GameSpot's Matt Rorie has a quirky new video feature to help gamers fight some of the tougher bosses as of late. Filmed in a film noir style,
Matt Rorie: Boss of Bosses has the guides editor in a role akin to a private detective. Bad acting and cheesy dialogue ensue, but the video tips are helpful. Here are the four cases he tackles first:
- Beret today, gone tomorrow: Rorie takes on Krauser from Resident Evil 4. Personally, I would have used only the knife during the first phase (it's very effective and saves on ammo).
- Death Wind and Fire: Agni and Rudra from Devil May Cry 3.
- Pretty in Pink: Alma from the insanely difficult Ninja Gaiden.
- This is the End: "The End" from Metal Gear Solid 3.
Kudos to GameSpot for making an interesting little feature. You can stream the entire 23-minute presentation for free, download a low-resolution with a free registration, or get the 1.2GB HD-quality video with a Premium GameSpot account.

The End was truly an amazing experience that I hope everyone that plays games has the chance to play.
P.S. It took me 2 1/2 hours to beat him...
P.P.S It was fun the whole time...

Yeah, The End was a great boss. I spent around 2 hours on him. It was a little frustrating at points, but it was one of the better bosses I've played in a videogame. Around 20 minutes of those 2 hours was spent in the shower--I had to take a break. :D
That lens flare trick probably would've helped me a lot. Most of my time I was just running around getting shot.

I beat Krauser using only the knife and the pistol. He's such a ridiculously easy boss, I can't understand how anyone could have trouble with him. Kneecap, knife, rinse, repeat.

I thought it was amusing, but it chose a relatively simple boss from Ninja Gaiden Black. I know she can be quite hard the first few times you fight her, but she is quite managable once you know her moves. What he should have done is play the mission (in Ninja Gaiden Black) with Alma and Nichae (yes, two bosses at once). If you don't know Nichae, she's a lightning fast demon that has a whip for a hand.
And Krauser was so easy that I don't think he should have been there. Maybe Salazar should have been hilited (sp?).
Belcho @ Jul 7th 2006 7:33PM
Alma wasn't that hard. Personally I think that the dude on the horse at the end of level 2 on Ninja Gaiden was the hardest. And Marai at the end of level 1 was hard too. It took me forever to beat those guys. I figure this is where a lot of people gave up. Although Alma was a sweet, beautiful looking fight.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Ninja Gaiden is the best game on the box.
Just please oh PLEASE don't make me buy a PS3 to play Ninja Gaiden 2! That game is a console seller (for me anyway).
icemorebutts @ Jul 7th 2006 7:40PM
The End took you 2 hours to beat? It took me 20 minutes on regular difficulty and I only used the Mk22. You don't even have to fight him if you shoot him with the sniper rifle in front of the warehouse, or 1 second if you save during the fight and put the ps2's clock like, a week ahead, and he dies of natural causes. Just that boss fight was enought to make snake eater the best on the ps2.
LongshotX @ Jul 7th 2006 8:36PM
I thought the final Boss in Ikaruga was pretty damn hard. I died several hundred times before I was able to beat the darn thing. Radiant Silverguns boss wasn't easy either.
junkie @ Jul 7th 2006 8:38PM
yeah, The End was easy. His feet showed up with the infrared, you could tell when he was sleeping with the mic, his Parrot that alerted him could be trapped at the very beginning of the boss fight. The best part about the end was killing him with the tranq gun - you got his camo that regenerates health.
Zero_ @ Jul 7th 2006 9:36PM
I defeated the end in about 30 minutes, and it was pretty easy, but I can understand where everyone is coming from. I managed to actually sneak up behind The End, but instead of holding him up to get his stealth camoflauge, I just pulled out the shotgun (Which I think is the Mk22) and blasted him, when he got up, blasted him again, and again, and again. ENDOWNED!

Alma was definitely hard, especially on Master Ninja. I actually had a problem with my first Xbox, and I wouldn't replace it because I had a saved game right after I defeated Alma. Personally, though, I think Istaros was a much harder boss, although I imagine few have ever seen her as she was only in Ninja Gaiden Black and she appeared for the first time in Very Hard Mode on Chapter 15 - The Core. Damn, that was a tough fight... especially after "turbo" Alma.
Oh - Belcho - I certainly agree. I am not a Sony fan at all. In fact after living in Japan for two years I have officially stopped buying any Sony product, but if NG2 came out as a PS3 exclusive... I'd have to buy it. NGB is the best game I've ever played... since the 2600.

