Suda 51 reveals Heroes (Wii) game trailer
A new game from the makers of Killer 7 has emerged for Nintendo's upcoming Wii. The game, entitled Heroes, was supposed to make an appearance at E3 2006, but got pulled for reasons unknown at the last minute. The style and creative look of the above trailer are there, but how about some actual gameplay scenes? And don't even get me started on the pathetic voice acting that appears to be done by the same guy that brought us "Excuuuuse me princess."

horrible/on purpose? voice acting aside, the game has a lot of potential to help pull in mature gamers based on the style alone.
I'm excited to see what this becomes.
Stoof @ Jul 24th 2006 2:37PM
Simply amazing! Great story, artwork, and music! Wii! I cannot wait.
Tim @ Jul 24th 2006 2:40PM
Horribly annoying. Hate the visual style, hate the voice acting, hate the music. Didn't really give you an idea of what the gameplay would be like.
Greg2k @ Jul 24th 2006 2:41PM
Ok, though there's no gameplay footage, I'm pretty sure the ingame graphics will be those exact same graphics. It's not a hell of a lot more complex than Killer 7, and it would make sense since the Wii won't be considerably more powerful than the Cube.
Here's hoping it's not on rails...
Moe @ Jul 24th 2006 2:44PM
Sweet jebus that looks good
Justin @ Jul 24th 2006 2:45PM
Yeah... his armor was pretty shiny... and his words were exceptionally fine. -_-
Laxcat @ Jul 24th 2006 2:49PM
Its funny how everyone seems to have different things they "hope it is" and "hope it isn't." I hope they just make a game according to thier own vision and do something I've never seen before. This is on the right track for that, so I'm excited.
The voice acting does suck... but I have no problem with that. You just have to appreciate it on a different level. Like a Blade movie. :)
Jose @ Jul 24th 2006 2:55PM
George Lucas is gonna sue the balls offa someone.
Tristan @ Jul 24th 2006 2:55PM
It seems if going to be a sword/lightsaber fighting game. I just want to see some gameplay.
DarkX @ Jul 24th 2006 2:56PM
Hey, don't knock any Blade movies. I'LL BUST A CAP!
And yeah, I thought the voice acting was intentional. I mean, it's a cocky, lightsaber-esque touting, generic buff with a a loud mouth, annoying voice. What does that tell you? (Hint, it has something to do with a certain country)
Probot @ Jul 24th 2006 2:59PM
To me, it looks like it'll be a fighting game. I hope it isn't, but the premis would certainly support that.
Art style and music are great though. And I don't expect the voice actors to be final considering this game won't be out for another year at the earliest.
Actually, if I remember correctly, all the voice acting for the Japanese version of Killer 7 was in English, but pretty poor English. So they re-recorded the main stuff and garbled the voices of the secondary characters.

Uuuuuh, Canada?
Bocaj @ Jul 24th 2006 3:08PM
Okay, so we have a goofy hero (Travis Touchdown), battling a serious rival (Helter Skelter) in a battle that involves yelling and explosions. This fight is followed by a mysterious messenger (Sylvia Christel) informing our hero (who is more positive than his rival) that he should become the number one generic anime person by doing a certain number of things (killing 10 other assassins). Ladies and gentlemen (or more likely gentlemen and other, gentlemen shaped objects), I believe that what we have here is the plot to Beyblade. Or Pokemon. Or Dragon Ball Z. Or any other Saturday morning anime. Or roughly 60% of all anime in general. It’s the goofy hero verses serious rival (or vice versa) and battle X number of foes by chatting with them and then producing large, inappropriate colored explosions (or perhaps collecting X number of objects/creatures). Mr. Touchdown informs us that “Your shining armor and fine words won’t get you anywhere!” Well Travis, I hope that your canyon of hope envelopes the bus stop of madness and becomes a banner for fortitude of a crater that is filled with the fish of reason! Hopefully the developers will make the game playable this time because Killer 7 was not really a video game, so much as a semi interactive experiment to see how many load screens the human mind can tolerate. If they replace the horrendous restricted-to-rails/800 load screens per minuet game-play of Killer 7 with something like a combination of third person weird melee combat and first person weird gunplay that you can switch between on the fly to demolish your absurdly named enemies, then I may be willing to put up with cut scenes in which Travis and Sylvia have entirely separate, unrelated conversations with each other. And I know that’s a big ole run on sentence, but there is no other way to express the concept that I really wanted to enjoy Killer 7, yet could not because I strongly dislike being tortured. Hopefully they will make Heroes into an actually video game rather than a pseudo interactive movie about the writer’s failed attempt to generate social and/or political commentary due to his use of the Japanese standard of making video games that are hideously repetitive and utterly nebulous.
