I'm not so sure... most of the kiddies that are addicted to WoW would be addicted to another MMO if it didn't exist.

What a whiner! Sullivan, your game not selling as well as you'd like doesn't mean you get to cry foul on WoW. Your failure to capture gamers minds is not Blizzard's fault; perhaps you should develop more interesting & unique titles? Not that action-rpg isn't original... I mean I think the first of that genre I encounterd was Gauntlet, a mere 22 years ago... better luck next time pal. Perhaps we can look forward to a WWII shooter from you next?

While you can't necessarily blame Blizzard, I think you can at least scowl at them a little bit and complain. The design and objectives of the gameplay in World of Warcraft are pretty clearly geared towards addiction and long, repetitive tasks...an anti-trust in C++. From a business perspective it does make sense, but I know I went from dropping at least $100 a month on games in general to giving Blizzard $29.98 a month for my two accounts, and that's it.

Anyway, enough typing, must finish work so I can go raid. That trinket I want might just drop.

What's hurting the PC gaming market is the lack of anything better, compatibility problems, and insane requirements.

The moment I can pop any ol' PC game into my PC that cost me $400 (or less!) to buy and have it work within minutes out of the box, and be able to play games new and old without the need for an upgrade or software patch...

well, that'll be the day my consoles will finally have some competition.

Maybe WOW wouldn't suck up so much time/dollars away from other software if other software didn't suck so badly.

Ever think of that. This is capitalism. Not making any money because of Wow, make a game that better and more compelling than WoW.

just... wow!

Blizz just found a good combination with WoW, since its a fast paste mmo game that doesnt require much to understand to dive into. Mix that with the time sink of random drop items(::cough::low drop rate::cough::) and PvP, people can just sit there for hours trying to get certain gears.

I bought WoW two weeks ago.
I installed it last night.

Grind. Grind. Grind.
How many hours can people spend watching their avatar kill hundreds of identical monsters? I mean, maybe if combat was more than hitting 4 [wait] 5 [wait] 1 [wait] [repeat].

Mosquito - 1776 hours and counting

Of course at first I started playing to enjoy the storyline and to take on dungeons with my guild friends, but now I stay for the pvp. If you're in it to mindlessly grind, dont expect a payoff.

The problem with PC gaing, as someone pointed out earleir, is that you MUST upgrade every 1 1/2-2 years to be able to play games on high settings. I bought a PC with 3.0ghz, 1gig of RAM, and a Radeon 9800 Pro (256meg) about 2 years ago, and it's already a middle of the road PC that can't play any of the new games on anything above medium. When I got the damn thing it was a top of the line PC (or close anyway). I bought a 360 because I was sick of upgrading so often to be able to play the games I wanted on high....I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Actually I'm really enjoying Titan Quest. Getting a ton of game time out of it, and it has a lot of variety in terms of areas, items, character customization and monsters. Deserves to sell well, imo.

Oh boo hoo. As own of my personal favorite quotes goes - "Laissez Faire, Bitches!" If you want to conquer WoW you're going to have to produce a damn quality game to do it. How is this a bad thing?

Hey! It's not Blizzard's fault! Try playing on high population servers, like Mannoroth, around 6-7pm. They're using 1500ms lag to try to drive people towards other games.

Isn't this obvious? Didn't anyone see FPS doug talk about how they lost a lot of good men to WoW :p Seriously though WoW is taking a lot of players from other gamers. Theres people who would play a few games online that now only play WoW.

I don't have too much sympathy for this whiner...mostly because WoW isn't that good to begin with, and like the original post said, other GOOD games get attention.

I agree that WOW's success is probably hurting other games. When we have a good MMORPG, they tend to have an addictive quality about them. When I was hooked on EQ back in its prime, I remember how it was so consuming I ignored most other games. I would buy some other good games but I tended to not finish them or barely play them before going back to EQ. With few exception (ie Counterstrike, Starcraft, etc) most games have limited replayability and most player will eventually finish it and go on to another game. With successful MMORPG, that player could be glued to the game for few years. So each new game is constantly competing with the success of WOW.

Have to agree, Chazster. When I was playing Asherons Call (#1) and WoW (about a year) I didn't buy a single other PC game. In fact, I really wasn't paying attention to new releases at all. Too busy being part of the MMO community.

I think any successful game always hurts the industry in some way after a certain point in its life cycle. If a game still holds a majority of the market, which I believe WoW has a 50+ percent userbase in the MMO category, it "steals" time and users from other lesser known games. But this time I believe it is the utter lack of innovative gameplay and saturation of generic games that has hurt the PC gaming market more than anything else, with a few exceptions. The success of WoW has also led to numerous clones that have tried to emulate the success of WoW, which also contributes to the lack of innovation in games.

However, one can also argue that the success of WoW may have developers seeking to create a truly innovative game that will "take back" from WoW's large userbase, i.e. Spore.

@10 dubz :
The 360 can't play Prey on the highest settings, does that mean it's already worthless to you?
I don't know where the idea that you have to play all PC games on the highest settings available came from, when medium settings are already above what the console version are capable of.

Although i have played WoW for many hundreds of hours, quit and now hate that evil game (impressive game, just a blackhole) everyone here has failed to mention that WoW has increased the number of gamers overall.. this is also important, the developers (i am a developer as well) should be happy that wow has made so many new additions to gaming (person wise) and now its our job to steal those customers! -- not to mention regarding the discussion about system requirements, WoW has in all likeliness encourage customers to upgrade their pc's to near top of the line, i know i did, dual graphics cards, more ram, raid0 and 24" lcd just so i can enjoy that game in its best form... this too is also a benefit to other game developers since u can be more flexible with the system requirements (not that thats necessarily good) but at least its less of a worry knowing that WoW has forced so many to upgrade.

thnx die

Wow..."What developers need to do is find ways to reinvent tired old genres".Developers should've been doing that from the start...or instead try to create a new and exciting genre. Developers complaining over the success of a game seems pretty foolish. Most of the PC games out right now are nothing but crap and have nothing to offer the player except better graphics.

I played WoW for about 3 months or so and i got so addicted to it that i simply didnt want to do anything else. I would go straight to the computer when i woke up and then stay on as long as my parents would allow me to, which was several hours a day, usually about 6. I became so irritable and angry during those months and i stopped participating in afterschool activities, church, and well, pretty much everything. Then my parents had finally had enough of the game and what it did to me(and also my younger brother who played) so they got rid of it. I have to say that it is an amazing game though. I have never been so addicted to anything else in my life, let alone a computer game! It is just a game that appeals to a wide range of people and there are so many different ways to go about playing which has made it so successful. I feel that if the other games out there were just simply a better game than WoW then they would be played more than WoW. Other companies should just work at creating a better game and promoting it so they will have just as much of a success as blizzard has.
