Awesomely fake GTA 4 pic

What is it with wannabe Internet celebs circulating fake pictures of games and hardware? Do they need attention that bad? The latest hot target of illegitimate screen grabs seems to be Grand Theft Auto 4. Last month we saw a little GTA 4 fakeness nugget complete with urinating dog and visions of gore from a ball and chain weapon. Now, we got this one above from a GTA 4 forum.
It's like they're not even trying anymore. There's not much to see in this "screenshot," but notice the Rockstar North "official" lettering in the bottom left that just cries for legitimacy. Of course, we don't know 100% for sure that this is a fake, but don't hold your breath that it's not.

Idk, at the very end of the road you can't see any further.
A. The PS3 can pull off rendering much further as we've seen in many other games.
B. I don't remember GTA ever having the color of "what you cant see further", if you know what I mean, be white. Normally it just shows the road and sky but removes buildings cars and people..

1.(kleger) horrible perspective? thats funny since no one ever said this was real or if it is real who says its from gameplay and not cgi or intro or something. I dont expect us to see any actual gameplay shots or real videos till after this year. We just just see all those cut scenes or stupid stuff like that which everyone seems to get excited about. Kind of like with the halo 3 trailer. It was the stupidiest thing i ever saw. I think halo 3 will be great but why would I care about some trailer when i want to see gameplay footage? Us gamers need to stop showing these companies so much excitement or a stupid trailer when most of us want to see gameplay. Maybe if we stop caring they actually will start showing off gameplay first.

Something felt strange the moment I saw the above "screenshot." I had a feeling that I've seen this before, since I browse through a lot of 3D artwork on the net (university CG major myself). I was right, first guess - 3D Blasphemy (http://www.3dblasphemy.com)!

Um no, it's definitely CGI. Despite lots of work on the detail of the buildings, look at all the 'humans' who are are the same height/shape and are all in the same step process with their legs astride. You can also pick out the figures too easily in the distance. Also the figure on the left is quite sharp but the car right next to him is much more out of focus.

Repeat after me: you will never, ever see a leaked screenshot of a GTA game. You never have and you never will. Take it right from the (former) horse's mouth - it's been a few years now, but I was part of the marketing machine for the GTA series up through Vice City and I know the penalties for employees who leak GTA info. They include, but are not limited to:
a) Two (or more) busted kneecaps
b) The slow, painful death of your favorite pet
c) A lawsuit
d) A poor job recommendation
Any alleged screenshot posted on a non-Rockstar site before it appears on a Rockstar site is a fake screenshot. This is a 100% universal truth.

That image isn't real. It's CG made by the guy who runs 3DBlasphemy.com. How would anyone question that? It's on his site (with no mention of GTA) and Vince said he's seen it before.
Personally, I think images like the ones Marcelo Vega and TC posted deserve mention on Joystiq, since they're obviously joking. But if someone blatently lies to get traffic, they're given more screen time. Doesn't make any sense to me.

The tip-off for me is the copyright line at the bottom left that says, "Development Screenshot 2006." But, as far as graphics go, if only this was possible with the 360 or PS3 hardware... it's a sad fact that neither console could pull this off and we have to wait for the next frickin' generation to get something that looks this pretty.

the people that are saying it's not going to look good obviously don't know about them using the Table Tennis engine....sorry to dissapoint you, but this game will probably look incredible.

They are using the Table Tennis engine (RAGE, I think it's called), but there's a hell of a lot more to render in GTA than the relatively empty ping-pong halls.
It'll look significantly nicer than the GTA3 engine, but don't expect it to look like Table Tennis. I'm sure it'll still be behind the rest of the games in the visuals department. I said venture to say something on par with the nicer looking XBOX titles.