The Greater Fiend Doku was a piece of cake. Ghost version and the alive one. The last boss was hard, but only because I had to beat him with only one item, the Talisman of Rebirth. Alma was one hard boss, however. Took me ages to beat her. The second version wasn't too hard, however. Wait...there WAS a second version, right? Memory a bit cloudy, I hope my friend returs me Ninja Gaiden (thats two games not returned from two different friends, consarn it!). The Worm bosses were pretty hard too, especially the dual electric worms.
I wish my PS2 wasn't dead, so I could play all 3 above games. Well, most are coming to PC anyway! And theres always hope for MGS3 on Xbox...a tiny shimmer of hope...
Dylan @ Jul 8th 2006 6:51AM
The End seems pretty overrated to me. The fight was pretty cool and original, but not as "Epic" as everybody acts like, there are so many alternate ways to kill him, Im not real sure if there is one way youre "supposed" to do, much less figure out which way everybody is talking about when they talk about fighting him.
MassiveShock @ Jul 8th 2006 6:57AM
Agni and Rudra from DMC3 was really not that hard. But Alma from Ninja Gaiden is really the hardest of all, I have to stock up on a lot of health potions and talismans. Krauser from RE4 was easy, shoot him on the knees and fire a rocket launcher on his face. I never played MGS3 yet, I'm looking forward to play against the END.
that guy @ Jul 8th 2006 9:18AM
I thought the final boss in Pikmin 2 was pretty tough to beat, but maybe that's me. Great, epic battle though.
And Belcho, I'll have to disagree with you there on the best game on the Xbox - my vote goes to The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay ;)
To each their own though!
kelekod @ Jul 8th 2006 9:46AM
I think all the Metriod bosses are hard. I try several times then I just give up. I have like 100% complete for items in both Prime 1 and 2, and close to 100% in Hunters. Can't manage to beat any of those games. Prime 1 I got super close on the last form, don't remember prime 2's boss much. And well the one in hunter hurts may hands playing for an hour when he takes like no damage and keeps recharging his health. one time i did make it to the second form but i had like 39 energy left, didn' t last long...
What happened to the easy pattern/dodge bosses? like Contra? why do they need like 50 forms and a super huge health bar for each form?
idioteraser @ Jul 8th 2006 1:08PM
There are two forms to the end boss in hunters. The second one you have to unlock in the room then defeat the boss.
They do have a pattern to their attacks and you can dodge them. It took me three times to beat the Hunters boss and twice to beat the second form.
When you damage the hunter boss fire at his arm joints when they reform. Also if you hit the orb with say the Sniper Rifle you do a lot of damage to him. It's all about quick weapon selection and the first boss from can be dodged if you recognize what weapon he uses due to his color change.
kelekod @ Jul 8th 2006 1:32PM
Yea i played that boss for 3 hours (3 tries) and that's way too long for each try. I just circle around the outside of the room, and when he's blue he always nails me. a few times he hits me as green or yellow usually when i have to stop for a second to crack my knuckles or i get stuck in some groove i manage to find. I just circle the outside firing at him switching weapons and doesn't seem to do any damage whatsoever. when he hangs from the ceiling i can stop and nail him with the red weapon. i thought i beat him once and it went to another room. i don't know how i woulda unlocked it as I don't try to get help in a game. I've beaten the first 3 metriods, its these last 3 that are tough. I suspect Corruption I will reach the boss and probably won't beat him either.
Another boss I'd like to see is Dr. Wily from Megaman 4, I only remember beating him a few times.
The worst games are the ones you can reach the final bosses very easily without much effort, then have to sit through 2-10 forms of it and the difficulty level suddenly jumps 1000 points from getting to it. If the boss is gonna be that hard, there should be more effort to get there.
Hart704 @ Jul 8th 2006 1:56PM
hard bosses for hard games
Jon @ Jul 9th 2006 9:31AM
You know, I only recently completed Resident Evil 4... and when I faced Krauser, for more than two thirds of the fight I only had my trusty knife. Now that was pretty darn tough!
Yuki~Summer Ver.~ @ Jul 9th 2006 11:28PM
Eh, during the Alma battle he used the phrase "massive damage".
