The PS3 outselling the Wii by ONLY 33% would be happy news for Nintendo! The PS2 won by a far greater margin...

I'm sure Nintendo will be happy if the PS3 sells 2x as many Wiis. That still gives Nintendo a greater market share than last time around.

I like how the PS3 fanboys, finally seeing a faint gimmering hope that their console isn't going to be doomed to failure like the CD-I, are stupid enough to believe any poll they see with "PS3" in it, no matter WHAT the poll says.

Learn some basic polling principles, morons.
Interest = units sold? Lol.

Regardless of whether the poll is about unreleased hardware or not, it goes without saying the Xbox 360 is irrelevant to Japanese gamers. This SHOULD come as no suprise. For all those fans of Microsoft out here in the states, you should probably realize that this still means nothing to you, as you will still get those highly anticipated games you want (gears, halo, etc.). The only thing I forsee is that Japanese developers may start shunning the 360 when Wii and Ps3 consoles come out and show more sales potential.

Wow, how the tides turn when the shoe is on the other foot. Just remember this when another Wii Vs. PS3 poll shows the Wii ahead by a large margin. Then I bet you'll be the pathetic one trying to explain why the poll must be bad.

All fanboys suck. The only reason why I'm going to just get the Wii at first is because of games. I won't buy a system that has less than 10 games that I'm interested in/anticipating. If the Xbox360 gets 7 more games that interest me, and if the PS3 gets 9 more games that interest me, I won't get either of them.

WOW, This is the first poll (and I've seen about a dozen) that shows PS3 generating more interest than Wii ANYWHERE.

That's why I don't trust it's credibility. That poll just shows the people that went to amazon Japan and clicked the poll. Obviously there are more sony supporters in Japan that go to Amazon.jp to buy their crap. Thats all the poll shows.

This post hasn't been corrected yet?

Besides the typo in the title, the post seems to be drawing an incorrect conclusion from the info linked.

Where exactly is the chart the post is referring to? The page linked just asks what console customer's want pre-order news about, just like CheapyD explained.

It makes sense that people are interested in pre-order news for the PS3 because the final price of the 60GB version is still up in the air.

Even if this was a poll about interest, I still wouldn't trust it. Considering the PS3 has 2 of the 3 poll options, and the HDD size is in the option. So the uniformed consumer simply looks like 60GB vs. 20GB vs. no HDD.

A poll would be equally biased if it used price in the options. $250 Wii vs. $400 Xbox 360 vs. $600 PS3 would most likely lead to a higher percentage of votes for Wii.

If you ask a question the right way, you can always get the answer you want.

Why does anyone put any faith in these polls? They are arbitrary and unsubstantiated. We'll know what console does better come 3 months after each launch. Those stats should reveal a trend-line that should be a good indicator as to which console is more successful and where. Until then, this is all pointless speculation that has people wasting their time and energy arguing without any tangible evidence either way and they really use are these trivial polls conducted by online entities that have no business conducting such an action.

I need to remember to turn off adblock when I'm looking for images.

I see the graph now, but it still seems to refer to how many people are registering to recieve pre-order updates. I guess this is the first edition of it and it'll be updated weekly, so we'll see how it changes.

I think Eric mentioned something like this. In science there is a concept known ass repeatable results. Ideas are not typically accepted, even when they have research backing them up, unless an independent party can achieve the same results in their own independent experiment. If no one can, the new idea is thrown out as a red herring.

The same basic principle applies to polling. If one poll shows something very different from the results of many more, similar polls, usually the single poll is wrong. Keep in mind as well; this poll is only dealing with customers of a particular store. That tends to skew the results too.

"No, things are expensive because of high demand, not the other way around. That's how it has ALWAYS worked."

Yea... So when plasma tv's and monitors first dropped on the market people were clamoring to spend above 5 grand to get this popular item.

The Bently Arnage is priced at $250,000 because the auto dealerships cannot keep those cars on the showroom floor.

Or..... Just maybe.... They are priced that way because of whats inside them? Maybe even because of what it takes to make them?

I don't think this is a case of Sony trying to use thier name and sell you a pile of dung. For what they are offerring technology wise the price is pretty fair.

Well, since the post isn't gonna be corrected, here's my take on what should have been written (by both Joystiq and PunchJump).

Amazon's Japanese website has posted the first chart in their weekly calcultion of next-gen console interest. Users were asked which console they were interested in recieving pre-order news about. Choices included the Wii, the 60GB PS3 and the 20GB PS3. Naturally, the Xbox 360 is not on the list because it has already been released.

