Is your PC rig ready for Crysis?

Is your PC 1337 enough for Crysis? Some suspect minimum and required specs for the upcoming first-person shooter for the PC have been unveiled by an admin at an unofficial Crysis forum. Read it and weep (or not, depending on how awesome you are) PC boys and girls:

Minimum Requirements:

CPU: Athlon 64 3000+/Intel 2.8ghz
Graphics: Nvidia 6600/X800GTO (SM 2.0)
RAM: 768Mb/1Gb on Windows Vista
HDD: 6GB
Internet: 256k+
Optical Drive: DVD
Software: DX9.0c with Windows XP

Recommended Requirements:

CPU: Dual-core CPU (Athlon X2/Pentium D)
Graphics: Nvidia 7800GTX/ATI X1800XT (SM 3.0) or DX10 equivalent
RAM: 1.5Gb
HDD: 6GB
Internet: 512k+ (128k+ upstream)
Optical Drive: DVD
Software: DX10 with Windows Vista

See how the recommended section asks that you have Windows Vista? Ouch. Either way, this is all pure speculation since nothing official has been announced. For all we know, this "admin" could be an attention-starved egomaniac. EA has yet to update their site with any info on exactly what you'll need to run this beautiful game.

Well I'll just stick tp console games so I dont have to worry about upgrading every 6 months...thats why I have a Mac360! lol but seriously that is the only combo you ever need.

I've never had a "rig" that could play the latest games.
That's why I rely on consoles for next gen stuff. I KNOW I can play those games.

Relying on consoles for next-gen stuff only seems to work for the first year or two. Then the PCs quickly move so far ahead (if they weren't in the first place) that you're playing watered down ports.

Maybe this generation will be different.

Well this seems like the kind of game that'll go on the 360/PS3 and be okay. I can manage the minimum specification quite easily, but having to move to dualcore and upgrade my graphics card to the expensive 7800GTX is too much money to play a game my PC will already run, except better.

I'll keep it console ports for a while, probably half way through the generation it'll be cheaper to upgrade and actually have games running that struggle on the consoles. PC and console gaming is just far too expensive to keep up with nowadays...

Though the 7600GT is still a long stretch away from a 7800GTX, if you have the 2405FPW don't expect to be playing this game at native resolution on that machine, not without sacrificing some other prettiness.

Spec'ing out systems is sort of a pastime of mine. Assuming you have a DVD drive and a hard drive with 6 gigs free and don't mind mucking about inside your case, here's the cheapest I could build their minimum and recommended systems for:

Minimun System Upgrade:
$130 asus mobo + ath64 3000+
$70 Nvidia 6600
$50 1 gig PC3200 ram
TOTAL = $250

Recommended System Upgrade:
$270 asus mobo + ath64x2 3800
$380 Nvidia 7800GTX
$90 pc2-6400 ddr2-800 1gb
$52 pc2-6400 ddr2-800 512mb
TOTAL = $792

So with the assumption that you have a computer already, it's cheaper than an XBOX core or more expensive than a PS3 premium.

My current system squeeks by the minimum specs by a small margin.

Looks like if you want to see this game looking pretty, it's cheaper to wait for a 360/PS3 version. If just playable will do (judging from FarCry, I think I'll appreciate the visuals more than the gameplay) then minimum specs seem to be your bet.

Hi all,

I'm the admin of Crysis-Online. I can assure you I'm not a attention-starved egomaniac :).

I'd like to tell you all that those requirements are higher than what you will see on the crysis box. Game devs lower the minimum and recommended requirements so the game looks more playable and therefore more tempting to purchase.

The requirements on Cryis-Online refer to the "real" requirements. So, you wouldn't want anything less than the minimum, but you should experience some nice visuals if you meet the recommended.

Also, Windows Vista is a recommendation becuase of DX10. DX10 is highly recommended as it offers a very handy performance boost.

If anyone wants to know how there rig will run Crysis, please post your specs in that thread and I'll reply with specific settings.

For those confused about the "Windows Vista" requirement its not just a ploy to get people to buy vista for no real reason, its because Vista is DX10... which will not be backported to XP ... it's the nextgen graphics for games, we'll probably see alot more games in the near future start taking advantage of it and falling back to 9.0c as a "minimum"....

But without dx10 you wont get alot of the new features, most noticibly the pimpy new volumetric clouds and smoke and stuff of that nature... really takes gaming up a notch.

