I personally like the style. At least they're not trying to make it look as real as possible, but sticking with a cartoonish look that clearly implies this is not "real" but well-done CG.

@ Killer Twinkie

I hope it's good. I've been waiting for a real TMNT game for a long time. Konami lost all respect with the dreck they released in the last two versions considering they made the best version years ago. It's a disgrace

@ Probot

I had a friend tell me that he thought the Godfather was a boring film and would rather watch movies like ATL or Boys N the Hood. Just couldn't understand why it's thought to be a classic. I let a friend of mine listen to Purple Haze and he looked at me like I was crazy and ask me to put on some 2Pak or Biggie. He couldn't understand why people "kiss Jimi Hendrix's ass"

The point is, if you don't know, then you just don't know.

@32 footsteps

Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, I guess all hope is lost. Reading (and research) is fundamental.

Personally, I'm excited. I think the art direction and style is a great take off from the graphic novels. I will admit that I'm not sure WHO this movie is being made for. It would definitely kick more ass if Eastman and Laird were actually working together again.

Incidentally, we will most likely never see Krang, The Technodrome or any of the characters created exclusively for the original cartoon show in the movies. Those properties are not owned by Mirage Studios...and that's why they aren't used in the new cartoons either.

There's an official FAQ here:

Hopefully this will be done in the spirit of the original eastman and laird(sp?) comics, which had much darker overtones and a lot less of the cowabunga dude cheesiness

Strider, I meant Michael Bay isn't involved anywhere on the TMNT movie (as that's the topic at hand). My comment was a less-than-subtle dig at the upcoming Transformers movie.

Also, as for whether or not this TMNT movie looks realistic - does anyone have a real-life ninja turtle against which we can compare if it looks realistic?

It was, but only in Europe:

@46 "Wait, if they supposedly don't have voice actors yet, why does Mikey talk (admittedly a bit quietly and muffled) in the trailer?"

Go back and watch the trailer to the first TMNT movie. *none* of the turtles had their final voices! Mikey sounded really bad.

Sweet Jesus that was awesome.

I'm getting really fed up with people online bad mouthing a movie or video game based on 30 seconds of footage.

"Oh it's gonna be based on the crappy FoxBox cartoon" You my friend are not a true TMNT fan then. The Foxbox cartoon follows the comic book that the TMNT was based off of. If you've only seen the old 1980's TMNT cartoon then you have missed out on alot.

Plus the movie is well over 9 months away from release. How can you say something sucks if you have nothing but a 30 second preview.

It's like saying Star Wars sucked because of the long opening story crawl at the beginning and walking out before the Star Destroyer shows up.

I was under the impression that voice work is always done first in order for the animation to sync up with the sound. That way the actors can act around the dialogue rather than the picture. That's why dubs are rarely as good as the original.

Probot I often agree with your points, and I see what you are saying by stating that this site is about "video game culture" and TMNT is part of video game culture so there's no problem posting it on this
site. And I never post on blogs about how a story is late, or how Joystiq has a bias towards a specific system, so please everyone, listen to my point before I'm labeled as another bitching blogger.

Something that is just about video games is(almost)always black & white. But how is it determined before something goes on this site if it fits into "the gamer culture"? If this site starts putting posts that they deem related to gamer culture, than they just start generalizing by saying "hmm... a lot of geeks like video games so they must be into this also."

I'm actually a fan of TMNT but
it has nothing to do with video games. I've just been a fan of the old cartoons and the first couple of films. But you know what? I'm not a Star Trek or Star Wars fan. I'm sure there's a lot of people
who are "part of the video game culture" who are fans of both of those series. Why doesn't Joystiq start posting any news involving Star Trek or Star Wars? This week is the San-Diego Comic Con and I
know that a lot of the "video game culture" around me is into comic books. I've never read one.

I could go on and on talking about Dungeons & Dragons, Lord of the Rings, or any other stereotype
of what gamers are into. But the point is it's not up to this site to determine for me what's video game related. Now if the site claimed to be about video games and movies, or a video game and
sci-fi/comics/entertainment site that would be ok. But it doesn't.
My mom once made a comment that kind of made me feel uncomfortable but it was a good point, "I'd rather you get a subscribtion to Playboy sent to this house than to Sports Illustrated, because at least Playboy doesn't claim to be about sports for one issue". Get my point?