The 60GB version of the PS3 generated the most interest, likely due to the lack of a final price in Japan. The Wii followed closely, while the 20GB PS3 fell far behind.

Since the options were not exclusive, it's difficult to draw solid conclusions about this data. However, it is in sharp contrast with a recent Famitsu poll[link to "Famitsu poll"] that declared overwhelming interest in Wii.

It is important to note that while Famitsu is geared towards gamers, Amazon represents a more general consumer. Though Nintendo is aiming outside the hardcore gaming audience, it seems the Sony brand[link to "Brand poll"] is still generating a fair amount of interest in the mainstream audience.

Amazon will update the chart every Friday, so we'll be able to see if, and how, mainstream attention to the consoles change over time.

Well, Microsoft are losing a lot of money with the Xbox brand, and they have the lowest marketshare of any consoles.
Xbox+360=low
PS2+PSP=many
DS+GBA+Cube=thanks DS for taking over the world.

"I don't see the reason for such expectation for a GameCube part 2"

more like "VIDEO GAMES: PART 2" this is something very different. This is a new way of playing. not high res. textures and more polygons per model. THIS IS A WHOLE NEW CONTROLLER. New ways of playing and new genres. Even Madden is getting into the Wii action, that pretty much sums it up, considering it hasn't changed since maybe 1996. I rather play it while simulating holding the ball that watching their new Sweat engine in the Ps3.This is a revolution like most people say.

just like Xbox Live gave Online gaming a more uniform direction that the mess Online Pc gaming was. Ask anyone who's not a computer nerd if setting up your xbox live was hard.

Again?!?!?!?

*Waves to gets people's attention*

Good... Now that I have your attention. Enterbrain publishes Famitsu, Enterbrain also publishes Otani Fami. Famitsu != Otani Fami. The do not have the same readership. Also 216 gamers, 85 retailers, and 33 game makers Does not represent a majority or even a significant amount of the populace in japan. I know for a fast that japan has way over 250 game makers and how is it know whether or not they asked the smallest unaffiliated one's?

People that are decrying this poll have a valid point but please dont point to the "supposed" famitsu poll which is just as sad.

According to Next-Gen.biz, Otona Fami is "the casual version of the Weekly Famitsu." So that's why people are connecting the two magazines. However, you're right, the title should say Otona Fami poll instead of Famitsu poll. Another Blake Snow post that's inaccurate.

And even though Otona Fami isn't geared towards hardcore gamers, it's still geared towards gamers, so I think my contrasting it to this Amazon "poll" is valid. If only in the sense that one is looking at gamer's point of view and the other is looking at the general consumer's point of view.

As for the numbers, I don't believe the Amazon "poll" gives solid numbers; it is only meant to show a ratio. That is why this current posting is completely irrelevant because it assumes the users were asked to choose which one console they were interested in.

Another thing about poll numbers, the total number should be mentioned when possible, however, you'd be surprised at the conclusions people will draw on results from even smaller than 200+ people.

Polls are useless as a tool to accurately measure public response. They are, however, an excellent marketing tool. And I believe it's the same with most blogs as of today, so they fit together nicely.

What is the difference between casual gamer and general consumer? I don't see any. Anyone that is willing to look up for information and submit a request for info on a game console is a gamer. The general consumers don't look this stuff up and most do not know whats comming down the pipe until they see the tv ad or see it in best buy.

This is the same as the Otona Fami poll. You get numbers but it is still a ratio of a very few small people asked to represent the majority. And the Otona Fami is also just a guage of interest because things can change on launch day.

mmm, i'm thinking about the same story , named the psp - ds fight , remembering that psp was better in specs and the nintendo was better in price , you see the psp didn't came close to the ds , but yeah , the psp was the first sony hanheld system , ok , and nintendo was a succes with gameboy , gba ... so psp doesn't do bad , but their were also polls in japan , about what handheld you like more etc , and psp was more liked than was buyed. and , no i'm not a nintendo fanboy , i have a psp , but when you look with an open mind , you see that when the wii is going to advertise and give more details about it , the poll will look very different
and what about xbox360 , yeah it wasn't in the poll for the right reason , but don't come out that the xbox360 wasn't put in because it ain't good etc .... , ps3 comes a year after the ps3 so xbox360 just failed on it's relase date , it better waited a little bit , have more development , so better specs , and then still have a better price then ps3 , so maybe , than they could compete with the ps3