That above screenshot is impressive. Those system reqs are not. 1.5 gig is just the recommended amount? (meaning 2 gig would be the optimal amount) Yikes. It seems like yesterday I was impressed when my friend got 1 gig of RAM.

pc gaming always feel dead and expensive to me.

9600 PRO - I've been able to play everyone game up to this day, even though the newest ones were on low. They still ran usually at 20 FPS give or take.

I don't really trust specs. I know that most people will tell you that games run like crap with the minimum specs and not at all below them, but so far I've seen ONE game that won't run smoothly at medium-ish settings with my box. measly 2100+XP processor, Radeon 9600XT, 1.5GB RAM. Seriously. Even new stuff, this thing still ploughs through, usually with no tweaking at all.

That one game is Oblivion, which I honestly doubt is coded all that well, and I know for certain that most of that computational effor is wasted on things that I don't even think look very good (ugly waving grass? no thanks). Though it DOES still run and is still absolutely playable, even at default settings, sometimes I get some low framerates -- never enough to affect gameplay.

All that said, I still do NOT expect to play Crysis on this thing.

Jesus I'm screwed! 6GBs!? Thats how much space I have free on my computer right now! Plus a 3000+ is the minimum? I only have a 3200+ :( My 6800GS should be able to handle it but I'm going to upgrade my computer some time next year with a bigger hard drive, a dual-core CPU, and maybe a better GPU. But I'm not gonna get Vista for a while but when I do I'll get another stick of RAM. I can't believe that they recommend a dual-core CPU though, I don't think any other game has recommended that.

Meh. I can build a mini-tower PC that will meet minimum reqs for less than $500.

Tower: $35
HD: 160GB, $50
RAM: 1GB, $75
CPU/Motherboard: P4 3GHz plus extra 512MB RAM, $100
GPU: Radeon X1800, $200
DVD: $30

Then I'd need just a little more for proper cooling, but I already have all the accesories I'd need. I don't see why everyone's complaining. May I remind you that this is still less than the PS3.

I just barely meet the requirements too, but I still intend on focussing more on consoles this generation. Atleast until Spore. Only a game like that I think is really worth upgrading for.

Point it out all you like, but few people are ever gonna build your BS PC that'll only just play Crysis.

I'd wager you'd not actually meet the miminum specs for less than the price of a PS3 unless you can get it through work or are into some dodgy dealings. Man, Sony-haters work in weird ways.

the reason the "Recommended" requirements ask for windows vista is that this will be the first DX10 compatible game. Without Windows Vista, you can't get DX10. Thus, Windows Vista is required to utilize the game to it's fullest.

The real title of this article should actually read: "Can Your 360 or PS3 play Crysis?" The body would be extremely short: No *$#@ing Way! This game was, in my humble opinion, /the/ announcement of E3. The seccond I saw it, I damn near broke down and cried- it's the most beautiful game ever made. Sure, I'll need a rig that costs more than the prices all three NextGen consoles combined and cubed but, con sarnit, it's worth it! I respect the 360, and even the PS3 (jokes!), because it's about at par with my PC right now. Give it a few months, when Games For Windows, and Vista are launched, and the gap between the PC and 360 will be comprable to that between my TI-99/4A Home Computer and my TI83+ Graphing Calc.

Sorry but PCs won't "surpass" consoles after the first 2 years of a consoles life cycle. The only games that ever really matter on PCs are FPS, RTS and MMOs.

Umm...I also build systems and you can't get a 3ghz P4, motherboard AND 512MB of RAM for $100. The CPU alone is AT LEAST $100 by itself.

- (2) Geforce 7800 GTs w/ 256MB (SLI config)
- Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
- 300GB SATA2 HDD
- (2) 120GB PATA HDD

GSI, technically, they do indeed "surpass" consoles. Obviously the gameplay matters, as well as local multiplayer features,ease of use etc. But the latter half of this generation, especially PS2, has been well below the standard level of PC games.

Dont forget PC hardware prices drop relativley fast and Vista wont be out until christmas, I expect you can get some great bargins in the Janaruary sales for a PC that can run the recommended specs.

DX10 can't be hacked to run on Windows XP because it requires a different kernel, graphics subsystem and driver model. All these thing interlink and you can't move just DX10 to XP without doing the other stuff as well. You simply need Vista.

4GB hard drive x2 cos the old one got buggy
windows 98 SE upgraded from 95 in 2000 cos were dumb like that

Since that's FAR SUPERIOR to what they ask for it'll take the strain off the 1.7Ghz Celeron and On-board Intel graphics.
