Zelda spinoff RPG to star Tingle, in a 'pink-colored rupee land'
Nintendo has launched the official website (in Japanese) for the upcoming Zelda spinoff, Tingle's Pink-colored Rupee Land, an RPG for DS. Say it with us: Tingle's. Pink-colored. Rupee. Land.Recently, GameSpot shed some light on the title, referring to the game by its Japanese name 'Mogitate Tingle no Barairo Happy Land,' or literally, "A Fresh Tingle's Rose-Colored Happy Land":
"[The] game's plot apparently follows an average middle-aged guy ... [who] finds himself mixed up in a sort of wager. An old man named Rupee-ji ... invites our hero to collect the familiar currency of Hyrule and toss it into the spring. As a result, he opens up a path to the 'Happy Land,' a paradise where wine, women, and song are in ample supply. As soon as he agrees to give it a try, the protagonist is transformed and appears wearing the familiar Tingle outfit."

Why Nintendo?
This is like releasing a spin-off Star Wars movie staring Jar-Jar Binks.

Tingle is a black eye on the Legend of Zelda series.
Some Show @ Jul 11th 2006 3:37PM
Whoa I wonder if Tingle will come to the states.
I hope this game makes fun it's self.
IT would be like a Zelda comedy.
Erik Novak @ Jul 11th 2006 3:40PM
way to shake that kiddy image, Nintendo.
Displacement_Vector @ Jul 11th 2006 3:46PM
This is playing off the strangeness that is the character named Tingle. Tingle basicly is a man who has had a mid life crisis and has dressed up in a green outfit and started selling maps.
This game will probably have some very strange imagery. Me looking forward too.

Screw the DS, I need to feel that Tingle on my Wii!
(sorry, I had to)

Tingle is popular in Japan, apparently. Why, I don't know. IF this game makes it hee, the title will be shorter, I'm sure.

Good, but Im not sure tingle is interested in the women (neither the target group this game aparently is meant to) at all.
Are you sure the current translation wasn't "men"?
BPM? @ Jul 11th 2006 4:01PM
If there is an English release, I hope the name doesn't get changed! It's so ridiculous, it's hilarious!
Originally, I was against the idea of the Tingle RPG, but as more details have surfaced, I'm actually looking foward to it.
Jody Anthony @ Jul 11th 2006 4:04PM
i will buy the game if it comes out here in the US. however, I would preorder and check back every day if they kept the same name. it would be awesome.

I read a very interesting comment a while ago in favor of Tingle. The idea was that Tingle was the Hyrule incarnation of a stereotypical otaku guy (no job, lives with parents, has an obsession [fairies in his case], does weird stuff). He's a satire of all obsessive losers, and so I guess is a cautionary tale. Watch out, or you'll end up like Tingle!
Also, it's worthwhule to note that in Majora's Mask, Green-clothed Tingle remarks that "alas, though I am 35 years of age, no fairy has come to me yet." Notice anything familiar? That's right, he's Link from Ocarina of Time, if the Deku Tree had never sent Navi along. Scary to think what might have been.

LOL. the url does say tincle! Too bad it's for DS, i so wanted to play Tincle on my Wii.

this release just looks awful and amazing. i can't wait to see what it's all about.
I do beleive that the point of Tingle has been lost in the cultural translation, and I am sure he makes mroe sense in Japan. Here he just seems random and annoying.
I am semi-dissapointed at all this cutesiness in the Zelda universe, but whatcha gonna do?
Brian @ Jul 11th 2006 5:12PM
"Tinkle" is Tingle's Japanese name. Changed because... well, come on.
ManekiNeko @ Jul 11th 2006 5:23PM
Tingle Man, Tingle Man... Tingle Man meets DS Man!
When they meet, it's Happy Land... Tingle Man!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
*dies*
The3rdNuisance @ Jul 11th 2006 6:38PM
Thats hilarious, even the people who named it think this games only worth piss. If it can communicate with Legend of Zelda for the Wii, I'll die of laughter... I just want to know, who smelt the fresh red piss that brought them to happy land.
Dylan @ Jul 11th 2006 7:47PM
The world of Majora's Mask was an alternate universe Hyrule, and Tingle is the alternate version of Link, and as Link represents us the player, Tingle represents the alternate, worst possible version of us, the fat, middle aged, manchild otakus who are still spending all our time enjoying games about fairies and princesses.
That said, I like Tingle, I hope this game comes out here, I really don't understand all the extreme hatred towards Tingle, you're not SUPPOSED to think he's cool, that's the point of a satirical character!
George Lucas actually defends the character of Jar-Jar Binks, if they made a spin-off just staring him it would be awful and rediculous. But the makers of Zelda know what Tingle is, he's supposed to be annoying, he's supposed to be creepy, his very existence is poking fun at himself, and they did even more in Wind Waker, and instaed of just agreeing with it, most people had the reaction of "What?! oh my gosh, I never want to see that guy or have anything to do with him!".
Come on, haven't people been playing japanese made videogames long enough to catch on to at least a little of japanese style humor?

Maybe now other people will start liking Tingle. I think I'm one of the three North Americans who do.

This game was clearly made to appeal to a newfound genre of Zelda fans:

Well, now that Tingle has a chance to stand on his own two feet, hopefully: 1, he will stay out of Hyrule, and 2, will fal flat on his face so Nintendo will realize what a terrible idea it was to stick him in The Legend of Zelda.
He destroys a certain fantastical element in the series, and satire or not, does not belong there. He was perfectly at home in the weird world of Termina, but that was a brief foray into another realm. What he was doing in Windwaker...and WHY he had ANYTHING to do with the Triforce of courage is completely beyond me. It doesn't just make no sense...it's a terrible idea.
That said, I'm all in favor of putting him in his own game. That way, I can purchase The Legend of Zelda, and I can NOT purchase Tingle's Rose-Colored Rupee Land (As it is referred to in Nintendo Power). Then Nintendo might figure out how I feel about his inclusion in their greatest series.