Scott @ Jul 24th 2006 3:08PM
YES! I am so flippin excited. I loved Killer 7 and this looks so good. Yeah it doesn't show anything about the gameplay and it has corny-over-the-top dialogue. But if you played Killer 7 you will know that the game is more about presentation and the overall wierd stanely kubric vibe than the gameplay. And it is supposed to be over-the-top, that's what makes it so great. Another fresh game comin for the Wii.
Laxcat @ Jul 24th 2006 3:09PM
Who's knocking Blade movies? I love 'em. But my point is there are several levels on which to enjoy something. I can't expect Godfather level acting or cinematography from a Blade movie. But I also can't expect torrents of blood and exploding vampires (an occasional necessity for this movie goer) from a Godfather movie.
The same principle applies here. Production value is not directly proportional to amount of fun to be had watching (or interacting with) said production.
DarkX @ Jul 24th 2006 3:13PM
Pfft, doesn't matter either. While the last would definately fall into the "guilty pleasure" with gore and fights and whatnot, the first 2 were great with actual acting and dialogue.
"Uuuuuh, Canada?"
Hmmm, point, but why would the Japs insult the Canadians? No, no, that's our thing.
Probot @ Jul 24th 2006 3:14PM
By the way, TheWiire.com was the first site to get the footage. They even had a high res version of the trailer available for download.
However, the story and the video have been pulled, so the WiiFanboy link Read link is now broken.
If this had been posted over the weekend when it showed up, more people would have been able to see the high res version.
.ed @ Jul 24th 2006 3:20PM
I have the High Res (Divx) version on my home pc (got it yesterday)... if someone wants to host it, I'd be willing to send it... (35MB if i remember)
let me know
Josh @ Jul 24th 2006 3:30PM
I can't play a game with bad voice acting (Baten Kaitos).
GSI @ Jul 24th 2006 3:30PM
@ Bocaj:
Look up the term "paragraph break."
Anyways...
I dig the artstyle and graphic engine...not sure about those voices though.
Jackson Pritt @ Jul 24th 2006 3:34PM
All I have to say about this is that the character models look like they were built out of Legos. Just because you're going with the cel shading look doesn't mean you get to make horrifyingly inaccurate character models.
This looks worse than XIII for the Xbox, and that's a pretty old game. I'm excited about the Wii, but the character models in both this and Red Steel look so bad it's making me nervous.
GSI @ Jul 24th 2006 3:47PM
Ever heard of "exaggerated" and "stylized" characters?
Not every 3D character ever made has to be 100% realistic and 100% proportional.
Casey @ Jul 24th 2006 3:47PM
Is it just me or does it seem that the Amped 3 team had something to do with this.
I does seem like an interesting game though.
Matters @ Jul 24th 2006 4:00PM
Bocaj I see your point but whats your problem with anime? You act like your point doesnt apply to half the movies out there and damn near every game we have ever played.
Bocaj @ Jul 24th 2006 4:27PM
Matters: I never said that non-anime movies/non-Japanese video games are more unique; if that’s what you mean. I just think that Heroes is another game that’s going to get a lot of attention for no reason other than that it’s Japanese. People constantly go on about how “oh the Japanese are so kooky and peculiar, and Americans as so formulaic.” Basically, if Katamari Damacy was made by the French, it would be held to greater scrutiny.
Within days of its first trailer Heroes already is getting the whole “Oh its art style is so unique!” treatment when the game looks exactly the same and every other anime from the “adults shoot guns” anime subgenera. Some people show hatred anime but someone it’s rare for anyone to point out that Japan is oversaturated with its own video games/animation just like America. But really, I’m just flabbergasted with people’s reactions to Japanese video games and animation. I heard someone say somewhere say the following:
“Neon Genesis Evangelon is the greatest anime ever made and the greatest achievement mankind has ever made.”
Now if that statement is true, then I feel pretty envious of the great achievement’s of various deep-sea dwelling tubeworms.
@GSI:
There, I have broken my paragraphs, all for you. I know that I can never be as insightful as you, the master of paragraph breaks, who makes new and unique statements like “I enjoy standard issue anime artwork presented in a cell shaded video game engine, yet I have mild and uncertain disdain for the dialog that’s written in engrish!” It’s like I’ve never heard anyone say that about a Japanese video game before.
GSI @ Jul 24th 2006 4:40PM
Ummm...where in my statement did I say I was not entirely sure if I liked the voice acting in that trailer? Perhaps I should have been more straight forward and said:
"The voice acting was crap."
There is that better and easier for you to understand?
jyggie @ Jul 24th 2006 4:48PM
On a sidenote from all the serious banter...
Travis Touchdown? What the heck? With a name like that, you'd think he's an adult film star or something, bwahahaha.
32_Footsteps @ Jul 24th 2006 4:53PM
Wait... from the makers of Killer 7? So it'll come out four years after the Wii comes out, and be simultaneously released on the PS3 despite promises of it being an exclusive?
