clause which will prevent Pavel from bringing future law suits. The settlement grants Pavel the recognition from Sony that he was the original inventor of the Walkman; this apparently could only be achieved after the death of Akio Morita, the founder of Sony and previously-recognised creator of the personal stereo.

Sony is getting wat they deserve!!!!!!!!!!! end of discussion

Just currious what were the last few games where you really felt rumble added something to the game. I dont care what console it was.

Silent Hill Serie
Metal Gear
Resident Evil
Indigo Prophecy

Thats pretty much it for me.
Compared to the number of games i own/play it seems more a hindarence/annoyance.
All tho I will miss it in those games... I have a lot of faith that the developers will make a serious effort to use what ever is avaliable to not ruin the experience.

My 2 cents

Immersions patent is specific. Saying it isn't is a lie. It specifically relates to using two motorised cams (a spinning weight where the center of gravity is not the axle). I've read the patent document.

Nintendo in the past have used a single weight that swings side to side, hence not being part of the law suit. Immersion don't know how the rumble works in the Wiimote because they don't have one, and they're going to check that it isn't infringing on any of their patents.

Right now I bet it isn't. Patents, if you haven't been following, were created to protect small companies that innovate from big companies stealing and mass producing their innovations. Immersion have poured millions into researching haptic devices (their products go way beyond rumble in controllers) and they are the smaller company.

Anyway, they aren't going to go out of business if they can't put rumble in the ps3 controllers. they didn't put rumble in the ps one or ps2 controllers either.

Immersion partner with Logitech and many other 3rd party pad makers, as well as on the first party MS pads.

Not everyone is going to miss rumble... i know i won't... but i have friends that stuck with their wired cube pads for rumble when me and others went onto wireless wave birds.

its not going to stop me picking up a ps3 in a year or two, but that said, i'd prefer to have it than not and i think anyone saying other wise is lying.

KawF:
You are wrong. the wii mote has rumble ALL THE TIME.
"The combination of the controller rumble, the audio feedback from the built-in controller speaker and the motion controls create something really special here. Nintendo's shown without doubt that the control setup enhances many of the actions performed in Link's world, but thankfully also exercised restraint and didn't overthrow everything we've become accustomed to over the years just for the sake of showing off the controller."-taken from ign the legend of zelda: twilight princess hands on preview

there is no reason for the lack of rumble in the ps3 controller. they lied, forced feedback and wireless motion control is possible and has already been implemented in the wii controller.
btw talking out of your ass is the leading cause of bad breath.

Sony is lying, it is completely possible to use vibration and motion sensing in the same unit. Immersion offered to solve that problem. Wii will have motion sensing and rumble.

However, Immersion is being gay. I took the poll, and answered the loaded questions with loaded BS in return. What will immersion do? Wait for sony to pay up if gamers really want rumble.

I ask u this: the company that spearheaded betamax, blu-ray, walkman, etc. Do u think they can't come up with a way to create their own rumble without infringing patents?

Yes they can, will they? I doubt it, because the electronics market takes a while for comapnies to attack competitors directly. We will see the feature in a year or two.

Those of u who need rumble, 3rd party controllers for the ps3 will have rumble, immersion granted license to a company to do so.

there u go.

screw u immersion. screw u sony.

One thing that I have always wished in regards to rumble function, is the ability to determine status without any onscreen queues.

Consider this... In an action title like God of War you can determine the amount of damamge that you have received from the impact registered through the rumble function, queue this with the heartbeat sound queue and I very rarely look to my Health Bar to determine if I am in serious trouble. If used more regularly, many the "static" status bars on screen, that take away from the immersion in gaming, could be eliminated.