@Judd

Well, first of all, the TMNT trailer is directly related to the video game because all the character models, settings, concept art, etc from the movie are being used in the game. This particular post fails to mention that, but that's the direct connection to the movie trailer.

Check Kotaku for a short Making Of video:
http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/clips-making-the-tmnt-game-with-ubisoft-189050.php

I do understand what you're saying. But you are hitting on inherent flaw in all blogs. The bloggers have the ultimate say as to what gets put up.

But to counter that, exactly where on Joystiq does it say "We are a video game blog and we will only cover video games." The material that's chosen represents what the audience wants to see. And when someone posts a story and gets 50+ comments, I think they can consider that an accurate judgment.

I understand that bloggers are regular guys with no credentials and it's hard to put any value in their opinion on anything. But the value is created after you understand the personality. After you read a dozen or so Ludwig Kietzmann posts, you get his style and can decide how to judge his opinion.

Yes, there are bloggers on Joystiq that I don't like. If I see their name, I ignore the post and head straight for the read link. But that's true of any blog or any news source.

The fact that you understand that Star Wars and Dungeons and Dragons relates to gamer culture shows that the idea is prevalent enough to tolerate. If you don't want to read it, you don't have to. Today, it takes no effort at all for me to skip anything with "Halo" in the title, so I don't see it any harder to skip "Star Wars movie" or "Comic Con" if I wanted to.

Personally, I would really prefer more news, even if it's only tangentially related, than less news. I think Comic Con should be covered, even if only sparsely. I'd really like to see a Comic Con rundown with bullet points about the major announcements. Comic culture, game culture, anime culture, internet culture. They are all very closely related and that shouldn't be ignored.

As everyone knows, the internet practically shuts down on the weekend, for reasons I can't understand. There always interesting news going on and I don't like that sites only update 9am-5pm, Mon-Fri. It just seems counterintuitive.

There’s a lot of good video game news this weekend like Hilary Clinton’s rumored video game tax and the Wii game, Heroes, trailer.

Tax: http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/top/clinton-to-planning-video-game-tax-looks-for-martyr-189042.php

Video: http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2006/07/21/heroes-footage-revealed-exclusive-game-from-suda-51/

That's a good quote about Sports Illustrated, but it makes to very theoretical point, not a practical one. The Swimsuit issue sells well because the SI audience buys it. The movie trailers on Joystiq get posted because they get a lot of comments.

Plus, as I said earlier, Joystiq doesn't define itself so narrowly because it simply doesn't define itself. Authoritative definitions limit. It’s the users that define Joystiq.

@63 Come on man, spending your money on it? I for one have got no problem going to see a maybe 2 hour long movie for 10 bucks to try to relive years of fun I had when I was a kid. Regardless of whether it sux or not I'll be there just for that simple fact, just like even though Transformers may not be too great a lot of people will be there to watch it because of when they were kids.

They should of been doing these kind of CGI films with all the super hero movies they have been doing lately.

I'm sick of the whole "gnarly rad" Michealangelo talk, though, but it is true to the series i guess.

Anything involving the ninja turtles outside of the original black and white comics (and the subsequent colorized graphic novels) is absolute kiddie crap. The turtles were vicious, deadly, beer swilling fighters.

Heads were lopped off. Eyes were stabbed out. Limbs were cleaved and obscenities were yelled. They weren't for the kiddies. They didn't wear multicolored pastel masks either. All of them wore red and they didn't yell "cowabunga!" every 30 seconds.

I view the toning down of the turtles as a huge travesty. I can't blame Eastman and Laird for selling out for the HUGE buck$, but the original turtles were very cools and everything after was just horrible.

This flick looks to be a hybrid. The physical portrayal of the turtles (minus the multicolored masks) is much truer to the original idea. Lets hope the violence and profanity are too.

this trailer shows the tmnt's doing what they do best.
i like the other movies, i grew up on the original cartoon, and i still have toys in my closte(im 23).
Im a big fan of the comics and a bigger fan of Palladium's RPGs based on our amphibious friends. If the movie stays true to the original comics and the ideas behind the rpgs we're in for a treat. We're not talking about record breaking movies and big budget productions, we're talking about MUTANT NINJA TURTLES KICKING THE BUTT OF BAD GUYS. Lighten up folks, if you love the boys like i do, its gonna be great. COWABUNGA!!!