Bocaj @ Jul 24th 2006 5:12PM
"not sure about those voices though." Those were your exact words, “not sure” indicates uncertainty, and it’s worded and positioned in a way that makes it appear as if you didn’t like the voice acting. But yes actually, I would like you to say "The voice acting was crap." However, I made some really weird grammatical errors in my last statement that sound like crappy voice acting. So I say we’re even.
With that in mind I must say that it’s sort of cool that Travis Touchdown appears to have a gigantic energy based fiddle. I know it keeps getting called a lightsaber but look at it; it’s a giant, technologically advanced fiddle with a beam of glowing something-or-another rather than a string. Hopefully, the game won’t be on rails and you’ll be able to run around, dishing out righteous fiddle justice on various nefarious assailants.
Seroth @ Jul 24th 2006 5:17PM
I'm excited for this game, and I loved Killer7. That's all I'm gonna say.
Brian @ Jul 24th 2006 5:26PM
Quick question: How come everytime a 360 or PS3 game doesn't have gameplay footage it gets knocked while a Wii game with no footage has nothing but positive comments?
el_perron @ Jul 24th 2006 6:03PM
Good thing this game is NOT coming to PS3 or Xbox, cause if it would it would lower the xbox and ps3.
jordan @ Jul 24th 2006 6:33PM
hey, everybody, there was a BETTER LOOKING HIGH QUALITY VERSION than this sorry Youtube one, much better graphics than Killer 7, and it's evident in the higher quality version... too bad TheWiire dropped the link...
xenikos @ Jul 24th 2006 6:39PM
The first 7 seconds of that video were interesting. Then it got real boring, real fast.
The action was clunky, the story was...vapid seeming, the names were silly, and the dialogue.was.ATROCIOUS!!
Plus, the lightsaber rip-off looks *exactly* like one of those horizontal black lights with a handle on it. I hope the game also has glow-stick boomerangs and a sonic gun that pumps out Oakenfold.
In fact, I would have been higher on the game if it was just the first few seconds of scrolling down that glass skyscraper. That looked pretty good.
Neil @ Jul 24th 2006 7:08PM
Well it's good to see that the Shenmue voice actors have found work.
T-Bag @ Jul 24th 2006 9:32PM
Characters are dousche bags, and therefore the game has already failed.
the antique @ Jul 24th 2006 9:45PM
I really hope this is all a joke.
GSI @ Jul 24th 2006 10:05PM
So I guess you can look into the future now...right T-bag?
justchris @ Jul 24th 2006 11:03PM
I'll agree that without any gameplay footage this trailer is pretty worthless, but don't dare knock the LOZ cartoon series. I loved that cartoon (all 13 episodes of it). Sure it was cheese, but it was grade A American cheese.
And to Bocaj:
I certainly wouldn't put Evangelion as the height of human achievement (that title obviously goes to sliced bread), but it's still a very good series, and defies the stereotype of anime you pratted about in your first post. All those anime fall into a specific genre, and just like not all movies are action movies, not all anime are targetted at teenage boys.
But the English voice acting IS almost always crap.
Darcrequiem @ Jul 24th 2006 11:40PM
It certainly looks interesting but they have to ditch the Baten Kaitos voice acting and cheesy lead character name if they wish for this to sell. Travis Touchdown? What Frederick Freethrow and Herbert Homerun were taken? Terrible name.
Psaakyrn @ Jul 25th 2006 12:30AM
The story too simplistic? Considering that the game is called Heroes, there seems to be more to the story that "simply being the best fighter".
I guess why this trailer didn't make it to E3 is because of the lack of ingame footage though. We've absolutely no idea how the game is played or how far into development it is.
GSI @ Jul 25th 2006 12:45AM
"Travis Touchdown? What Frederick Freethrow and Herbert Homerun were taken? Terrible name."
HAHAHAHAHA! That was CLASSIC!
You get an honorary star for that one. LOL
T-Bag @ Jul 25th 2006 3:09AM
@ GSI,
Yes, it's one of my MANY skills.
GSI @ Jul 25th 2006 4:45AM
Then you must fail all the time then...
Krazyman @ Jul 25th 2006 4:46AM
Sylvia christl is the name of the actress that played Emmanuelle in "emmanuelle".
assume....
just useless info
T-Bag @ Jul 25th 2006 5:26AM
@ GSI,
Using the word "time" in the sentence didn't give you any witty points my friend. In fact, it dishonored your family's name and put shame to your so called "grade-A crops". The rain won't help this year, no, not this year at all.
Jules @ Jul 25th 2006 5:48AM
*whistles* "i like that"!
shibby @ Jul 25th 2006 10:13AM
Man that was a bad english dub...
But yeah... it's a game, show the game or I just don't care. I'm tired of game trailers that don't show the fricking GAME. I'm not gonna be playing the tralier now am I? SO SHOW THE GAME. Idiots.
jear ed @ Jul 25th 2006 11:33PM
this was cool until they started talking
