Intense first Pokemon Diamond/Pearl footage: walking around
27
No, it's not the most amazing of clips. Still, we get to see the new pseudo-3D art style and hear a bitchin' remix of a traditional Pokemon fanfare. Nintendo has been relatively tight-lipped about its sure-to-sell-a-million-units franchise, but Pokemon Diamond and Pearl are well on their way to becoming yet another triple-A DS title. There are a lot of those, these days.
[Thanks, Dwarpdesign!]

Ok, so you DO like Youtube. Maybe you just dont want to post DS-related Youtube videos, such as the homebrew DS camara or the Megaman ZN video clip?
I cant wait for Diamond/Pearl. Its a shame Japan gets it for around 6 months before it hits U.S. Shores. Is it confirmed that this game will have online battles? Because it better have them! At least!

Japan always gets Pokemon games way before us, but I don't mind this time cause I won't have any money left over from the Wii.

I personally am looking forward to Pokemon Ranger. I've had enough of these particular sequels. The franchise lost it's magic after Gold and Silver.
Perhaps the thought of adding 100 new little bastards to catch for every game got annoying to me.

I used to be crazy about pokemon in the red/blue, and silver/gold era. Silver and Gold were the games at the peak I think. I tried playing Emerald, but I couldn't get into it. I don't know if it's just that I've grown out of it....but the new games don't really capture the magic anymore. Here's hoping these games step up.
Oh, and I hope you can customise your character, I don't like the look of that towel on his/her head....:P

marc, Gold and Silver were imo the worst of the whole franchise. leaf green and fire red, the remakes of the original red and green (and blue), were some well made, solid games, you cant just go around plugging in the original Blue version (which i bought twice) into a DS, but Leaf Green is definately worth it :)
Graphics look good tho, i guess. Maybe the next series will be FF3-ish?

Phil, the graphic look ok, but they are just a slight step up from RSE in my opinion. Compare them to AC on the DS and you will find them somewhat lacking.
And 4 way movement? Now I am dissapointed. But Online is confirmed so no doubts about me getting it.

No, no no no no! Gold and Silver were by far the best in the series. At first, when i read reviews, i was amazed that Ruby/Sappire were 'worse' then Gold/Silver, but when i played Gold again, it made alot of sense. In Ruby, they got rid of Day and Night, there were only 8 Gym Leaders, whereas in G/S you could also go back betweeen the G/S world of Janto (or whatever it was called) and Kanto from Red/ Blue to fight 16 gym leaders, and there were just loads of stuff that R/S was missing. To be honest, there were only a few new things in R/S eg. Secret homes and good graphics, thats about it.

BTW, i know the 4-way grid movment seems a little old, but remember in the old games that most of the puzzles were based around that system?
And the graphics are OK i guess, it definatly ooks better then RSE, but nothing near AC standerds, asMurphy said.
I can only hope that some of the cool stuff from GS returns, plus they actully add NEW ORIGANAL stuf too.

If by "cool stuff", you mean "day/night", it's been confirmed as back for quite some time.
Besides that, we've also got confirmed interoperability with Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red and Leaf Green. Given that Emerald, Fire Red and Leaf Green were able to recieve tickets at PokéPark in Nagoya when plugged into a DS, just as if they had a GBA with the wireless adaptor, it's quite likely that you'll even be able to have battles with the old games as well, rather than just trade Pokémon and items between the versions.

Guys you need to remember that tehre are going to be almost 500 pokemon now, and it ahs been confirmd that male and female versions actually have diffrent sprites. Im sorry, but they wouldnt be able to fit that on a DS cart if they used 3d graphics.
And for me pokemon has always been about multiplayer, so I dont wory to much about the story mode. but it being online, and teh fact it can download pokes from the gba games through the GBA slot makes this a must buy for me

phil,
since when do you think it's O.K. to tell someone that their opinion is wrong? I liked Gold and Silver and many people can agree with me. The remakes titled Fire Red and Leaf Green were bad on my part. Why would I want a remake of a game that I already own? Just cuz it's in a GBA cartridge won't make me spend 30 bucks on it.

When did he say your opinion 'was wrong'? He just said "i.m.o." at the beginning of his post and disagreed.

DS Cards are flash memory based, which really wouldn't have limitations. They could do 3d if they wanted, it is just lazy.

How funny would that be!

In regards to not being 3D:
You've got to also think about the work it entails. Would you rather have a shorter, sloppier 3D title or a 2D title that's longer, more balanced, and can have more features (like online play) because all the work and budget wasn't blown on bringing it to 3D? Pokemon Col. and XD weren't that great, I'm glad this game will be 2D.
Though, arguably, they could've used the Animal Crossing engine...

So ho many billion dollar franchise rpgs have you made?
Im Talking about how much information a DS cart can hold. You do know that 3d models take up a space. now multiply that by 500, and then maybe add 450 more because the each gender has a diffrent look, and thats 950 models give or take, plus you got all the other overworld models for buildings, characters and so on. then add in the game engine and sound files. oh and add in the diffrent skins for the shiny pokemon
thats to much for a ds chart to handle, not to mention how many resources and time that would take to create.
So why dont you get your lazy but in motion and make a game that massive.

No need to attack me is there Exo. I'm not saying that I wanted a game like colo or XD, as there 3d look sucked balls. I'm saying I wanted something better than this. When the inevitable Wii RPG which is being made comes out, will you be happy that it looks like the previous generations games because of storage issues? I'm sure the style could have been a bit more advance, that's all I'm saying.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but at the end of the video when the character leaves town it says 219 which might be the route number. If this is the route number this game will be huge!

Disappointing video due to lack of revealed stuff but hey! It still makes me want the game all that more :). Anyway, does anyone know where I can obtain the non-YouTube video of this?

Well, I dunno how "pseudo" 3D it is; if you watch the buildings you can see that they are 3D (at least, based on what you can tell from the video). I say this because you can see the side of the houses slowly disappearing as the camera moves above them. Now, I couldn't notice the same with the trees, but I didn't try that hard, so who knows. :D

"Psuedo" 3D as in, the buildings (and I think the rock formations at the end of the video) are in 3D, but the characters are 2D sprites. As for the trees, I think they're 2D sprites, as are common for trees in 3D games (as in Animal Crossing, and even Mario 64), but they are sprites placed in 3D space, so they appear to get closer together as they move away from the camera, etc.
I agree that RSE was, in many ways, a step back for the series. Only including 60 or so of the previous 251 Pokemon was kinda weird...as was getting rid of the day/night cycle, and not featuring the previous areas.
Two things puzzle me about Pokemon as of late:
1) Why is Diamond and Pearl taking so long to come out? I know it's weird to complain about Pokemon games not coming out enough, but it's going to be 2007 before we see it in America. The DS came out in 2004. That's a long gap.
2) Why wasn't the FireRed/LeafGreen remakes on the DS? They'd be able to be more different from the originals (they could be in 3D and all that), and it'd be a way for the DS to not have a "real" Pokemon game, since the DS isn't a "real" Game Boy. (Although now I'm thinking we'll never see a new handheld with the "Game Boy" name again.)
