Thanks for the laugh, Scott. This week, we decided to tone down the filter and just pile on the webcomics to the list. If there's something we missed that is a game-related webcomic strip, let us know. Otherwise, here are our many picks for this week's best gaming webcomic -- be sure to vote for your favorite!
Umm, wow, how can they put Mario in with Madden when referring to milking a series. Mario actually has different games, Mario Party, Mario Basketball, Mario Tennis, Paper Mario, Mario DDR, Dr Mario, etc etc, all have different gameplay mechanics than eachother. Heck, even the 2-D vs 3-D platformers have a totally different feel.
You have to be a real fanboy to bash Nintendo for milking Mario.
That's the EXACT one that should've been in here. Ugh. Clearly this should be in next week because it's by far the best in a while. Nice screw up, Joystiq!
I understand where you're coming from, and rest assured i am not some anti-nintendo fanboy. the only mario games i dont own are mario soccer and mario party 3 and up.
Its just that all these companies have a cash cow that they use so much its kinda annoying. you can see this by looking at the april fools editions of magazines (mario rodeo, mario accounting, mario goes shopping etc.). Im not the only one that thinks this.
This is not to say that the mario games are bad. I'd just rather have an original platformer starring mario (mario galaxy=very yes) than mario making a cameo to make a quick buck.
its probably not the best thing when you buy a mario basketball game because there are square enix characters in it. kinda tells you something.
i meant no offense i was just trying to make a point.
You also don't have Press Start To Play's newest comic, which I believe came out only two days ago. Featuring Rayman: http://pressstarttoplay.net/comic.php
@18 if you read everyone from the beggining its funny. It gose through the entire Half-life 2 game as the character "Gordan Froham" or somthin. Reading one of every 3 or 4 joystiq puts up, they don't make as much sence.
Really good round up- please keep the full collection of comics- I only ever bother to read the comics highlighted in your collection every week! Thanks
@5: It is because Silicon Knight's announced an Eternal Darkness sequel after the completion of the Too Human trilogy. Because the trilogy looks to be not-so-good right now, many people are upset over the fact that we won't have anything to whet our Silcon-appetite.
The creator said he'd love to do more Eternal Darkness games, but only after he finishes the Too Human trilogy. So we won't be getting any more ED games until then.
I Loved Eternal Darkness, and as a nintendo fanboy, I have to wait while they make 3 whole games for the [MS hate rant removed] 360.
I voted for something else, but only after checking to make sure that comic was winning.
I hate how everyone just voted for penny arcade by default... just because it's a good comic in general doesnt mean it deserves to win every week. That was one of the worst PA comics I've ever seen, it doesnt make any sense. The half life one ("Concerned") was actually hilarious - I havent "LOL"d at a comic for a while but I did at that one. I went through some of the archives and I think it's funny. It got my vote.
@Myles ...It's ironic how you even used the examples and still don't see how it's a cash cow. DDR having Mario on it, 7 Mario Party Games, Mario being in NBA street and SSX. The fella has been in every sports game possible. There is a reason that the Mario names has outsold the GTA and Madden franchises...and it's not because Mario Sunshine outsold the PS2 console (which it hasn't)
It's rediculous how PA and CAD almost always win when they are placed in these things. Sure they hit some out of the park, but this proves that people vote based on names and not on quality. That PA strip is one of the worst in a while. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/07/12 It's not game based but it proves my point.
Huh... so Fellate has 2 L's? I will hold my hands up and appologise for that sincerely, especially as someone that likes to take spelling very seriously. Kudos for spotting that, have a congratulatory cookie Lloyd :)

I thought the FoxTrot series making fun of goldfarming in WoW was better than any of the srips this week:

The FoxTrot was good. But the one of MyExtraLife rofl it was real good, it has the kind of humor i like.

I'm glad you like the comic, joystiq. :)

What if it's because it's good? Is that okay? Can I buy it then, or are you still going to be mad?
Rob X. @ Jul 16th 2006 12:53AM
@8 Mario is a cash cow and has been milked for profit before: Hotel Mario, Super Mario Cereal, Captain Lou. I can go on and on.
Rob X. @ Jul 16th 2006 12:59AM
Oh yeah, and that abortion of a movie.
Mario Party is essentially Nintendo's Madden: Annual releases, roster update, a couple extra features, pretty much still the same game.
Mank @ Jul 16th 2006 1:30AM
@13
He said "because there are square enix characters". He didn't say "if it has characters you like that aren't normally there but is still a good game".
I'd bet there's more than one FF fanboy/girl that will buy / has bought a DS to play the Final Fantasy games (III, CC, etc) for the system.
minus_273 @ Jul 16th 2006 1:42AM
half life.. why is that half life thing always on this list. I cant figure out if it is supposed to be funny or what.
Scott @ Jul 16th 2006 1:49AM
obo,
i wasnt saying its gonna be a bad game. im looking forward to the game myslef.
i was just saying how there are mario fans that wouldnt buy it that will now buy it because there are square characters in it.
