The ad is global marketing because it jumped to the Net, which extended its reach. Thus, people have a right to discuss it, as well as respond as consumer to buy-or-not-buy.

On-going racism is about hurting others because of something they cannot change; leaving them out or rendering them invisible or unimportant; or creating obstacles in their desire to live and succeed.

This ad expresses an oppressive power dynamic that is consistent with both racism and colonialism. The image has an aggressive White woman invading the physical and psychic space of a Black woman, which mirrors historic and current oppression -- physical violence, theft of resources and cultural destruction. All of which was/is justified by defense of racial differences as indications of cultural superiority or inferiority.

There's no removing the ad from the narrative of human relations through time. Each act in the moment either reinforces racism and oppression, or liberates and creates equity across all qualities of humanity.

This ad suggests that Sony condones oppressive relations -- in order to sell a product. It's unlikely they're simply ignorant of the historic narrative.

Very unfortunate attitude and does not speak well of the company. This marketing project made it through all the management approval processes. Who's the diversity director at headquarters? That person has some work to do.

makes you think alright. just not about portable gaming, and thats the problem. if its spreading negative thoughts that are totally irrelevant to your product, then it's a total failure as an ad.

seriously, what is about the content of this ad that would make someone WANT a white PSP (or want it more)?

wouldnt just a nice picture of it next to the black PSPS have the same desired effect?

I'm black and I find it offensive. But more because of the fact that the white woman is grabbing the black woman. The ad, contrary to what some of you think, has nothing to do with the product. And the ‘bad publicity’ quote only refers to actors and actresses, not products that can target any specific group of people. And Anticrawl, I think it's offensive any way you put it. The 'spoof' was just as insulting towards obese people (which make up a large part of videogame players) as the ad would have been if there was a black woman grabbing a white woman's face. Sony could have gone about this in a completely different manner, but they didn't. The other ads have nothing to do with this conversation and neither do other countries. This ad will reach everyone sooner or later. Sony should have been prepared for the possible backlash of the advertisement and made the appropriate altercations. This is what HR is for. Whoever overlooked this needs to be fired (or at least reprimanded). Either way, they made a mistake and the easiest way to fix this would be to apologize and make sure it doesn’t happen – to anyone – again.

--I think the ad would have better if they just had either the black woman or the white woman actually holding the new PSP on a contrasting background. But that would have been too easy.--
