I like Peter Molyneux, but he still does not quite understand why alot of his community was angry with him. No one minds it if a developer is ambitious. What upset us was all the back-stepping and outright dishonesty from his company. Which makes it funny that he mentions Sam Van Tilburgh. (I'm almost certain that isn't really how it's spelled.) Sam is personally responsible for alot of the "hype." Hype and fibs being interchangeable here. Check this out:

The "FAQ" mentioned in the article was somethign that was updated up until the DAY OF RELEASE. However, it said things such as:

"How long will it take me to complete this game?
Fable - including the many side quests and things - will keep you playing for 100+ hours. You will need around 30 hours to complete the main story, if you know your way around, taking the fastest way possible and only speaking to those relevant to the quest. This would mean you didn’t explore the world of Albion, interact with the NPC’s or do anything whatsoever different from what the story requires to complete."

"Can I go anywhere?
There are no 'backgrounds' in Fable, like we’ve seen in many games so far. There are areas you can't get to due to their severe topography, just like the real world. Most of the time you will be walking on roads or secret paths, but you can still wander off if the region allows it! But you won’t find yourself in an area devoid of things to do; the world has been whittled down to remove such areas, ensuring that there is always something to do."

(Of course the FAQ went "Under Revision" a few years ago and hasn't come back since. They even deleted the link to it shortly after it going under revision. Now it's as if it never existed. I wonder why...)

There are tons of other shady things LH has done when it comes to PR. For instance... the IGN hands-on 12 page preview. Originally it was just a nice preview that gave a good hearty thumbs-up. However a few weeks later one of the community members noticed a small change. On page 10 they had IGN add a tiny bit of text stating "you can get married multiple times (but you can't have kids)." This was their way of announcing the cut of one of the more popular features. It's not speculation that they had IGN change this either. Dene (or Simon... can't remember) Carter himself came to the board and admitted it.

Whenever Peter talks about the hype and the mistakes he made, I think it seems he is quite ignorant about the reasoning for the community's anger. Though, more likely than not, he is purposefully ignorant.

Of course, his blanket statement of "Oh, everything was still in development." Does not cover such things as the "Sand Goose" and "Singing Sword" which he mentions on G4 (I think) AFTER release. Sam of course backing him up. Fast forward about half a year and then suddenly neither exist. Why, in fact, if you had been paying attention Sam had mentioned numerous times that those things were never in Fable. So what if numerous users attest to him saying they were in and that's even besides the nickname two adulterers use for eachother. They're just all hysterical.

In any case what it boils down to is that Fable was sold as if it were Oblivion when in fact it was Zelda: Ocarina of Xbox. Sure it may have been more like what they said it was during development, but right up until they sold it to us they never even alluded to it being anything other than the huge free roaming world it was decidedly not. As you can see from Sam's article that they even supressed board speculation that everything they were telling us wasn't true.

If Peter truly wished to make ammends for Fable he would make huge changes to the way his company handles PR and, ideally, make key staff changes. *coughfiresamcough* Though, of course, I haven't seen things handled any differently.
